The Outdoor Research Men's Helium HD Jacket is a lightweight rain shell for backpackers and climbers that require more features in wet weather. The Helium HD uses Pertex Shield+, a 2.5 layer, 100% nylon, 30D ripstop fabric that cuts down the weight while remaining 100% waterproof. Whether you’re blocking a hard rain or whipping wind, the jacket stands up to it with water-resistant zippers and a fully adjustable Halo Hood. The Helium II is stripped down, where the Helium HD adds pit zips, zippered hand pockets, and Velcro cuffs. The large still only weighs in at just slightly over nine ounces and still packs down super small, saving weight and space in your pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid lightweight waterproof jacket I'm a SAR guy. I use this as a shell I carry literally all the time in my callout pack. It's a sturdy but lightweight (note: lightweight, not ultralight!) shell that has a great balance of features vs weight. I have an older Helium Hybrid as a backpacking shell as well. I opted for the HD for sturdiness when searching off-trail. As any waterproof-"breathable" shell, the "breathable" part is in quotes. The fabric itself doesn't breathe much - but the Helium HD's ample zips make it possible to have acceptable breathability. I'd wear it in mild rainy weather (-5C to 20C). Anything over that and the sweat that accumulates inside renders the rainproofing kinda useless. Only real complait is that the color on the picture looked like a very bright red, which is what I was looking for - turns out it's not that bright.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic rain gear! Wore this Jacket for a number or rainy days in the Rockies last week, kept me very dry ...even when I was exploring a waterfall! It has all the features I could want in a rain jacket (pit zips, velcro cuffs, hood cords, etc.) but so much lighter than anything I've had before. It's packability also made it easy to stash in the top lid of my pack so it was handy for layering throughout the day. I'm a big guy, so it wasn't as roomy as other jackets, but it layered well for me (over a mid weight fleece and down jacket), and worked very nicely when wearing my pack all day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight and waterproof as promised I have used this jacket around the city and in one downpour while backpacking. It is so light and thin that without anything under it, it feels like I might be wet since it sits so close to the skin. It has however kept me completely dry on every occasion. I haven't used it extensively enough to comment on its breath ability, but I am hoping that with the put zips it will dump heat fast enough to double as a wind jacket in high elevation conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish it was available in Women's sizes too! This jacket is not available in Women's sizes for some reason? I am sure it is true to size for men but the SMALL is closer to a women's medium. Athletic women also come in size S and XS! The sleeve length is too long for the average woman. I like my rain jackets to be roomie so i did not mind the extra girth in the chest area and i really liked the extra length in the back to cover my water does not drip down my pants while wearing a pack. I would suggest making this jacket in a unisex S and XS please!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfectly packable Perfectly lightweight and packable. Love the pit zips. Came out a little larger than I expected. I expected to have some room since it's a rain jacket that needs to go over stuff, but even still, seemed a hair large. I'm 5'9" and 175 lbs, and it felt a bit large in every dimension.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lightweight hard shell. This shells performance was exactly what I needed. I had been looking for a lightweight shell with pit zips and this did all I asked of it on June 2018 RMNP trip. Construction: No complaining about something that handles temps from 30-80 degrees and winds of 30mph. Built in design features allowed me to adjust internal temps to environmental conditions. Durability: No problems or complaints so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great feature filled OR jacket This product has all the features one would want for a lightweight rain jacket. Seems durable but like anything only time will tell. I recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why isn't this product offered in a unisex SMALL!! This wonderful jacket this is NOT available for women, thusly i had to order a Mens SMALL in order to get all the features that i need in a rain jacket. It would be great if this jacket was available in a unisex XS or S. Rainjackets do not need to fit fact a little on the big side is a good thing since it usually needs to fit over other layers. I normally wear a women's size 6 or size SMALL...i am sure the jacket fits true to size for men, which means sleeves that are way too long for me! However, the extra length and girth is a bonus for rainwear.

How would you expect this jacket to breathe compared to a Goretex shell?

Asked by: Matchewy
Hey there, This is a very breathable jacket that would work in a variety of conditions and has excellent temperature and moisture managements. Because the breathability of any waterproofing treatment like Gore-Tex is partly dependent on the material the jacket itself is constructed from I can't give a general rating in comparison, but the waterproofing treatment on this jacket works just as well as your standard Gore-Tex shell.
