Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Filter! We hike and multi-day camp a lot, and this filter allows us to cut our pack weight in half by carrying 1 bottle/person. With 4 small kids, stomach issues cannot be an issue in the backcountry, but with the Guarduan, we feel confident pumping from the grossest lakes and foot-trafficked streams: water is always clean, clear and crisp. Incredibly fast and consistent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing piece of equipment Works incredibly fast, I can filter 3 liters in under 5 minutes. Water tastes great. I’ve tried the nastiest puddles I can find in the desert and this filter always works great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome filter but needs a connection for water bags I absolutely love this filter. It has transformed my trips into the Grand Canyon, where water filters generally go to die. This pump can handle the silty Colorado water and keeps on working. My issue is with the ergonomics - specifically, having to pump into an attached Nalgene bottle. Many of us use water bags made by Platypus, which is also part of Cascade Designs! Luckily, I discovered that it is possible to take the hose from the MSR Gravity Works filter system and just attach it to the nipple on the bottom of the Guardian. Not only does it allow you to fill up a Platypus, but it also means you don't have to hold the water weight in a Nalgene while you're pumping. Two years ago I had to pump 26 liters of water for a group of 6, and if I had also had to support the extra 1-2 lbs of water in a Nalgene bottle while I pumped, my arms would have fallen off. Honestly, I don't know why this isn't a standard option offered by MSR, AS I HAVE SUGGESTED IN SEVERAL EMAILS TO YOU, MSR. WAKE UP! You can make this a better product and actually support your Platypus division by adding a hose and standard connection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Taste, Easy To Use Husband and I bought this to use on our trip to Peru this year. We've been testing it at home and on small hiking trips. Works great, water tastes good. Definitely worth the money for longer hikes in remote places

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dependable buy Gravity filters failed us before, and you can’t put a price on water when you’re in the backcountry.. This filter doesn’t disappoint. It’s easy to use, solidly built, and easy to pack as it’s about the size of a nalgene. Worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent filter Finally upgraded to the pinnacle of filters. This filter is pricey, but the speed and reliability it provides is superior. Also, the peace of mind it provides on every trip, offsets the higher initial cost. MSR's ability to connect to a wide-mouth Nalgene is always handy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This filter can make or break a relationship! I can't say for certain, but here's the story: I took my kids backpacking in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area in the North Cascade mountains last summer. Our climb would be strenuous and I wanted to ensure we could manage the water weight for the kids, without incurring too much risk at high elevation in the summer. After reading the reviews of the Guardian, I decided to make it my "gear investment" of the year. The Guardian performed perfectly from the start--whenever we crossed a water source and needed to refill, I could fill 1.5 liters in under a minute and we were back on our way. Which was good, because the climb was slightly more strenuous than I had anticipated, and my 14 year old daughter was on her first backcountry trip. (They say tragedy plus time equals humor, by the time I'm ready for a nursing home, I'm hoping she'll look back on this trip and consider it hilarious.) Anyway, we reached our base campsite, pitched our tents and did some day hikes/exploring. Again, the Guardian reduced the amount of water weight we had to carry, made water stops quick and easy and kept "Dad's safety margin" at a comfortable level. On our last night, I went down to fill up water for dinner. I made friends with a young lady backpacking with her boyfriend--she was pumping away on an older filter. She commented on the Guardian's rate of fill--I wished her well, ran up the hill, started water boiling and made the kids lemonade. Fifteen minutes later, I ran back down to refill for washing/tooth brushing later on. She was still pumping away, and clearly not happy. I helped her finish off their 100L bag in two minutes for good karma. As we watched a meteor shower in the mountain silence, the kids and I heard the exasperated young lady telling her boyfriend "This old filter sucks--if you want this relationship to last, you're getting me an MSR Guardian!"

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great purifier, but the handle broke right at 1 year I've been full time truck camping for the past 2.5 years in Colorado and was annoyed with gravity filtration systems that take forever to process water. I wanted a solution where I could safely process large quantities of water in a short amount of time. Enter the Guardian - I REALLY liked this high volume water purifier. It jams through water in no time and is easy to use. My only complaint is the small plastic loop piece that attaches the handle to the purifier pump broke right at 12 months so I can no longer purify water. I thought "No problem, I'll just go back to Cabela's where I purchased this purifier and exchange it for a new one." Unfortunately Cabela's changed their return and receipt policy where they no longer keep purchases stored in the system and I couldn't get my original receipt reprinted in order for me to send proof of purchase to MSR so I couldn't get a replacement...frustrating. So although I really did love this purifier, I feel as though the handle should last for more than 12 months since the cost is upwards of $350.

For the MSR Guardian; are spare parts/components available? Or is a second unit the best "spare"?

Asked by: iceman01
Hey there, Thanks for reaching out to us! Your best bet if you're seeking spare parts would be to contact MSR directly at: 206-505-9500.

I didn't see any information on whether the filter could be changed, or if there were any indicators on when it needed changed. Looks awesome, definitely considering the purchase.

Asked by: Mike
Hey there, Thanks for the question. The filter cartridge on this item can be replaced/changed. You typically will know to change it when the flow rate drops to less than 1L a minute when pumping 70 strokes per minute. The filter will still be purifying water, but as the flow rate drops with use more wear appears on the internal parts. I hope this helps.

Will this convert salt water?

Asked by: Duke
No, this is simply a filter which does not remove chemicals, toxins, or heavy metals. It is effective down to 0.02µm (microns). (Technical info from the MSR website). If you're looking for a portable, hand operated desalinator, check out Katadyn.
