Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Decent Day Pack I took this pack out for its "maiden voyage" today (a 4 mile hike in mountainous terrain), and here are my impressions. First, this is a relatively small volume pack, suitable for day hikes. (Some reviewers, here and elsewhere have suggested using this pack for an overnight or multi-day trip. I can't imagine using it for this purpose, except perhaps on a short hut-to-hut trip. It is almost certainly too small if a tent, sleeping bag, stove and food for more than one day are required.) I found the pack to be well made, with good features. and comfortable. I particularly like the side water bottle pouches (because I prefer using water bottles over hydration bladders), the top lid ("brain") which includes exterior and interior zippered compartments, and the integrated rain cover. Very few day packs have the latter two features. There are two ice axe loops. Relatively few of use ice axes, but these should work nicely for securing trekking poles, which most of use do use. The padded hip belt worked nicely, landing right on my hips, but I am relatively short (5'5"). I would guess that this pack might not work so well for a taller person with a longer torso. Now some quibbles. First, I would prefer to see a patch of Cordura or other scuff and water resistant fabric on the very bottom of the pack, to protect it when placed on sharp rocks, damp ground or the like. (But you rarely see such a feature on a small volume day pack.) Next, you really can lash a pair of snow shoes to the front of the pack, as shown in one of the product description photos. (I just tried it.) But the upper compression strap is barely long enough for this purpose. Making these front compression straps just a wee bit longer would be an improvement, particularly for those with snow shoes. I would love to see the addition of a D ring on the shoulder straps, for fastening a GPS, PLB or the like.
