Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very warm and comfortable We pretty much buy Patagonia for everything. Its a brand we trust, the fit is always spot on for my age and size, and the quality is high. Patagonia corporate responsibility plays into our decision as well. These bottoms fit a bit looser than the medium weight but still worked great. Worn skiing in Stowe, VT during a "feels like" -10 day with just ski pants on top and they worked fine and kept me warm. On a feels like -20 day I stacked these pants with medium weight pants and was kept warm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far, so good. I haven't had a chance to test these out in fridged weather, but they do well in low 30's. The versatility you've probably read about is true - they're comfy both indoors & out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warmest long-johns available This is my second pair. First ones lasted 3 seasons and is still okay, besides a couple of runs (like panty hose) Best long underwear I’ve owned, warmer than smart wool. Expensive, but worth it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Winter Camping I bought these primarily to help keep me warm during winter camping (I prefer tights for winter day hiking, but looser thermals for sleeping), and so far after one trip (high 20s at night) they worked perfectly as part of my clothing & sleeping bag system. Really happy with this product, especially great when on sale.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfy! Happy as can be with these thermals. First ones I've ever been able to wear all day without fatigue and irritation. Quality is excellent and comfort is the best I've seen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fit as expected I purchased these for an up coming elk hunt in Montana. I got these because of my brother who has lived in Montana for the last 20 years. He said this is the only ones that work. He has had his for 15 years.

What are the washing instructions for the thermal weight base layer pants

Asked by: barb
HI there, thanks for your question! The manufacturer recommends washing it in cold water on a gentle cycle and drying it on the lowest heat setting. Hope this helps!

Are these both lighter and warmer than Capilene Midweight bottoms? Thermalweight is listed as "warmest" and more expensive ($89 vs $59) but Midweight is listed as heavier (6.8 oz vs 4.7 oz) and thicker fabric (5.2 os vs 3.8 oz).

Asked by: PapaBear
Hey Papabear! I am not an engineer so I cannot adequately answer with the science behind Patagonia's claims. It has something to do with the pattern (open faced vs brushed grid) that helps the heat retention. Some jazz about air entrapment in the open faced grid of the thermal weights. Hope that helps - the weights are indeed *lighter* for the warmer thermal, but the engineering behind that drives up the price. Just like an ultra light 1 person tent is way more expensive than those 8 person massive anvils you can buy at a regular box store.
