Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long Distance Day Hiking Pack I own the Volt 75, daylite plus, and just purchased the Talon 33 Osprey Pack. It felt so great on as soon as I purchased it that I weighed it down and went hiking the next day. I have used many other day packs in 20+ years of hiking, and this is by far the best pack I have worn. It is perfect for a long distance day hike where more supplies are needed OR a winter hike where warmer clothing is needed. I was skeptical about the only one entry into the main compartment, but with the top lid pockets, belt pockets, and front net pocket. Anything you need to access is available easily. The belt is extremely comfortable and the back of the pack is breathable even with the excessive weight. The frame is secure, but it allows easy movement to scurry under or over trees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome hiking bag! I bought this as a back pack for day hikes and as a bouldering bag. It works incredibly well and is extremely comfortable. I took it on an 11 mile hike in the mountains while carrying a decent amount of gear and water. I could hardly tell that I had it on the entire time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprising Space, Well-Constructed Bought this about a month ago, and have taken it out a few times, including camping. Durable, with enough space to hold a small tent and stakes, some food, and necessities. Would probably go a little larger for a weekend trip, but perfect size for day trips or hikes. Comes complete with compression straps, a built in for trekking poles, elastic side pockets, and a nice top-load capacity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! I've been using this backpack for 7 years now, although I got a new one (from the life warranty policy!!) 2 years ago. I've taken it on an 8-month trip abroad as my only pack, and have done a month-long hiking trip with it. I also use it almost every day for classes, although it is a bit too big for this. What I love about this pack for backpacking trips is that it forces you to pack light, but you can squeeze sleeping bag, tent, and thermarest in if you really try. Super durable, and the life warranty means you might never have to buy another one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best backpack ever This is not the first backpack I have owned. I kept giving them away until I found this Osprey Talon. I bought this pack years ago and still love it. I'm a 5'3 female and this pack fits me better than any other. I can carry everything I need for day trips or for longer journeys. I also use it as a "suitcase" when travelling by automobile and get a kick out of walking into a hotel with it on my back. I like all the ways to carry outside the pack and use them. The only thing that puzzles me about the pack is the big flat stretch pocket - I have not found much use for it. I am nearly 70 years old and think this is the only pack I could carry loaded (often just over 30 pounds) and be able to go anywhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Osprey knows what they are doing! I bought this backpack with the intention of taking it on a backpacking trip through Europe. I was a bit nervous to say the least when I received it, but after packing it and preparing it with everything I need, this is the perfect pack to bring if you really want to be a minimalist. It will fit all carry on regulations and get me where I need to be with out the excess space. I have already used it for a couple overnight/weekend camping trips, and the pack fits like a charm. It is so comfortable and is adjustable at all angles. I do wish there were side zippers to access the main storage, but packing it right allows no problems. Does not include rain cover.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect in between size I bought this pack for an upcoming trip in Europe, the Tour du Mont Blanc. My multiday backpack seemed like overkill, and my daypacks just not enough for my just in case rain and snow gear, etc. I’ve now used it on several long day hikes where I need the variable weather clothing, and I have added several items I will be using on the Europe trek. I can’t tell you how impressed I am with this pack! It weighs under two pounds, yet sacrifices no comfort in the ride. I can retrieve my water bottles and return them unaided, and the hip pockets accommodate necessaries for quick access. The narrow shoulder strap pocket works great for a Kind bar or similar. It’s so much more comfortable than my day packs, that I’m taking it now instead, even when I don’t need the 33 liter capacity. I like the brain for hat and sunglasses, headband or the like, and the underbrain zip pocket is good for a wallet. I don’t use a bladder, but the external pocket would make it so much easier to check how much water is left. I find that pocket ideal for maps, or other things I want to keep flat. I haven’t used it for overnight yet. You could easily do one night, and I’m thinking I could get away with 3 nights, at least in good weather, but I do have very light gear. I had no idea how useful I would find this pack. I love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This pack keeps getting more useful I bought this for myself Christmas of 2013 intending to get my first sturdy day pack for day hikes and weekend traveling. Since, I've used it for day hikes, 2-4 day backpacking trips, other weekend trips, as a flight carry-on, and (in a pinch) as an academic bag. 5'6" female. I have an older model but I can speak to how it has held up over the years and hopefully the new models are at least as good. Overall feels: I find the bag to be quite comfortable, even when loaded with 20-30lbs of stuff. The water bottle pockets are a little difficult to get to, but I got used to it over time. I also enjoy having the brain, because I can grab a pencil/notebook/wallet/snack out of it pretty easily when I'm on the go without too much fuss. The hip pockets are also always a nice feature - I often get comments from friends about them. Overall functionality: This pack really shines as a day pack. I have never fully filled it during any day trip, so it looks kind of saggy while wearing. The brain/drawstring combo also can be a pain to get into mid-trip, but if you plan where to put snacks/water/rain jacket when you pack the bag it's less of an issue. As a multi-day pack, it can hold the basics - sleeping bag, hammock, tarp, water, first aid, a few layers, and some dense food - but I wouldn't count on bringing a stove. The brain is useful for attaching tarps and sleeping mats externally by just clipping the straps down. As an academic pack this is not so great. It's a pain to get into during classes and it's just not made to hold textbooks and notebooks. As a weekend travel pack, it can hold everything without being too bulky on trains/buses, and it's comfortable to wear even in a crowded urban area. Overall durability: The back has sagged weirdly and is now less comfortable, especially when it isn't holding many items. There are no major rips, buckle breaks, or seam failures though and that says something about the quality.

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size the pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate.

• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size chart above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelt size info above to help determine your ideal pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
