The MSR Dragonfly Stove is a backcountry cooking workhorse. It is capable of handling a variety of fuels and reliable enough to be the only stove you'll need for years and years. My buddy Geoff, has one of these and brings it on all of our trips. His signature dishes are pasta in the summer and melted snow in the winter. Geoff isn't the most handy guy either, but has no trouble with maintenance and has had his Dragonfly running at peak efficiency since I've known him.

FEATURES of the MSR Dragonfly Stove

  • Unrivaled Flame Control: Dual-valve technology allows precision simmer-to-boil control with a simple twist of the flame adjuster
  • Extra Wide Pot Supports: Easily holds up to 10" diameter MSR pots or fry pans
  • Multi-Fuel: Burns white gas, kerosene, unleaded auto fuel, diesel, and jet fuel
  • Efficient: Suspended burner cup produces a strong burn while reducing heat lost to the ground
  • Field Maintainable: Shaker Jet technology and smart engineering allow complete, easy cleaning and maintenance in the field
  • Compact: Folds to 1/3 of its working size and fits in a two-liter MSR pot for easy storage

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nearly perfect I had been using my Coleman 442 dual-fuel stove for 20+ years when I was driving up to Quetico for a week-long canoe trip and realized I left my stove at home. It was too far to go back, so I bought a Dragonfly on my way up. After a week of use, I'm going to have a hard time going back to my Coleman. Pros: - Awesome simmer - Big and stable base for large pots - Folds up compact - Powerful - Fuel-efficient Cons: - Loud (very loud, but I can put up with it) - ** The pump and fittings for the Dragonfly are a different size than the other MSR stoves!! My friend brought a Whisperlight International and he accidentally grabbed my fuel-bottle w/ pump attached and we found they are not compatible. The Dragonfly pump-fitting and pump are a slightly larger diameter than the Whisperlight. We each brought our own pumps, but if for some reason we lost/damaged one, it would be nice to be able to just use the other pump with it. My 20 year old MSR WaterWorks can use the same filter-cartridge as the newer MiniWorks EX. Why is there not the same convenient cross-compatibility with the stoves? It's not a deal-breaker, but just something surprising.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the only stove worth considering for backpacking trips My parents had one (gave it to my sister 20 year old stove) and i have had mine for about 10 years. both stoves have always operated flawlessly and neither has ever spilled a meal. once i got grit in the stove and it got bunged up on that 7 day backpacking trip but because its built to be servicable i didnt even have to suffer a single cold meal. i took it apart cleaned it after the days hiking and had it back together in time for dinner. i will never ever reccomend ANY other stove to anyone. and despite being 10 years separated they are both built the same. like the Miniworks waterpump even 30 years from now i can count on being able to get replacement parts. making these heiriloom equipment that can be passed down

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This stove will not disappoint As a canoe trip leader, I have had years of experience using these stoves. I completely stand by them in durability and quality. I love the double valve system and how easily the stove packs up. The heat is strong and adjustable allowing for cooking at various temps. Drawbacks include: loud operating noise and powered by white petroleum fuel NOT pressurized camping fuel cannisters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 20 Years, Zero Problems I got this stove as a gift back in 1998. I've never needed anything else. During most of that span I have been a frequent camper, including multiple months-long bouts of living out of a backpack full-time while traveling. The MSR Dragonfly went everywhere with me, burned every kind of fuel, and performed reliably in every condition, from high altitude melting snow in -20 C to humid tropics to extreme desert heat below sea level. The power output on full puts higher end stoves to shame (powerful enough to melt lead!), and the fully adjustable flame means I can easily turn it down to cook rice or reheat leftovers. Having seen a lot of other people's gear over the years, mine was the one that worked best every time, in every condition, and I have never had a reason to switch. The wind screens seem a bit fiddly but work great, and I just broke the first one last year- after 19 years of folding and unfolding! I have only ever had or needed one fuel bottle, which I store with the pump screwed on. Typically I burn gasoline, but have at various times used whatever I could find: white gas, diesel, charcoal lighter fluid, paint thinner(?), kerosine. It has never leaked, clogged, or caused problems with fuel. The setup is fast and easy- I have literally set this stove up and cooked meals in 20 minutes in a back alley before moving on. Extremely lightweight, carries plenty of fuel, and rarely takes more than one match to light even in lousy conditions. Quite simply, this stove beats every other design I have ever seen. I was very lucky to get it all those many adventures ago!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MSR's Dragonfly - This Is The Stove You Want!!!!!!!! Dependability, low simmer capabilities, light, packable, if these are important in a stove to you - this is the stove you want. If you like gourmet meals - This is the stove you want. I have four MSR stoves, Two of them are dragonfly stoves. My other two stoves are in retirement because once I got my first dragonfly, my cooking capabilities in the field increased tenfold. There is only one thing better than the dragonfly stove And that is two dragonfly stoves, if you have the room.'re talking incredible cuisine options. I didn't realize how important low simmering capabilities were until I got the dragonfly. It heats fast n simmers low, very low. (Darn, it's getting me hungry just writing this review...) Yes it costs more than most and if you want a quiet stove this is not the one to get. But if you can live with those two things - This is the stove you want!!!! This review is written by a consumer without any affiliation with MSR or Cascade Designs, the parent company. Btw, I live in Seattle and I can tell you this: MSR's post sale customer service is second to None. The Dragonfly stove is a five star product from a five star company!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super stable stove for larger pots and pans This stove, with its wide base, is super stable for wider pots (i.e., great when cooking for larger groups). Gives you extra confidence that dinner isn't going to be served with a dirt garnish!
