DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from can’t wait to use in a thailand I am about to go live in Thailand for a year and bought this backpack for that purpose. I am so excited to use it. I love the 2 ways it unzips and that I can use it as a carry on

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding crag pack I’ve used the Cragsmith 45 on two trips so far, both Trad and Sport Climbing. The pack is durable and has all the features I need. Capacity for a full trad rack, rope, helmet, extra cloths and snacks. The back access zipper opens the entire main compartment for access to all your gear. On one trip I forgot my rope bag so I belayed right out of the pack with no problems. I especially like the stretchy side pockets to store water bottles, flip flops and dirty climbing shoes. The shoulder straps and waist straps are adequate, well padded and adjustable. One of the best climbing packs on the market for sure

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a review, but sizing info Couldn't find sizing info on the site or on the Patagonia site, so I hit them up about it: this is what they told me! "The difference between the two is only in the length of the torso. The size S/M is recommended for torso length 16" - 19" (waist 28" - 36"), and the size L/XL is recommended for torso length 19" - 22" (waist size 32" - 42")."

Im thinking about purchasing this pack as a "carry on" bag.  Know it has a 45L capacity, however, how are the dimensions compared to traditional carry on luggage?

Asked by: Seamus 88
Hey there Seamus 88! Great question. The S/M Cragsmith 45L is within most airline carry-on regulations at 23.5 x 10.6 x 7.5 in. The L/XL is a little large for a carry-on, measuring 25.5 x 10.6 x 7.5 in. It really just depends which airline you are flying with. Hope this helps!

1) I notice the pack straps are directly on the opening panel, so the weight of the pack is going to VERY heavily be on the zipper. Is the zipper metal? Anything set up to control this? 2) Is there an external option to carry the rope if need be?

Asked by: Ryan
Hey Ryan - While we are not Patagonia so we can't personally attest to their rigorous research and development, but we can attest that all of the goods we have received from them are built to not just meet the demands of the product, but to exceed them. . They've provided many clinics for us and they kind of know what they are doing. I understand your concern of having weight being placed on the zipper. I am here manhandling the Cragsmith as I type this and it has reinforced walls / internal structure that help offset the weight distribution. The zipper is your standard coated zipper with reinforced seams. As for external carrying options, I do not see of any way without massive DIY additions to the pack. Again, the pack does not squash flat, so anything you would add to the outside of the pack - especially to the back of the pack - would make the weight way off base and really quite awkward to carry. I would not suggest it.
