Osprey Airspeed

Osprey Airspeed
Using peripheral suspension design this lightweight, three dimensional suspension eliminates foam and backpanel materials and replaces it with lightweight suspended mesh. Three dimensionally shaped to allow maximum airflow and optimal tension and load carry sets Osprey apart from other tensioned mesh backpacks.

Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A Re-design Letdown The previous version of this backpack was the best bike commuting pack I have ever owned. I put more than 6,000 miles on it before it broke. Osprey offered me this newer version as a warranty replacement, which sounded wonderful-- a brand-new version of my favorite pack! Unfortunately, this pack is a disappointing downgrade. The worst is the redesign of the mesh back-- the new mesh is so soft and flimsy that as soon as I'm on the bike, it squishes flat and puts my back into direct contact with the bag. The old version would keep the pack off my back, letting air in between. Worse, the new pack has a flat pad under the mesh. There are no bumps or ridges that would allow a little ventilation when the mesh is compressed. This is supposed to be the key feature of this pack, and it just plain doesn't work. The old version was wonderful, but you'd be better off skipping the mesh for a simpler pack. The waist belt has been reduced from a two-inch strap that could support some weight to a one-inch strap that is uncomfortable if tightened enough to support much of the load. There are two large pockets in the front, but for some reason, the pockets are connected by large "vents" inside the pack. If you put a spare tire in one and an extra shirt in the other, your extra shirt will smell like a tire even though it's in a separate pocket. There's no retention for extra strap length. If you do buy this pack, make sure you grab a bunch of little elastic loops-- otherwise, the straps will whip you nonstop on your ride. The waist belt and shoulder straps have elastic that lets the pack bounce unless you tighten them down uncomfortably, but for some reason the sternum strap has none-- so you have to leave it loose to breathe. One of the useful side zip pockets is now a bottle pocket you can't close. It's a bike bag. Bottles will be on the bike. It's not all bad. The pack will stand up on its own for loading, which is great. I just wish the rest was great, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this bag! I bought the bag about a month ago and loved it right away. I bike to school every day, so I wanted a backpack that would be sturdy and visible and this is what you get with this bag. I love all the different pockets and the fact that the inside of the pockets is bright green. It makes it very easy to see what it's there. I don't use the front ones to carry shoes, but these two pockets are easily accessible and I put my umbrella and other things in them. The laptop pocket protects my 15' laptop very well; it's definitely snugged in there. The backpack fits well on my frame (I got the S/M size since I'm 5'4). I already tried the rain protector (highly needed in rainy Florida). It covers the whole bag very well , is very water resistant, and is highly visible. The only downside is the waist belt. I wished it was a real, thick waist belt, like the one you see on hiking backpack. The tiny waist belt helps to keep the bag on your back when biking, but with all that I put in there, the bag is something quite heavy and I wish I could redistribute some of the weight on my hips. I found the bag to be a little pricey but I got it while Moosejaw was running a whole store discount, so that definitely sweetened the deal. Overall, I highly recommend this bag.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Awesome until you bend over The Radial 34 swallowed all of my stuff just fine - clothes for work including jeans and sneakers, a change of cycling clothing for the trip home, my 13" Macbook Pro and charger, and a rain cape. I especially liked the separate shoe compartment, although fitting a pair of size 10.5 Asics sneakers was a little tricky. But the pack is poorly designed for bike commuting in anything but the most upright or straight-backed riding positions. As soon as I start to bend over the handlebars my spine starts digging into the rear of the pack. This is because (1) the rear of the pack is where the laptop compartment is positioned, (2) there is little padding on the rear of the pack, and (3) the rear of the pack is not curved. This means that the AirSpeed mesh stretches very little before it bottoms out against the rear of the pack. On my Manta 36 (and, I suspect, other AirSpeed-equipped hydration packs) the rear of the pack is curved, allowing the mesh to stretch to the point of actually providing support before bottoming out. This curved back, however, makes for a poor laptop compartment. Nonetheless, going forward I am going to use the Manta. I can pack my clothes and shoes in the main compartment so that the soles of the shoes face away from my back, and then shove my MBP (in a thick sleeve) into the stuff-it pocket. That way the MBP effectively rests against the soles of the shoes and the clothing in the main compartment. So...swing and a miss on the Radial 34. I wanted to like it, but it just doesn't work for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome pack. Main compartment needs work OK so this bag is awesome! Has a lot of pockets to put all kind of stuff, a place to put my helmet and it is also water proof. That said the main compartment can be bigger. I Constantly carry around 5 notebooks that are each 100 pages and sadly they end being squished together, making it really hard taking one of my notes book out quickly. I gave this 4 stars because the other features really make this bag really convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for commute! I love my new Osprey pack for daily commuting. The pack is extremely functional. I can take my close for the gym and pick up groceries on the way home.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extremely uncomfortable and a step down from old pack. The pack is extremely uncomfortable. The hard frame digs into your hips and other part of your body. I understand the concept of a hardframe, but there is very little padding where the frame actually touches your body making wearing the pack for any extended period or with any load an awful experience. (for context I am 145lbs and 5'9"). I am very disappointed in the pack and would NOT recommend it to anyone. I previously had a Momentum 34 which was amazing, comfortable and had more features. Unfortunately the zipper of that pack broke and they could not fix it so they sent me this as a replacement. Truly awful.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I own multiple Osprey bags that I love, this is not one First off, I love Opsrey packs. I have over 5 different types of Osprey bags in my house, and I now exclusively buy their products when I'm looking for bags. I received this bag as a warranty replacement for my Momentum 34, which was quite possibly the best commuter bag ever made. There are a lot of great things about this bag. The multitude of pockets allow for well-organized storage. I love the two front pockets that allow you to store shoes e without somehow adding much bulk. The laptop pocket is great, and I love the rain cover that is included. Some parts of the bag that I'm not particularly fond: 1) The lack of a pocket on the shoulder straps is annoying. They now have a pocket on the side of the bag that you are supposed to be able to access while the bag is on your back. If you have a reasonably large frame, you can't reach this pocket. I have to swing the bag off of one shoulder to reach the pocket, which means I can't access any pockets on the fly - such as when I'm stopped at a light. 2) The Kickstand is completely meh. I find the added bulk and oddly shaped frame that is necessary to make this whole concept happen makes the bag somewhat awkward and bulky when compared to the Momentum 34 that this bag replaced for me. Now the deal-breaker. This is what truly makes me wish I didn't own this pack every time I'm wearing it riding...the use of Shock Cord on the suspension system completely ruins this bag. It's supposed to move with the rider for a more comfortable fit, but in reality, it allows the bag to bounce around every time you hit a bump. To get the bag to fit securely on my back, I have to crank down the shoulder, chest, and waist straps. When I do this, the wire frame of the bag keeps hitting the back of my helmet when I am in a more aggressive handlebar position. I gave the pack 2 stars because the construction is solid and overall concept are great, but the Shock Cord suspension system negates all the positive points.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great but here's what it misses.. Great bag overall. However the hip belt could've been better padded. I often find it digs into my back as it is a little narrow. I'm a size 34 waist and it's just tiny there. Have had the bag for a out 2 years. Small wear and tear, not a huge fan of material change in the new bags.

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size the pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate.

• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size chart above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelt size info above to help determine your ideal pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
