Polartec Power Grid

Polartec Power Grid
Polartec Power Grid is a fleece fabric with a grid pattern. The grid design allows the fabric to wick moisture away from the skin, dry quickly, and increase breathability. It also allows the apparel piece to be lightweight and compress down for packing.

DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best tech fleece in the game Wear this on all my alpine quests and it really does everything. Accessibility with the pockets right there and durability all in one. Easy to layer over baselayers and if it gets too hot easy packability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best technical fleece, and from TNF?! Wow. The fit, zippers, and the mapped fleeces with different brick sizes to optimize insulation and breathability and amazing hardface surface... I think this is probably the best-performing fleece in my battalion of fleeces, kind of like an R1 but with some fantastic design distinctions... So i saw this fleece in person first, and i couldn't believe it was from North Face, but this is a serious, astonishingly well designed fleece. There are two types of fleece at work here - a large-brick 2017 R1-type, which magically seamlessly transitions into a 1/2-brick grid fleece (like the other but with half of each brick "shaved" to about 1/4 the loft of the rest of the fleece) on the lower front & upper back, and distal forearms. The 1/2-shaved-brick fleece is actually stitched (but with nice 4-row flatlock 16-18 stitches-per-inch) into the center-panel of the 3-panel hood, with the alignment of the 1/2-bricks changed to a longitudinal orientation. It is stretchy - especially the narrow-brick grid fleece, which has twice the elastane (15%!), making the whole jacket very stretchy, especially across the shoulders, and, well, for the belly, in case you like porter as much as i do... The hard face fleece deserves mention as it feels similar to the Power-Stretch Polartec Hardface fleece, but instead of a grid-pattern, it has a pattern like tread-plate, which is a nice touch... It has a nice deep #3 Vislon center-zip with a clutch zipper (3VSt) with a full- (or 3/4, since it's not a full zip, obviously) length wind flap that has an extra layer of the same nylon/elastane as the breast pocket, which has a small clutchless vislon w/ garage. Both zippers have fantastic proprietary pulls made of two durometers of plastic molded around a cord, that also look really cool. The single pocket is pretty big. The lack of hand-warmer pockets is lamentable, but again totally consistent with the modern, minimal, functional design motif. The fit deserves mention. It's definitely a technical fleece, no doubt, & the hood works perfectly underneath all of my shells, but it's not a scuba hood like the R1 or Fortrez. The neck is tall but not tight, and the hood looks nice, not like you're going diving, but also not the pointy hood of yesteryear. It tapers in a flattering v-shaped profile and fits close, at least the large fits close but not tight around my 33" waist, So everything just fits without need for any adjustments, or even any elastic that leaves you looking like a ninja or Kenny, depending on your color choice. I wanted to take the time to do this review, since i think it is really a next-level fleece midlayer that can be pressed into service as an urban corner-season stand-alone "sweater". I get a lot of cheery greetings (read: people laughing at me) walking down the street in the Canary Yellow...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best in a layering system The Polartec and Fuseform technologies make a solid combination and this hoody feels soft and warm on the inside, yet tough and durable on the outside. However, it really has minimal value without an accompanying outer layer/windshirt--despite TNF advertising it as "wind resistant," wind can rip right through it and sap away all your warmth. It also lacks the hand warming pockets present in the other L2 jacket (full zip), which is a bit of a bummer. Nevertheless it pairs quite nicely with the L3 Ventrix, and those two pieces alone were enough to keep me comfortable 90% of the time on my recent trip to Kilimanjaro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I have used this on 2 backpacking trips in cold weather and this has been my favorite piece of gear. Its warm, light and I love the yellow. This will go on any trip below 50 degrees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great inner layer I use this as a base layer for my Summit L3 Ventrix Hoodie while snowboarding. Does the job great! It's super breathable and is checkered with passthrough material all over. I like that that there's a hood that I can put on under my helmet to keep me extra warm. Fits great, and looks super stylish too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Northface has really stepped up their game Wow. This is such an awesome pullover. I havent used it for wintersports yet but I have used it as my goto job-site shirt because it's super durable. The DWR is awesome too. I had to run through the rain and realized that I was not wet at all (I also wore DWR type pants). Length is good and fit is definitely athletic. Warmth is average, maybe a little worse because it does very little to block wind but I don't get hot. The fit is not "relaxed" nor "skin tight". This is something you would wear as a mid or base layer and you definitely cannot fit a puffer or another mid layer underneath. I've used it mostly as my outer layer with a t-shirt underneath. But I would say the fit is "as described" because it may feel a little snug if you didn't consider the intended fit. Only issue is the price. Wow...I wouldn't even consider it without the enormous black friday discounts. But I sure do see where the dollars went on this thing. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable and warm mid-layer Very comfortable over a light base layer and under a light down jacket or Gore Tex layer. Will be used heavily this winter as a mid layer. Already tried in a couple weekends around 15 to 20 degrees with wind while hiking and it performed better than expected, I stayed warm and dry. I'd buy another if I ever wear this one out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely love this hoodie Great midlayer and can even use it in Florida winters as a pull-over. Can't wait to use it on my next hike.
