FEATURES of the Mammut Smart Belay Device

  • Popular belay device for both indoor and sport climbers
  • Dynamically brakes the climber in an accidental fall and locks even at low levels of force exerted by the user
  • In the event of sudden shock, the function corresponds to the reflex movements of the human body
  • Improved geometry of the carabiner opening allows comfortable releasing of the lead climber
  • Suitable for all current HMS carabiners and single ropes from 8.7 to 10.5 mm in diameter
  • Ideal for sports, gym, training/workout, and top rope climbing
*Please note that this is NOT a "hands-off" belay device. The brake-end of the rope must be controlled at all times, and this is merely an "assisted braking device", where the device will function in a way that a portion, not all, of the braking power is done by the device itself. Also, the device is not intended to hold the rope with a 100% positive "stop", as there is some slip built into the device to facilitate a dynamic belay. Sorry to be so mean about it, but this is super serious stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 10/10 Bought this a month ago to use at the red river gorge! Feeds and breaks great! Highly recommend. Very comfortable to hold also. I used it for lead climbing and top rope

Rated 5 out of 5 by from belaying for dummies! Our gym has started to required assisted braking devices for belaying lead climbers, so I bought this as a way cheaper way to meet the requirement instead of a gri-gri. I thought I wouldn't use it all the time, but it's become my go-to belay device. Sooooo easy. It truly is belaying for dummies. There's no way to mess up or pinch your hand. I've got one friend who is definitely 50+ pounds heavier than I am and it totally auto-locks if I'm belaying him, doesn't even budge. The effort to hold a climber in the harness, say they're working on a project for a good while, is minimal. Great tool! (Plus, from the right angle, it looks like an elephant, which is adorable.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly good as a Grigri alternative My "G" 1 belay device was well past the needing replacement. There have been so many new belay devices coming out on the market lately that I wanted to do my research before dropping the money on a "G" 2 or plus. A friend of mine has been using of of these Smarts for a couple of years; so she let me try it out one weekend. Even having owned a "G" for a long time, I had still always done lead belay duties with an ATC. That's what I learned on and was most comfortable with. I never felt like I could quickly feed out effectively with the "G" without cheating the locking mechanism (like I see people doing all of the time at the crag and its TERRIFYING). The Smart feeds quickly and smoothly just like an ATC; but with the added benefit of an assisted locking. It is also easy to lower smoothly after just a short time getting used to it. Very ergonomic: your thumb naturally goes to the handle. Excellent belay device for outdoor use with the "normal" rope thicknesses that are popular now. My only negative point at all is that the climbing gym I go to uses "fat" 10.5 ropes that get fuzzy with all of the use and they get "grippy" when trying to feed through the Smart. I blame that more on the rope than the Smart, though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from like a grigri but lighter and simpler I bought this a month ago and love it. It is well designed using some of the same physics as a grigri without all the weight and complexity. You can't use it for repelling, but it's a great complement to a traditional ATC.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Device for Indoor Climbs Great product for top rope climbers. I wanted something that was different than the normal belay device that also would assist in breaking for top rope climbs. It was a tie between this and a grooved atc because what student has a hundred bucks for the gri gri. So this one was the choice and I wasn't disappointed. Lets say you were being careless and just let go of the rope while belaying, the device is made to stop the rope for you (but don't do this obviously). When giving someone a break on a climb, it requires practically no strength to keep them from lowering like the normal device. It is slightly difficult to figure out how to lower someone, but once you get the hang of it you'll never go back. Only downside is that I can see this being obnoxious lead climbing> it doesn't seem to feed rope extremely easy, and it might have a steeper learning curve than other devices. I HAVE seen people use it efficiently though so take a gamble. Overall best device I've used so for and it's and absolute bargain for the price, considering how many useful features there are .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Easy to Use Very easy to use and adds an extra layer of redundancy for belayers.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice sometimes I got this belay device after having used a friends inside for about a month. On tope rope it works well as long as you set up your carabiner appropriately. Otherwise the rope will cross and lock inside of the device and you're stuck. The assisted locking is nice and effective. THe larger size is better for sport, feeds smoother.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than a grigri Use it for top and leading. In my opinion it's better than a grigri or atc. To feed out slack is fast and easy. It locks up automatically when climber falls, and there's no risk of holding the brake down like a grigri
