The Therm-a-Rest ProLite Mattress is a sleeping mattress that won't weigh down your hiking pack. The Atmos™ foam pad comes in four sizes, ranging from 36 inches to a whopping 77 inches (in length). The fabric on the outside is a strong 50D mini hex rip polyester, built to take on the rigors of backpacking yet soft enough to the touch. The mattress inflates itself once you lay it out and open the air valve, creating a 2.4 R-value and a 1 inch thickness that keeps your body off the cold ground. Just add a few breaths of air to the pad for firmness before snuggling into your tent. When you wake in the morning, release the air, fold and roll 'er up and jam it right into the included stuff sack. Easy peasy, right into your pack!

FEATURES of the Therm-a-Rest ProLite Mattress

  • The lightest self-inflating mattress available
  • Diagonal-cut channels in the foam reduce bulk and retain heat better than straight-cut foam
  • Ultralight, diagonal-cut Atmos Foam and a tapered shape keep the ProLite mattress extremely pack friendly
  • Expanding foam core self-inflates; top off with just a few breaths for personalized firmness
  • Stuff sack included

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic that still has a place This is an evolution of an old design that was actually revolutionary in the 1970's when Thermarest first released self-inflating pads. Before that it was closed cell foam, and before that beds of leaves and/or animal skins. In terms of weight/pack size/comfort the new inflatable pads (e.g. NeoAir) are superior. Here are some reasons you might still want to consider a good old self-inflatable Prolite: 1) budget - about half the cost 2) self-inflatable - OK so most of the time this isn't a big deal but if you're completely roasted climbing at altitude you just want to collapse in your tent and the last thing you want to do is blow several big breaths into a NeoAir. The Prolites just need a little bit of air to top them off. 3) durability/reliability - this is the principal advantage in my opinion and why I own and continue to use a Prolite even though I also have an XLite and XTherm. The fabric is more durable than the NeoAirs which seem like pool toys by comparison, punctures are easier to patch successfully in the field if they do happen (flat surface vs baffles), and even if you can't repair it the open cell foam inside the Prolite will still provide some minimal insulation (unlike an inflatable mattress). While this 1in pad won't provide the cushion that a 2.5in NeoAir will, it's still way, WAY more comfy than a closed cell foam pad. It's a good middle ground of comfort and durability. For casual backpacking or base camping I like the light weight/packability and comfort of the NeoAirs. But for longer, more committing trips or climbing I tend to place more value on reliability. In my opinion carrying a closed cell foam mat + a torso length Prolite for comfort is an optimal system: pretty comfy, pretty warm, durable/reliable, still reasonably light. A bit of extra weight and bulk is an acceptable compromise in some situations. FYI you can shorten these and reseal them with a household iron like the NeoAirs (ie if you want a 25in wide pad but torso length, which Thermarest doesn't offer). It's just more of a pain because you have to painstakingly clean off the foam/glue from the edges before sealing. Obviously you could mess it up and end up with an expensive paperweight that doesn't hold air; neither Thermarest nor Moosejaw recommend modifying your pad this way. Video tutorials are available on YouTube for the bold.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dog friendly I actually purchased this for my aging puppers. She's about 60 lbs. and the 3/4 option is sized perfectly for her to bed down on. It keeps her insulated from the cold ground, provides good relief to her tired joints, and adds a negligible amount of weight to my backpack. MJ was the only outlet I could find that offered the 3/4 size at a reasonable price...woof!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I bought this after deciding to spend more time this year backpacking, and used it last week in West Virginia. It self inflated in no time, requiring only one additional breath for me to feel perfectly comfortable. It stayed inflated, didn't slide around, and helped me get a great nights rest. I was worried about rolling it up and fitting it back into its stuff sack, but it was easy and pain free.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great so far We've only had this for less than a month (so I can't say how durable it is long term), but we used it already on a recent camping trip. The main reason for the purchase was for backpacking trips- having something light and compact. But it also functions well for regular camping trips for the same reasons. We have another older thermarest that is thicker, bigger, and heavier, and yet the quality and comfort of the ProLite is even a little better. I accidentally bought this one instead of the ProLite Plus (which has comparable specs, but is .5 inches thicker), and we decided to keep this one because it was comfortable. My partner is 6'4" and he loves it. Not sure how it handles extreme cold, since we are not camping in cold weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just as expected I bought this just in time for a camping trip and was super happy that I did. It was comfortable, my sleeping bag fit perfectly over top of it. It was just what I ordered, and expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite bed I use this as my regular bed, and I absolutely love it. It's firm, but plenty enough padding so that you don't feel like you're sleeping on the floor - or the ground - or anywhere else that's a flat surface. I love being able to take my bed with me no matter where I go, and I love how durable, and warm it is over any other air mattress.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features. Gave this as a gift and my granddaughter loves it. She picked it out and knew what she wanted and when it arrived it was just great and she is enjoying using it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Therm-a-Rest Pro-Lite short mattress If you're looking for a good air mattress reasonably comfortable and lite this is the one for you. I personally find a self inflatable mattress has a much longer lifespan. Also It is easier to blow up and deflate.

Is it necessary to get a large Pro lite for a large person (ie ~ 6 feet tall 200 lbs), or will a smaller length serve as well?

Asked by: Dorsalis
Hi Dorsalis! Great question. I would definitely go with at least a medium, if not a large size ProLite mattress. The medium has a length of 72 inches, and the large has a length of 77 inches. Hope this helps!
