Product Reviews
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this kayak! I bought this kayak in February of 2023 and it is everything I hoped it would be. The PDL is perfect for fishing as it allows me to cast as I move forward or backward. It's super sturdy and has plenty of space. Too, the seat is very comfortable and I've sat in it all day with no problems whatsoever. I would buy this again without hesitation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handles Chop, Covers Lots Of Water Efficiently THE GOOD:<br><br> Quotes from the Old Town Salty web page:<br> a. "If you fish and play Coastal areas.........."<br> b. "..........at home in the waves having fun!"<br> c. "Fun, zippy and stable - this is a great grab-n-go pedal kayak. Tides and currents, waves and surf - this should be your choice for moving water"<br> d. "Tank wells.......... provide big open areas for.......... a dog"<br><br> As advertised, toss in a couple of rods and tackle boxes/bait (and maybe the family dog), the Salty is truly a great grab-n-go kayak. It tracks well and cuts through current, choppy water, and windy conditions efficiently. Using about the same effort required for a leisurely to moderately-low paced bicycle ride, the Salty accelerates quickly, and easily maintains speeds of 2.5 to 3.5 mph. Increase the pedaling tempo, and the Salty responds - zipping right along with little effort. Having a displacement hull of approximately 12 ft (or possibly less at the waterline), the theoretical maximum speed is 4.6 knots or 5.3 mph (where the displacement hull formula = hull speed in knots equals 1.34 times the square root of the waterline length in feet). Typical outings have included covering 8 to 10 miles of inshore coastal waters (15 miles max to date), where fatigue has been a non-issue, pedaling at a leisurely pace.<br><br> As a grab-n-go kayak that is competitively priced for the recreational angler (and/or dog parents wanting an open bow area for family members), Old Town did not skimp or dumb down on quality and features. The seat is comfortable. The universal transducer mount and bow scupper hole made installing a fish finder fairly straightforward. The open bow storage area conveniently accommodates both a lithium battery wrapped in a tash bag and tied to the supplied bungee (no issues experienced to date), and the day's catch (or the family dog instead). There is storage built into the PDL drive unit, as well as space under the seat (in addition to the storage slot built into the seat), to keep accessories within easy reach. The weight and narrower hull makes car topping more manageable.<br><br> THE BAD:<br><br> a. When a fishing rod is placed in the forward facing rod holder, it makes access to the rudder control awkward.<br><br> b. The tranducer cavity at the bottom of the hull is somewhat shallow in depth. Hence for taller transducers, the bow of the kayak ends up resting on the transducer, instead of resting on the sacrificial skid plate.<br><br> OTHER NOTE(S):<br><br> Some folks may find the Salty a wet ride, as water does splash over the top in chop or windy conditions.<br><br> CONCLUSION:<br><br> Overall, I am enjoying the Salty as a first kayak, it delivers as advertised - it is a fun grab-n-go platform, takes on chop, efficiently cuts through moving water/wind, and is good value for the money. The fish dinners (caught from the Salty), have been delicious. I would definitely recommend the Salty for the type of water it was built to operate in, and the for intended use it was designed for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit! I am coming from a beautiful sit in sea kayak which was fast on the water. After moving to fishing from the kayak, I realized that I need a sit on top kayak and one with a pedal. After researching for a few weeks I decided the Salty 120 PDL had the perfect set of features for me, not too big and wide(would be a challenge in mangroves) and harder logistically from car to garage and car to spot, fast! (could not believe how easy this was to move in the water- I even towed my wife without feeling any strain), great maneuverability(turning radius, turns on a dime), hands free!(forward AND reverse instantly) and last of all great price point (I was actually prepared to spend more so I am happy to be under budget). I have only been out on it 3 times, 2 times barely getting to fish but I can't wait to go out to the Keys the first weekend. I MUST get some mangrove snapper with this baby. You will not regret this purchase unless you are a big time fisherman(competition level) where you may want more room). I also take bird photos from the kayak so I can't wait to go hunting now that my hands will be free to shoot while my feet are busy keeping me in place. I have started rigging it up to be the ultimate customized watercraft that can sneak up on snappers and birds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy upgrade from 106 and Outback This is the second Old Town kayak I brought new. The first one was top water 106, for two years. This one is a considerable upgrade and I am happy with it. Same stability, but much faster and nimble (fast turns) than the 106. Speed is important for me as I like to travel longer, get there faster, and a good workout. I also like the clean and simple deck in front of me, I don't miss the side pockets of other kayaks I own. I have a Hobie Outback as well, 2017 model, but always wanted the instant reverse for in-shore fishing. Simplicity of the Salty ensures low price and the same rock-solid drive that from two years of intensely use of 106 I never had any issue and no maintenance compared with the Outback. The only drawback is that in windy conditions, boat can get wet easily as it cut through the big waves as I go fast, so I have to leave the holes open to ensure no water accumulation. I have not measured it, but the two sides next to the seat seems to be a bit lower than the 106 or Outback.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value Pedal Kayak Going from a paddle kayak to a pedal kayak is magical. I really enjoy this kayak. It has a great pedal drive, good features (3 built in rod holders, 18” gear tracks, comfortable seat). I have fished in my friend’s predator PDL and this is a little less stable but still very easy to stand in and cast. One worry I had was about the lack of a closed bow hatch. However, I decided to use a dry bag to put in the bow well to house the sonar’s battery and it worked well! It is very quick (top speed 5 knots) and has a great turning radius. The ability to lock the rudder direction is great for both trolling and drifting. It was simple to set up the sonar with the provided transducer scupper hole in the bow well and the transducer mounting plate. At 85 pounds, I am able to carry it, though it’s a little tricky, but not too heavy to put on a car top carrier. One minor negative is that accessory pockets or spaces for pliers/lures/etc that I’ve seen in other kayaks aren’t really present in this one (though there is storage in the PDL drive itself). However I found using the provided under-seat tackle box and space appropriate for these things as well. Overall, I am very pleased and think this is probably the best combo of quality and affordability you’ll find in a pedal fishing kayak.
