Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great backpack I got this for my daughter a month ago for the first day of school. It has so much room. She says it is comfortable to wear even when it is full.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great backpack for travel! I did my first trip with TNF Surge backpack and had a great experience. It is very convenient for traveling. It has many pockets with and without zippers. It has the TSA friendly compartment for the laptop. The only flaw I have noticed is that the water bottle pockets are too small and you have to be careful to not lose the bottle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plenty of room! Bought this backpack for my work laptop. Roomy yet not bulky. Love the colors! North Face does not disappoint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roomy! Good Quality! Great color! We bought this for my daughter to use for four years in high school. They do not have lockers so she mist carry everything with her all the time. Therefore roomy and sturdy are a must! It appears we acheived both of those with this backpack. The many pockets are handy and the color is great! Feels like we will get 4 years out of it!! Thank you!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Inaccurate pack description - NOT 31L! Not sure which model-year they're selling of this backpack, but I ordered this and the size dimensions listed on Moosejaw's site do not match the descriptions on the tag attached to the item. Sadly I will have to return this as I need the 31L size and tag on my bag says it is actually only 26L - just something to keep in mind when ordering. I'll be ordering the current version from the TNF website in the hopes of actually getting the 31L size pack. Otherwise the pack is perfectly fine, typical quality you get with North Face.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful color. Amazing quality. I have two of these packs for my kids (4th grade and 7th grade). They still look brand new after a year of use for school. I just bought this one for my 2nd grader because I trust the quality. She loves the color.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I bought this backpack for my daughter who loves to hike and travel. All the storage and organizing areas are perfect for her and she can fit a lot into it. The fact that it's made for a woman made it the right choice for her because it's so comfortable. Hopefully it will last just as long as her last North Face backpack - 15 years!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is embarrassment waiting to happen! I had recieved this backpack for school purposes, and i was so excited that i had a cool backpack. But when it came time for school some mishaps had occurred due to my bag. So one day i was walking throught the hallway and out of no where the top zipper of my bag comes undone and my whole bag goes collapsing onto the floor for all to see, and i have never been so embarresed. And all people did was laugh and makes jokes, so i suggest that you think before buying the backpack of embarrassment!!!

Do the side pockets fit a L size nalgene?

Asked by: liberated104
Hiya, thanks for the question! A typical 32 oz nalgene will squeeze into the side pocket. A thinner and taller bottle would fit better... but I'm not going to tell you what to do. Hope this helps!

I currently have the unisex recon and have had it since 9th grade.(soon to be college freshman) I am looking at the redesigned recon and the surge. Which one would you recommend considering the compartments/added weight. I don't really have a good posture

Asked by: Gizmo
Thanks for the question! Both packs are a great option and you honestly can't go wrong with either one of them. The Surge is just a tad bigger than the Recon, but surprisingly weighs less. I would say that the Recon is more popular with our college students. The Surge would be more for our traveling customers who need a TSA-friendly back. Both internal compartments are pretty similar - pen holder, cord-keepers, internal zippered pockets, etc. I personally like the Recon best because I don't need the three separate zippered compartments on the Surge. But it all comes down to your preference. In regards to your posture, try not to put the heaviest items in the very bottom of your pack. But them more towards the top. Also, make sure the pack is adjusted to sit higher up, and not slouching down rubbing on your lower back. I hope this helps a little!

what's the best backpack for a highschool student who carries a lot of things?

Asked by: Cyan
Hi Cyan, good question! Honestly, I think that either this one or The North Face Women's Recon Backpack would work really well. They both have a lot of room (31L), and really the only difference between the two is the pocket set up and design. I'll include a link to the Recon here for you, hope this helps! https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_The-North-Face-Women-s-Recon-Backpack_10277332_10208_10000001_-1_

I am interested in the Surge, but the "men's" version is a little bigger than I need. I am a 5'7" male and the women's version looks like a better size for me. Is there some reason why the woman's version wouldn't work for me?

Asked by: Paul B
Hey Paul! There is absolutely no reason the woman's version will not work for you. In the larger trekking backpacks they do do way more to differentiate between men's and women's "curve of hip belts and harnesses) but even then, men have no problem wearing those packs and vice versa for women. You could totally rock the Surge in the women's!

If it starts to pour down raining while I'm walking around outside with this bag on, will anything on the inside of the bag get damp/wet?

Asked by: Allie
Hiya Allie, thanks for your question! This pack is water resistant. It could handle light rain but in the case of a downpour, the contents will get wet. If you want a truly waterproof pack, check out the The North Face Homestead Waterproof Pack. You might want to consider a hiking pack like the Osprey Women's Skimmer 22 Pack. It's technically not waterproof but it includes a rain cover. Here are some links for ya: The North Face Homestead Waterproof Pack http://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_The-North-Face-Homestead-Waterproof-Pack_10332188_10208_10000001_-1_ Osprey Women's Skimmer 22 Pack http://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Women-s-Skimmer-22-Pack_10303549_10208_10000001_-1_ Hope this helps!

The North Face Women's Packs

SIZE One Size X-Small / Small Medium / Large
Torso Size (Adjustable) N/A" 13 - 18" 15 - 20"
Torso Size (Fixed) 15 - 18" 14 - 17" 16 - 19"
Hipbelt Size 24 - 35" 24 - 30" 30 - 36"

HOW to MEASURE TORSO SIZE
1. Put your chin to your chest and feel for the big bone protruding on your neck at the top of your spine. That's the C7 vertebra.

2. Feel your hip bone, the top part of this is your iliac crest. Find the spot on your back that is level with the top of this crest.

3. Have someone measure the distance between these two points, following the contours of your spine.

HOW to MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE
1. Measure around your body where the hipbelt will rest while you hike. This should be just above your iliac crest.

NOTES
The size info above is for The North Face technical and backpacking packs. Day packs and work / school packs are offered in One Size, and feature adjustable straps to fit an array of sizes.

Women's packs feature a women's-specific design for a better fit and more comfortable carry on smaller female torsos.
