It's really just a big straw, with a filter inside. Uncap both ends, putting the bottom end into the source water. Let it soak up for 10 seconds or so, then take sips from the straw end. It'll filter out bacteria and waterborne parasites so you can stay hydrated without getting sick.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great for travel I bought this for multiple trips Burkina Faso. Works just as advertised and it very convenient when bagged/bottled water isn't always available, or if it is available it is very hot and uncomfortable to consume. This allowed me to drink cool water from a spigot and I did not get sick. This will always be in my travel pack!

Do these straws have a "use by" or expiration date on them?

Asked by: leigh78
Thank you for the question! I grabbed one of these Filters from our warehouse and there is no expiration date, or "use by", on the packaging. The only information Lifestraw provides is that it filters up to 1,000 liters. I hope this helps a little!

How much liquid does it hold full? When it is used up, does that mean you have to repurchase the entire unit, or is a straw available to replace it.

Asked by: Ruth
Hiya, thanks for the questions! The LifeStraw can provide you with filtered water wherever you go but it doesn't store water. If you want a water filter that can hold water, try the LifeStraw Go which holds 22 ounces. You can find it here: The LifeStraw Go is essentially a water bottle with a LifeStraw filter. There are specific replacement filters available for this bottle. There are no filter replacements for the straw alone. Hope this helps!

Can you change filter after the maximum use, or just have to buy whole new straw?

Asked by: caitlintay
Sadly, because the filter is flush with the straw once it is used up you will need to buy a new straw.

Can the lifestraw connect to a water bottle inside. If so what kind of water bottle would you need for that to work? I noticed someone who said they were able to hook it up to a water bottle.

Asked by: Wolfie
Hiya Wolfie, thanks for your question! We wouldn't recommend using the LifeStraw for anything besides what it is designed to do. I'm sure there are hacks on the interwebs, but we wouldn't be able to guarantee the effectiveness of the product. If you want a filtering water bottle, take a look at the LifeStraw Go Bottle, Sawyer Personal Water Bottle with Filter or Katadyn MyBottle Purifier Bottle Hope this helps!

How do you know when it is used up??

Asked by: millie
That is a great question! I checked the LifeStraw user manual and it mentions you should "regularly blow air through your LifeStraw after drinking to keep the filter clean and prevent it from clogging." It also mentions that "the flow rate of your LifeStraw will decrease, and then stop pulling water through once it reaches the end of its life. You can increase the lifespan by cleaning the LifeStraw after each use. The great thing is, you can never drink contaminated water from a LifeStraw; when the water stops flowing through it, you know it is time for a new one!" PS - Did you see that video review down there where a guy drinks raw sewage with the straw? That's nuts.
