ThermaCapture Radiant Heat Technology is a proprietary reflective coating that we apply to a range of surfaces. By reflecting radiant heat back to your body that is otherwise lost, this extremely lightweight coating turns that surface into a very efficient heat reflector, amplifying warmth without the excess weight or bulk of added, conventional insulating materials.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bulky, moderately warm, but bombproof The subject just about says it all. If you haven't educated yourself about the differences between various types of sleeping pads, you probably should. This model has some (but not all) of the drawbacks you'd typically expect from a CCF pad. It's bulky, to start with. Can't get around that. This will work for you if you're OK with strapping your pad to the exterior of your pack. Beyond just being big, unlike accordion-folding pads which are easy to fold up and deploy, this pad has to be rolled tight, and doing so is a bit of a hassle, so it's not as convenient to use as a sit pad. It's not as heavy as it looks, so don't let the bulk fool you. Mine clocked in at 647 grams. That's just under 23 oz, which is about the same as some of the mid-weight Neoair models in wide sizes (it's not really fair to compare this to standard width pads). Still, ultralight types who can handle less warmth and less real estate might opt for a Z-Lite Sol instead. Speaking of, this pad is wide. It comes in one size: huge. 77"x25". If you're one of those people who really enjoys a 25" pad, this is a huge comfort upgrade. It might even be a necessity if you're a cold sleeper AND a back sleeper that sprawls horizontally. If you don't need the extra length, just cut any excess off and seal the edge with tape, to save on weight. It's 0.75 inches thick, and it has a reflective layer (keep that on the bottom for best results). I would call this the warmest and most comfortable CCF pad out there. Keep in mind that it's still only going to be comfortable for those who like *very* firm support while sleeping. That means back sleepers who like very firm mattresses. Side sleepers or people who like pillowy mattresses may be miserable. If you're using a CCF pad, you'll need to check your camp sites properly. This will not absorb roots and rocks, so move any rocks you can and use litter to cushion the ground beneath you. Don't be afraid to test a site (throw down your ground sheet and lie down on your pad) if you're not sure. This is an avoidable problem in some parts of the country, but ymmv if you frequent areas basically covered in tree roots. And keep in mind that Therm-A-Rest rates this as having a R value of 3.5 only. So if you're a warm sleeper, this will handle light winter conditions. If you're a cold sleeper in an area with real winters, this is a three-season pad only. Even the best CCF pads won't come close to the warmth of the warmest inflatable pads. But this pad is bombproof. It might lose efficacy over time, but in the field, you have zero worries about this being punctured and becoming useless. It can stand up to bushwacking on the outside of your pack. If it does get a puncture somehow (more likely from your own gear than the ground with this pad), just use some duct tape (you are carrying a few feet, right?) to seal the hole on both sides, and you're good to go. As with almost all sleep gear, don't store this compressed when it's waiting for your next adventure at home. Give it a bit of extra room. I like this pad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Performer From car camping, crashing on someone's floor, to 8 year daughter sleeping on it during a 26 degree night (F) this pad performs great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value! This inexpensive pad has an amazing R-value of 3.5; offering a lot of warmth and comfort. Remember, it's a pad and not a mattress, but you do get a lot for the money with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect "width" for stomach sleepers! I purchased for the "25 inch width" and its "simplicity" when backpacking. It meets all of my needs. I also purchased the straps. The "solar" provides a bit more of insulation verses the Z-type cell foam type.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential The ground can be rather unforgiving and cold if you enjoy casual winter camping like I do. Ridge Rest Solar was an essential addition to my sleep system and fastens easily to the outside of my pack during the trail haul.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Warm but has issues It's definitely warm and lightweight, but it's very bulky. When tightly rolled up, its diameter is about 8.5 inches. If you want to strap it outside your backpack, you better have a set of LONG straps. Also, I was hiking through a well maintained trail, and some branches and bushes brushed off the pad - nothing too crazy, but some of its foam chipped is away already. Thermarest really needs to live up to its reputation, and spend some time and effort improving the durability of their products.. because this isn't the only Thermarest product with durability issues.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good buy if looking for ultra light weight Great warmth, just a little less padding than i would have liked. The large definitely is longer and covers your entire length( I am 6'2'').

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice but not exactly what I was expecting. I have always had one of these pads because they are so easy but I thought it would be nice to have one that fit my size and would be a little thicker/ comfortable. It delivers on all that but it's much heavier and bulky than I would imagine. It will become a truck or boat camping pad. Its fool proof but no longer a backpacking pad.

I like the large size, but can I trim the length without harming the integrity?

Asked by: Rodney
Altering the sleeping pad in any way is not recommended, since this could lead to the materials coming apart and would void all warranty on the item.
