Opting-in to Moosejaw Rewards:
All users must accept these terms and conditions and create an account with Moosejaw to opt-in to the program and earn, accrue, retain and redeem Moosejaw Reward Dollars (MJ$). The program is FREE to join and membership is ongoing until or unless the user requests to be removed or is removed due to abuse of the program. Users can opt-in to the program while checking out on Moosejaw.com or at one of our stores or at any time within 30 days of purchase to accrue the MJ$ earned on that purchase. Once opted-in to the program, MJ$ will earn and accrue for redemption as described below until the MJ$ expire or the user leaves the program.
All information collected and used to facilitate the Moosejaw Rewards program is directly related to the program's ability to provide value to the customer. A customer opting-in to the Moosejaw Rewards program is a separate action from establishing a user profile as a result of making a purchase.
The program opt-in requirement was added on August 6th, 2019. Existing program members prior to that date must still formally opt-in and accept the terms and conditions to continue to retain, earn and redeem MJ$. Pre-existing program members that fail to opt-in prior to June 28, 2020 will be removed from the program, and any unused MJ$ will be voided. We really, really don't want to that to happen, so please opt-in or we'll feel terrible.
Leaving Moosejaw Rewards Program:
You may choose to leave the Moosejaw Rewards program at any time by logging in and clicking on the “Opt out Rewards Program” link within the My Account Summary page, Email, calling 877-MOOSEJAW (877-666-7352) or in-store with help from our employees. If you leave the rewards program, any unused MJ$ will be voided upon completion of your request.
Earning MJ$:
All items we sell are eligible with the exception of gift cards or other items specifically noted. Full-priced items earn 10% back while discounted items earn 2.5%. "Discounted items" includes items on sale or discounted via coupon code or use of MJ$. You do not earn MJ$ for shipping or tax charges, only from the item value. MJ$ expire two years after earning and are redeemed on a first-in, first out basis (in other words, we always use your oldest MJ$ that are closest to expiration).
Checking & Redeeming MJ$:
On Moosejaw.com, just sign-in on any page to see your available balance. Once signed in, you will see your available MJ$ and maximum that can be redeemed in the payment section of the checkout process. In stores, provide the email address attached to your account to learn your balance and apply to your purchase. We will also send you a monthly email that details your balance and other account activity. This is a transactional email that you will receive even if you are not subscribed to our marketing emails.
Bonus Rewards Promotions:
Every so often, we'll have special offers where you can earn bonus MJ$, like an additional 10%, 20% or 40% back. So if we are running a 50% back special offer, and you buy a regular-priced item for $100.00, you will receive MJ$10.00 in base points, and a bonus of MJ$40. These special offers may have a cap on how many bonus MJ$ you earn during the promotion, but you will always earn the base Reward Dollars. MJ$ on Gift Cards:

Product Returns and MJ$:
If you return an item, we deduct the MJ$ earned on that item from your balance. If you used the MJ$ and your balance is less than deduction, then your refund is reduced by the difference.

Incredible Filter!We hike and multi-day camp a lot, and this filter allows us to cut our pack weight in half by carrying 1 bottle/person. With 4 small kids, stomach issues cannot be an issue in the backcountry, but with the Guarduan, we feel confident pumping from the grossest lakes and foot-trafficked streams: water is always clean, clear and crisp. Incredibly fast and consistent.

Too risky and poor serviceI bought the Guardian for treks to faraway places. With the bottom gasket leaking and the real possibility of some moving parts breaking or getting lost I have decided that this is too risky as a sole source of clean water. Probably the GUARDIAN GRAVITY WATER PURIFIER would be a far better option (but I now don't have the money). MSR have NEVER responded to my emails. It even took me one year after ordering the Guardian to receive it. Spare parts or spare filters might be too much to hope for.

Not reliable enoughI have the Guardian Purifier (I had to wait over one year to get it). Water leaks out from the lower gasket and from the reviews for this product it seems that we will have to look out for certain plastic pins to fail as well. In light of this we will probably not take this Purifier on our backcountry trips. Here in Australia you can't even get replacement filters or parts. I wish we had waited for (never knew it was coming) for the Guardian Gravity Purifier that would it seems eliminate all of the above problems. This is also a problem for Australians because this item is not available. When you try to buy from overseas they tell you they are not allowed to send to Australia. Ever heard of Catch 22? Thank you.

