Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent rain jacket This is a great rain jacket. Love the color and feel. Breathes really well. I have two minor gripes. First, no hand pockets. This is a minor issue. Second, it runs a little small and it's a little tight on my hips even though it fits my arms chest and stomach great. Great jacket, but maybe size up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good choice I am happy with this jacket. Be sure to get a size that fits your chest well so if between medium and large, go for the large to allow for layering if you want to be out in cold weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultra Light Hard Shell The lightweight material used to make the jacket surprised me! The weight of the jack is extremely minimal which is great for high output activities like ski touring, x-country skiing and mountaineering. Initially I was concerned that the jacket might rip if it gets caught on a tree branch, however I've owned a few articles of clothing from OR that were also super light and appeared easily ripped but survived many excursions. So this shell won't take up much room in your pack and can provide that shield you need for the wind/snow/rain you encounter on outdoor adventures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome. Great piece. Can keep on on the way up and keeps rain off but breathes, keep on the way down and keeps wind off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect addition to the quiver. Very happy with this purchase. Works great with layers after a hard alpine ski walk when you are staring down a chilly decent.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not windproof, dangerous in the cold This is a great design that is let down by the fabric. Being advertised as an alpine climbing jacket, this thing should be undoubtedly windproof. An alpine shell is something you put on when its nuking and you need to keep moving. I had this out in -10 degrees with sustained 40mph winds with gusts to 70-90. The 40mph wind whipped right through this jacket and oh god those gusts felt like a firehouse of ice water. My legs, in my ems waterproof breathable pants, were perfectly fine, no problem. Likewise my wife's rab spark blocked the wind flawlessly. My hands in my OR mitts were toasty as well (until my body started shutting blood from my hands to my frozen core....)2 Similarly, we were 1000 feet up a gully on a somewhat milder day and again this thing just did NOT block the wind. Very disappointed. I can not, in good conscience, recommend ascentshell to anyone going into the alpine. In situations where the wind chill could make a difference between hypothermia and completing the climb, this material can get you killed. On the other hand, it's probably a sick warm weather backpacking shell because it sure does breath!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Impressed! My first 2 days back-to-back in this jacket were a good test: Nordic skiing in the rain, and skinning/touring on a dry, breezy day with a snow squall and warmer temperatures (upper 30s). I was very impressed. If there were half stars I would go with 4.5. I wasn't sure what to expect from the Ascentshell, but it really impressed with its waterproofness during real rain, but I didn't have to unzip anything and get exposed to the precipitation while Nordic skiing to vent, which is good because it doesn't have any (other than one pocket). The next day Was a weird day weatherwise: a little cool and breezy to just wear my baselayer, but too warm for much insulation. It got pretty breezy toward the ridgetop and I could notice it was not quite windproof.; it was a little cooler than other hard shells. I felt well-protected during a snow squall at lunch. I was looking for something a little more substantial than my Helium II, but keep the weight and bulk down. It filled the bill admirably! My design quibble is the one small interior pocket - no skins in here! - and the fact it was a little cool. But that also wasn't entirely unexpected from my research, so it was a known tradeoff.
