Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good All-arounder After researching and toiling over a replacement for my worn out midweight down jacket I'm glad I selected the Nebula.  The medium fit is perfect (5'10", 167 lbs., 34" sleeve length) with enough room for layering and active movements like stretching out and bending over.  The Nebula is a quality construction, "athletic" fit, and the selection of materials inside and out.  The jacket is comfortably warm with just a light base layer while downhill skiing in 20* F weather, is very water resistant (shedding snow and moisture with ease), and perfefct weight to throw on at the top of a long skin up the ridge.  With a high quality shell over the top of the Nebula, I'd be toasty under real nasty conditions.   Pros:  Fit and construction materials           Price           Utility - multifunctional           Helmet compatible hood Cons: Stuffability - stuff sack size larger than down fill

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tested to -24F: A Versatile Winter All-Rounder I lost my Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody a while back and had been looking for a replacement for months. Although I reside in Minnesota, my soul lives out in the Rockies, which leaves me with something of an odd gear situation: I needed a layer that was lightweight enough for the mountains, but also warm&tough enough to survive the -35F days back home (plus the daily abuse of everyday wear). I've always been a die-hard fan of down, but was recently swayed over to the Cirrus synthetic of the RAB Nebula and have not been disappointed. I've always been a big fan of Patagonia and Arc'teryx, but my most hardcore friends have always been RAB devotees, and I took a gamble on this jacket - indeed the quality seems to be on par with any of the other big players, but the price was significantly less than any other equivalent synthetic I could find. I initially was wondering about the Cirrus insulation, since the gold standard has always been Primaloft Gold, and it's hard to compare warmth on a new type of insulation. I already own a 60g/m piece and was in the market for something between 120g/m-150g/m. I emailed RAB about this and they got back to me stating that the Cirrus insulation is approx. equivalent to 650-fill down (albeit waterproof). This is the full email from the RAB rep, since others might find this useful: "The Nebula or Nimbus would make for excellent choices. The Nebula is quite a bit warmer than Patagonia's Down Hoody, Ultralight Jacket and our Xenon X. The Pertex Endurance outer will give you extra weather protection and it adds some warmth as well. The only downside to the Nebula is that it is not as packable as a down piece with similar dimensions. The Nimbus is still warmer than our Xenon X and I would assume the aforementioned Patagonia jackets. But it is getting closer in warmth to those pieces. It is definitely more packable than the Nebula. In large part due to the Pertex Quantum that is used as the outer fabric." Sweet, so exactly what I was looking for. A warmer and more versatile synthetic version of my beloved Patagonia Down Hoody. My usual gear setup looks like this: On the really cold days (or really cold nights out camping) I'm usually equipped with a wool base layer, an R1, a 60g/m jacket (Patagonia Nano-Air), and a Gore-Tex hard shell. The down sweater was too tight to comfortably fit into this system unless I left the Nano-Air out (which dramatically reduced how warm I could make it), and so this time around I decided to search for a more generously-cut belay jacket. I absolutely loved the cut and styling of the Patagonia Down Hoody (my girlfriend always raved about how much she liked me in it) - it was the perfect winter pub crawler or campfire/cooking layer and always had that nice toasty "oven" feeling when I put it on, however I always left it back at basecamp while out climbing since I didn't really fit into my layering system, plus I was always worried about it getting wet and then being left stuck in the backcountry without my warmest layer. Although I haven't yet had a chance to put my Nebula through the wringer, the Pertex shell seems bombproof so far, and the compressibility and warmth indeed feel equivalent to the best synthetic insulation currently available. It's definitely warm: likely equivalent to 120g/m-150g/m, but breathes well and has never felt stuffy. The cut is definitely on par with other belay jackets - I'm 6'2 and 165lbs and usually wear a Medium, and the Medium Nebula definitely fits well, but my girlfriend has been lamenting that it doesn't show off my physique in the same way that the down hoody did. I'll report back as I get more chances to put this jacket through the wringer and report what I find.
