Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again for sure Awesome construction and extremely well made. You can pay for cheaper filters elsewhere that are probably made in areas with less standards but not MSR, they continue to show their quality of work and performance through their business model. Would recommend this to anyone who needs a lot of water quickly and doesn't have time to fill a bag and wait for gravity to treat your water.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It is OK... I have had this filter for a couple years now. While I have always loved and trusted MSR gear, this filter has frustrated me many times in the backcountry. I can usually get about 1-3 liters out of it before it stops working, pushing water back down the hose rather than through the filter. I take it apart and scrub the filter only to get about 1-2 more liters before its 'clogged' again. I only filter in mountain lakes and streams that are very clean and have no visible 'cloudiness' to them. While its nice to see this filter is catching more than I can see, I feel a product like this should be able to filter way more than a couple liters before having to be cleaned. If I am trying to fill multiple bottles for the night, friends with other filters get about 3 to my 1 bottle. I love MSR stoves, but I have a tough time liking this filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding product, even after many years Over 22 years and still going strong! It's not the most compact filter, and not the lightest, but it is particularly easy to maintain. Fantastic filter that tends to have very little go wrong, as long as the water is not too murky. I recommend that you let silty or muddy water settle out before pumping. Otherwise, you'll be cleaning the filter every litre. I love the ceramic filter that lasts and lasts--thousands and thousands of litres, year after year. The only time I have ever had a problem with the filter was when dropped it on a rock and cracked it while cleaning it. Pop in a new filter and good to go for more thousands of litres.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Over 10 years old and still working perfecty I purchased my MiniWorks for backpacking, but for the last ten years I have used it to filter all of our drinking water for the 2-4 weeks we are at our cabin in Newfoundland. It still works perfectly. I came to the website to see if I should consider replacing any parts or at least having spare parts on hand next year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My personal favorite Cleanable and sturdy for long trips to places where the water is dirty and silty. I have used it for many long trips to South America, Nepal, and India. It is slow and you have to clean it sometimes twice a day if you need a lot of water, but it keeps right on working after months of cleaning the filter. You also have to lubricate the pump mechanism now and then or it squeaks. The real deal for me is that all the other non cleanable filters simply work until you get to dirty water (like the tap water in Kathmandu) then they clog quickly and are done. The MSR mini waterworks is the only filter I have found that just keeps going cleaning after cleaning. Slow, heavy and require ongoing maintenance. Bottom line, the best!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I own 2 of them! I see some negative comments about the filter plugging up after a liter of water and then using tablets for the rest of the trip. Are you insane? The filter plugged because of all the nasty dirt in the water plugging it up. Truly clean water will not plug up this filter, even after 20+liters of water. If you pump dirty water in it will plug up faster and that proves the water is not that clean. I have 2 of these and keep one in my camping gear and the other in my Search and Rescue bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dependable Water Filter for Group and Expedition Use Was issued a MSR Miniworks as my primary means of treating water while deployed to South Sudan for a year. The quality of water ranged from fair (but probably not potable) to brown sludge. The filter was mostly used to keep two 20 litre jerry cans filled with potable water for drinking and food preparation/cooking, as well as being taken on patrols lasting between one and ten days. I never had any problems and never got sick. The only downside was when filtering particularly dirty water, it became very in-efficent with the ceramic filter required cleaning up to every few litres. Having said that, it was certainly a better option than using a mill bag and sterilisation tabs! The other down side is that it is quite bulky for one person use, and I was always a little wary of cracking the ceramic filter when my pack was being thrown about on patrol. But I never had any problems, so I was probably being over cautious. This bit of kit would probably be the thing I'd take away on an overseas trip with a small group (up to six), and would be a good alternative if your budget did stretch to a full on purifier like the Guardian for third world countries. Little bummed that I had to hand it back at the end of my deployment.

I have an older model of the MSR Miniworks Filter, I've had for probably 20 years. The cartridge in mine is completely round and has an O-rings at both ends. This one looks like different. Will this work in the older models like mine?

Asked by: Misfit
Hey there, Misfit! You asked a great question, and I think we have a great answer for you, too. Our friends at MSR tell us that, while the design of the ceramic element has been upgraded over the years and is slightly different from the well-seasoned one you had in your Miniworks Filter, it should still work for you. They designed it to be compatible with even the older filters. I hope this helps!
