Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Carabiner! I got this for doing technical canyons and it saves so much time! No more fiddling with a locked gate to get the rope in place. It definitely best fits ropes under 10mm, but I had an 11mm in it and it did the job just fine. Make sure you don't do double-line rappels in this though, otherwise you just defeated the purpose of this carabiner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for light belayers! Expesnive, though. A few of the folks I climb with have had this biner for awhile for use with their GriGris, and as a lighter climber, I've really enjoyed using it. I always end up belaying people who weigh more than me, (sometimes MUCH more), so the Freino makes for a much smoother and more controlled belaying experience when there's a significant imbalance in climber and belayer weight. The friction spur adds friction and keeps the rope nicely in place, and the biner gate autolocks, making it very safe. I saw that these are advertised to be used instead of a prusik for rappelling as well. I haven't tried it yet for that, just for belaying with a GriGri. The only reason I give this a four star instead of a five is that the price is really high for something that isn't necessary. (Prusiks are easy and cheap, and good belaying technique can make up for unequal weight.) However, it is very convenient, and once it went on sale, I finally gave in an got one, and I have been enjoying it since!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good gear option As a beginner this is very helpful while belaying. It could use a few more color options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps top set ups neat Bought this in advance of an SPI course. It works very well, only took a little getting used to as the grigri doesn't slide down very far so opening it up is tricky. When setting up the grigri to lower from top belay situations while others were messing with where to put the redirect carabiner I just hooked this in an was ready to go.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from You probably don't need this Unless you are a SPI trying to impress another SPI the re-direct hook is only going to succeed in twisting up your rope. If you're a small person lowering a large person then get belay gloves and some better belay technique, it'll serve you better than this pricey device. This locker is a little small for someone with large hands as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Helpful for heavy (heavier) climbers This is fantastic to belay with if my climber is 170+ lbs (with a gri-gri). The extra bend gives a lot more control. The only downside is weight; I wouldn't bring this with me if weight was at all a consideration.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spendy, but useful when you're belaying someone heavier than you I got my Freino after struggling to lower my heavier boyfriend with a gri-gri after climbing. I had tried plenty of things to increase friction to a point where he could have a smooth ride back down with varying degrees of success but the Freino solved the problem perfectly. The extra bend in the rope created when using the Freino is just what we needed. He feels more comfortable, I don't get burned hands, things are faster, and it looks awesome. Its solid and secure and I trust it completely. Great combo with the gri-gri.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must for ropes skinnier 9.8. This device creates an extra friction point for lowering folks on skinny ropes. I can't see using a 9.5 without either a pair of good gloves or a Freino. Plus, it's mildly entertaining to watch other climbers try and use it for the first time.
