Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb, if you follow the instructions! Clean tasting, safe water. This pump has been a mainstay of my family's back country trips for years. In most visibly clear environments, it slows significantly after 2-4 litres, and becomes nearly unusable after around 8. Air will start to flash back into the supply tube, and little filtrate will come through. That's how it's supposed to work! 0.2 micrometers is a very small particle size, smaller than most bacteria. The filter is capturing these subvisible particulates and passing only pure water (note: the filter cannot stop viruses, so do not use it alone where viral diseases like Hepatitis A are possible). To restore the flow, you simply need to very, VERY gently scrub off the outer layer of the filter with the supplied scrub pad (or a less abrasive one, which works just fine!), and you instantly have a new filter surface and a 'like new' flow rate.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible. Bottom line. This product has stopped working on me twice in the backcountry. The first time was during trip out into the backcountry, it was the first time I took this product out to use it outside of my house and it broke, so I returned the product and had it replaced. Just this past weekend, after 3 trips with the replaced filter, the same thing happened. The product just literally stops pumping. I have read other reviews with the same problem. I am baffled and frustrated. If a product that is designed to be used in the backcountry is not reliable, then whats the point... Very unhappy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Patience and Energy This product works but you need to have patience and energy. I am going to look into another product a this one takes to much time and effort to pump. I felt like I may have been being picky as I should be happy that this product allows me to have clean drinking water but with an average of 1000 pumps per litre, my arms are tired of that work. When you first try the pump with a dry filter, the water comes out fast, but after that make sure you have a chair to plop in the water while you pump. After a long morning or portaging and canoeing , having to exert this much energy to pump water is simple a pain. Sorry MSR but try it out for yourselves, you would get tired too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again for sure Awesome construction and extremely well made. You can pay for cheaper filters elsewhere that are probably made in areas with less standards but not MSR, they continue to show their quality of work and performance through their business model. Would recommend this to anyone who needs a lot of water quickly and doesn't have time to fill a bag and wait for gravity to treat your water.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It is OK... I have had this filter for a couple years now. While I have always loved and trusted MSR gear, this filter has frustrated me many times in the backcountry. I can usually get about 1-3 liters out of it before it stops working, pushing water back down the hose rather than through the filter. I take it apart and scrub the filter only to get about 1-2 more liters before its 'clogged' again. I only filter in mountain lakes and streams that are very clean and have no visible 'cloudiness' to them. While its nice to see this filter is catching more than I can see, I feel a product like this should be able to filter way more than a couple liters before having to be cleaned. If I am trying to fill multiple bottles for the night, friends with other filters get about 3 to my 1 bottle. I love MSR stoves, but I have a tough time liking this filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple to use I've used this filter to purify about 5-6 gallons of river water with absolutely no problems... Excellent product and Moose Jaw delivered two days earlier than expected... MSR and Moose Jaw rocked it...!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding product, even after many years Over 22 years and still going strong! It's not the most compact filter, and not the lightest, but it is particularly easy to maintain. Fantastic filter that tends to have very little go wrong, as long as the water is not too murky. I recommend that you let silty or muddy water settle out before pumping. Otherwise, you'll be cleaning the filter every litre. I love the ceramic filter that lasts and lasts--thousands and thousands of litres, year after year. The only time I have ever had a problem with the filter was when dropped it on a rock and cracked it while cleaning it. Pop in a new filter and good to go for more thousands of litres.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Over 10 years old and still working perfecty I purchased my MiniWorks for backpacking, but for the last ten years I have used it to filter all of our drinking water for the 2-4 weeks we are at our cabin in Newfoundland. It still works perfectly. I came to the website to see if I should consider replacing any parts or at least having spare parts on hand next year.

what is the purpose of the red crescent shaped piece from the picture?

Asked by: curious george
When the gage (red crescent shaped piece) can fit around the filter element, the element has been cleaned to the point it needs to be replaced. When the filter is cleaned using the included cleaning pad, the cleaning pad removes bit of the filter element. Eventually the filter element will be reduced to a minimum size for proper effectiveness and will need to be replaced. The gage will allow you to determine when that time has come.

Reviews show ups and downs. Has there been any type of redesign on this product lately ? Or is it operator era ? I would like to purchase one, but reviews leave me wondering. Thanks

Asked by: Brad
Brad, There has not been a redesign on the MSR Miniworks EX Microfilter. I took a moment to read through the reviews and, Im not seeing a consistent issue. The thing in the reviews that is consistent is praise. I have seen the MSR Miniworks EX Microfilter filter water, and it worked wonderfully. I hope that this helps. Happy Trails.
