The MSR WhisperLite Universal is a hybrid-fuel stove which offers the convenience of running on canisters and the versatility of accepting liquid fuels (including cold-weather performance). The AirControl™ technology optimizes the fuel/air mixture for perfect performance with white gas, canister fuel, kerosene and unleaded gasoline. No matter where you go in the universe, you'll find a fuel to use with this stove. Even if you go to Jupiter, there will be some sort of space gas that the WhisperLite Universal could run on.... if not, just use some of your rocket fuel.

(warning: do not actually run this stove on rocket fuel. And make sure you know a thing or two about Jupiter before camping there.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best alternative to BioLite in Quetico In honesty, we prefer BioLite in Quetico. But the portability and the range of available weather can't be beat. It is a trusty companion during the week-long trip in the wilderness. It never failed with us in seven expeditions. On the hiking trip abroad, I choose to bring WhisperLite and find the canister fuel upon landing. It requires priming prior to using: be very gentle when the priming fuel is seeping. But once the stove is warmer, the canister requires pumping occasionally but BioLite would require feeding dry wood more frequently to maintain the burning ability. Thus WhisperLite is my choice for the long run.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A well-engineered classic Just bought this as our first liquid fuel stove. My old Pocket Rocket still works great for fast and light trips where all I need to do is boil water. This has changed the way we eat in the Backcountry among other places. It allows us to be extremely flexible in our meal choices as well as our fuel choices. Outstanding design. Very reliable and easily serviceable. Can't say enough good things about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Stove This is a great little stove for any occasion. I have only used it with a canister, and it performs just as I expected, perfectly. Screw on the canister and light it up, quick and simple. And there is no maintenance when using a canister. Inverting the canister improves the heat output, which is a bonus as well. It is compact, lightweight, and easy to pack. Almost forgot to mention that it can burn practically any fuel, liquid or isopro. It is sooo diverse, that it is a no brainer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stove I've used the Whisperlite Universal throughout this past winter in liquid fuel mode. Temps ranged from -25Celsius to +10 Celsius, sometimes in strong winds. The stove always starts well and the flame is reliable. It is well worth the additionnal effort of pumping the fuel and the wait time once the flame is lit. The flame is very consistent even when the fuel level in the bottle is low. It allows simmering very well. I've cooked fish, meats and veggies on this stove. The stove is wide enough to accomodate a pan with at least 9 inches of diameter. The legs are also very stable. The windscreen is great but it cannot accomodate a pan with the handle out. It requires more maintenance than a regular liquid canister stove but it is worth it to have a fully functionnal stove in harsher environments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great features! I just picked up this stove and am glad I did. It gives you the versatility of running both gas and liquid fuels. Which is great, except that this stove's white gas capabilities kind of obviate its butane capabilities. White gas has a substantially better gross energy density than either form of butane due to its minimal container requirements, and with an aftermarket heat exchanger pot and proper use of the included heat reflectors, you can get energy efficiency of over 70%, rivaling or even surpassing that of stoves like the jetboil. Plus, white gas is CHEAP compared even to N-butane.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Significant weakness now corrected! I wrote an earlier review, quite positive, but noting a real weakness in the gas cannister attachment - the soft aluminium casting's thread strips easily if the cannister isn't mounted exactly straight (think using it hundreds of times, then in the dark, with gloves, in a wind, without reading glasses... It happens). Well MSR twice replaced it free (good service) but this second time I see the thread is now a brass insert, and even looks replaceable. So the problem may be much reduced, and it's realistic to carry a spare. At least one other review also complained about this flaw. Also, maybe it's easier to avoid cross threading in the first place if the cannister leg attachment is left on the fitting, making it easier to grasp. Next request - a cap to stop muck getting into the attachment when the cannister is detached.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good, not sure MSR's heart is really in cannisters On 30,000km cycle trip, has been pretty good, using cannister, White gas, and motorbike petrol. Windscreen now near to collapse, but still works. Not perfect though. Stiff fuel line can lead to sudden upsets. Manufacturing debris in pump resulted in a replacement (free, great service across continents). Cannister gas attachment is soft metal, very easily damaged by cross threading onto the steel cannister - maybe replacement is free, but could be very inconvenient, depending on the where it happens. Some cleaning procedures require loading & pumping liquid fuel, so not usable when only using cannister.

What is the smallest pot/mug I can put on the stove? Can I use it with my Snowpeak mug that has a bottom diameter of 3.5 inches?

Asked by: Jimbo
Thanks for reaching out to us. From our findings is that the diameter of the stove is 3" but the smallest size pot/mug that would fit on the stove without damaging itself is 4.5-5". We hope this helps.

I have the same stove, but from roughly 20 years ago. Still works perfectly every time. My question: have they made changes to the design over the years or is this really the same whisperlite?

Asked by: steve
Hiya steve, thanks for your question! According to MSR, this stove is relatively new (not 20 years old). You might have the Whisperlite International or another older incarnation. Regardless, the stove design is basically the same. There were some mini changes to the jets and the legs are now stamped steel instead of wire, but the original version sounds like it is doing just fine for you. If you ever need any replacement parts or repairs, contact MSR directly and they should be able to help you. Hope this helps!
