Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm and Light I bought this jacket about a month ago and so far have been really happy with it. It has been around 10-40 degrees recently and I have worn this jacket exclusively. I have worn it both around town and doing outdoor activities. On warner days a t-shirt underneath has kept me warm and on the colder days a hoodie or a sweater underneath has done the trick. I took a decent fall while skiing and had no issues with the material ripping or tearing. It is good at repelling water and has stretch to it to give a good range of motion. It is light and packs down fairly small for how warm it is. The only negatives I could find about it: #1 There is no media port for headphones, which isn't a huge deal since it has a big inside pocket that can hold your ipod, phone, whatever. #2 It fits fairly snug. I have not had a problem getting layers underneath but it fits tight around the chest where the inside pocket's elastic pulls. If you are a borderline size, you can probably size up. Both of these cons are not enough for me to even knock the rating down and it has performed in everything I have thrown at it. Oh, also OR lifetime warranty is pretty awesome, not that I plan to have to use it. I am 5'8", 180 lbs with an athletic build and I got a Medium.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great jacket Wore this hiking around glaciers. Jacket held up well against the weird weather. Kept the wind and water at bay. Bought a large to fit over layers. 5'11 180 pounds and fits perfectly for the purpose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this jacket I got this jacket about a week ago and I've worn it every day since. It's warm but not bulky and the polartech alpha insulation is very comfortable. It's comfy like a fleece but much more versatile, wind and weather resistant. I have an OR ascent shell already and am fond of it, so I was excited to see it being used on the most weather exposed parts of this jacket. OR's hoods are things of beauty and I was able to cinch this thing down pretty closely in windy weather and it stayed on, despite it being fairly roomy, if you needed to wear a helmet. The sizing is right for me and allows me to get a few layers on underneath. I first bought an ascendant jacket in my usual OR size (Large) and it was too tight. I returned it for an uberlayer XL since it was one inch less in the chest than an ascendant (XL), and it was too big. I then returned it for this piece in large and it fits me perfectly. I find this jacket to be more versatile given it still has the polartech alpha insulation but more weather resistance. The truly frigid winter temps of Pennsylvania were gone before I got this jacket but I can already see myself wearing it more often than any of my other winter jackets. I"m happy with this piece. Thanks OR

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great jacket The size fit perfectly and the jacket is very light but very warm. Excellent windproof and waterproof material. Nothing wrong to say with this jacket even with the cold winter we got here in Québec, Canada

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile I bought a black Alpenice a few weeks ago and have used it quite a bit as a before and after Nordic skiing warmup jacket. In general I am very pleased with it except that when it was packaged, a crease was pressed into the hoop visor. I figured it would ease out with use but it hasn't. I have tried to work it out but I fear the crease is permenently set. The crease makes the hood almost unusable because it collapses over one eye. I regret that I didn't return it for exchange. I usually wear a Medium but after reading several reviews I decided to order a Large and I'm glad I did. It is a bit too roomy but a Medium would have been uncomfortably small in the chest.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting addition to the quiver... A superbly built jacket, as expected from OR, with small details like the waist cinch toggle being behind the hip rather than at the hip where a harness or pack belt will dig into you. As usual, sizing up for an outer layer like this is helpful (XL in my case). The unknown is how well the waterproof upper pieces will breathe. I'm expecting this to be a 'last resort' jacket in cold and windy conditions, in which case it should work well - but more field testing needed. Nothing like new gear to provide excuses to get outside more...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from More of a under layer I bought this as my main winter jacket for skiing, and ski touring. It fits small, and feels light duty.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Average Overall,I thought it to be way too much money for a basic active light winter jacket/later. The hood is huge as well, but does have a cinch cord.