Great When It Works...But You'll Want to Take a BackupTAKE A BACKUP! We bought the Guardian wanting the best purification solution that would give us peace of mind no matter where we traveled. Put it to work for the first time on a short trip to Lake Superior, MI backcountry where it was likely overkill. I had read the reviews on this site, on REI's and on various other reputable sources and heard enough good things to give it a shot. The Guardian is terrific when it is working properly, fast flow rate and smart design that make it simple to use. But, you'll notice that many of the negative reviews point out that there are specific failure points. I am glad I paid attention to them and brought a smaller back up filter and chem treatment because on our last night in the woods the o-ring failed and water was pouring out of the bottom of the filter assembly from all sides. Needless to say, "disappointed" doesn't accurately describe my reaction. I hope MSR can make this situation right for me personally, and more importantly fix the robustness issue or at least issue guidance on how to prevent it from happening in the future.

Love my guardian, MSR customer service has left me hangingI've had my guardian for a couple years and it's absolutely the best filter/purifier I've used. The filter itself is 5 stars. However, on my last backcountry trip, the pre-filter piece snapped off (it's just a plastic joint, so it didn't take much) and I've submitted two repair/warranty tickets. MSR has not replied to either of my warranty tickets (despite confirmation that they were received). All I'm asking for is a new pre filter piece. At this point, I'd gladly buy a replacement piece but I can't even find one anywhere in Canada.

Loved it until it failed in the backcountryI have owned this purifier for around five years and even though it is heavy and very expensive, I have always loved it. That is until my recent trip where it completely failed by leaking unfiltered water from the plastic base rendering it completely useless. This could have turned into a dangerous situation if we didn’t have a backup filtration plan. After a quick internet search it appears that this is a common failure point. While the recommend fix of unscrewing the black plastic base to leave a gap seems to resolve the issue, I am not sure I would be comfortable relying on this product anymore. It clearly seems to be a design flaw that MSR should work to resolve given that this filter is one of the most expensive products on the market.

Great unit. When I firstGreat unit. When I first used it, the pin that holds the handle fell off and I spent 20-30 minutes looking for the 2 piece pin in the stream i was filtering water from. Now I know to make sure to check on the pin so it doesn’t fall off again. the pin always wants to fall off on its own and then i have to click it back closed again.
Other than that issue, the filter works great

The best availableWE have been using the Guardian Purifier for several years now and just purchased out third one. We use it in a wilderness camp for up to 9 people for two weeks duration. We have never had a problem with the device or supplying ample water for each group. Several of our guests have purchased on for their own use after using the Guardian in our camp.
For the MSR Guardian; are spare parts/components available? Or is a second unit the best "spare"?

I didn't see any information on whether the filter could be changed, or if there were any indicators on when it needed changed. Looks awesome, definitely considering the purchase.

Hey there,
Thanks for the question. The filter cartridge on this item can be replaced/changed. You typically will know to change it when the flow rate drops to less than 1L a minute when pumping 70 strokes per minute. The filter will still be purifying water, but as the flow rate drops with use more wear appears on the internal parts. I hope this helps.

No, this is simply a filter which does not remove chemicals, toxins, or heavy metals. It is effective down to 0.02µm (microns). (Technical info from the MSR website).

Can the filter be cleaned and reused or does it have to be replaced?

Hey there, thanks for your question.
The true elegance of the MSR Guardian Purifier Pump is that its a completely self cleaning non chemical filter. The fibers in the filter have tiny holes, too small for even a virus to fit through, the only thing that passes is clean water. Check out the video below at about 4min 45sec, they show it being used to pull water out of a puddle full of cow plops, it shows the prefilter in action as well as a pretty cool display of the ugly brown water coming back out of the filter with crystal clear water still being pumped.
The only time you need to replace your filter would be if it physically broke, or after 10,000 liters just because enough is enough and it's time for the poor thing to have a rest.
