Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Furnace This stove is solid. Plenty of BTU. Excited to have a significant decrease in snow melt time on Rainier next week. It's a little bigger and heavier than the canister stoves but for high elevation and colder environments it's worth it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Workhorse for long time Got my first XGK in 1989. Number two was the XGK II model and I bought it 2005. When the EX was released I got it because of the much improved legs. My XGK II is still roaring away, but it stays in my cabin as a backup nowadays. Back in the 80-s and into the beginning of the 2000 I logged some 80-90 nights out every year. The different editions of XGK-s never once failed and they were used I guess for at least 50% of the time, winter or summer, when in remote places or just because it was the most convenient with regard to availability of fuel. Nowadays I dont logg 80 nights a year anymore but maybe 25-30 and I enjoy at least one winter week hiking in the mountains. My XGK is the number one choice for any endeavour that includes cold, windy, remote conditions. It allways roars after igniting and allows me/us to melt, boil, fry and occasionally warm up the tent :).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An Absolute Workhorse! Ihis stove is my first choice for any winter expedition! It can run on just about any fuel, i have actually heard rumors that some people use moonshine for fuel with this! It dishes out enough power to make the usually tedious process of melting snow go in an instant, which in turn makes for better fuel rationing, and a lighter sled. And it is reliable! I have field-cleaned mine only 3 times over the years, and it goes easy! If you like to cook, then maybe check out another stove. This stove only really has two modes. Off and rocket blast. Beware though, after using this stove for many years, i have LEARNED to cook with it. So the only real drawback left is the noise. With all the power this thing puts out, dont expect to be having a quiet conversation with your bivvy-mate. But in the end, when i leave for a serious winter trip, there is no other stove i would rather bring. You can rely on this stove with your life!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has not let me down This stove is a champ! It will light in the wind, cold or damp conditions. It has great temperature control allowing variability with the valve or pressure in the fuel container. I purchased this stove for winter backpacking and was able to get it lit at -18F. It took some doing, because the fuel had minimal vapor pressure at this temperature, but the stove finally lit. The plastic components in the pump worked fine at this temperature. My only complaint is that it is difficult to slip a lit match through the slot in the stove housing to ignite the fuel. This limitation becomes more pronounced in windy conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this stove again! This stove fires into action like a jet engine. Louder than some of the other MSR stoves, it produces heat and a sense of well being. The food is on it's way! A little heavier than the whisper lite series if you are backpacking, but worth he extra weigh in output. For cyclist tours and kayaking, this stove is the business.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Stove Great stove, burns Auto Gas with no problems. Fires up every time easily and disassembles easily. Would recommend without any hesitation.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from We will see I go into really cold areas once or twice a year for a week or so in Alaska or Canada and basically just get away by myself and camp. I take a Seva123 stove which has served me well for many years, but decided to get a new stove to try out. I like the increased amount of fuel and the stove is quite stable. It is actually a little harder/dangerous to light than the Seva123, as I just use fire ribbon with it and it is not pressurized. All said I will see how the plastic holds up in the cold, that's my main concern. I cannot understand why MSR went with a plastic pump. As it needs a fuel bottle to operate, one should be included. Also I do not think there is a cook set that is stove specific.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Much improved Really like the new style (foldable legs, flexible fuel line) which is way more compact than the old version and seems a bit lighter.
