Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leatherman New Wave Multi-tool Angus MacGyver move over...Leatherman's New Wave Multi-tool is coming through! Leatherman's newest version of the Wave is a winner. As a longtime user of multi-tools, this recent addition was welcomed. In 1991, I was given an Original Leatherman and it has remained attached to my duty rig since that time. So I am well aware of Leatherman's reliability, durability and usefulness. As a gear tester, on occasion I am invited to review products. Thedyrt com offered the opportunity to test Leatherman's New Wave Multi-tool ( and I seized it. The features that I welcome the most, are the locking mechanisms. The blades are razor the positive and secure latching of the liner lock is assuring. On more than one occasion the Original has folded its blade too close for comfort...I'd prefer to keep all my digits attached. The liner locking mechanism is simple and easy to use...engaging automatically upon fully opening the blade and with a push of the finger against the side of the liner lock bar, the blade can be released and folded. The "push button" lock for the tool bits, scissors and can/bottle opener is robust and positive, yet easy to manipulate. I have had competitors "plastic/polymer" locking mechanisms fail, breaking off the handle, so the I appreciate the use of metal. The blades are razor sharp and hold a good edge, the choice of tools attached represent a good balance. I both like and dislike the interchangeable driver bits. I like the diminutive size and ease of flipping from philips head to flat blade...but the idea of additional driver bit and heads...well, I'd end up losing those. That's why I chose a multi-tool to begin with...all in one. However, should I strip out the drivers, replacement will be swift and painless. On that note, I'll mention customer service and a word, excellent. The young lady, at Customer Service, I spoke with was upbeat, friendly and helpful. The 25 year warranty, is pretty generous for tools, though I have not had to utilize said warranty on my Original and trusting the same with the New Wave. In a nutshell, all the tools functioned as designed and I used each one repeatedly during my Spring 50 day camping/hiking adventure. The Leatherman New Wave is now the "new" multi-tool on my kit and backpack, relinquishing the Original to the truck glovebox...where it will still see plenty of use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid multi-tool. The Leatherman wave is a multitool classic. It includes enough tools to get the job done on a daily basis, The pliers are solid, and cut wire pretty impressively. The knife is one of my favorite parts about this particular tool. It has a decent grind and belly, and is more functional than comparable multitool blades. The 4 largest tools lock with a liner lock that seems sturdy enough. The screwdriver included is a socket-driver, and thus provides a measure of interchangeability. The fit and finish on the tool isn't spectacular, but this is solely a practical tool. There's nothing fancy about it. The case/sheath is decent, but there isn't much to be said about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Tool I've had this tool for a number of years and it's always on my hip when I head outdoors. I've used it in the wilds of Canada and made boat repairs on Lake St. Clair. I love the fact you can open a few of the tools (knives/saw) using one hand. It has all the tools you need without being huge. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An effective everyday tool that works day after day I have had the Wave for just over a year now. In the summer I take it to work with me everyday and during the school year I always have it in my book bag. I have taken in on many trips, backpacking adventures, and hikes and it has always come in handy. When on the trails, and something breaks or stops working, the Wave can almost always fix it or rig it so that it will get the job done for the rest of the trip. I have used it for so many things over the past year such as fixing loose screws on my longboard and other places, opening packages, cutting rop, cutting through small branches, and repairing countless objects. It is also very sturdy and durable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Tool to Rule All Tools This is my second wave. The first was gifted to a friend who didn't think a multi-tool was necessary for backpacking trips. He's a convert. I love the blade quality on this thing, the assortment of tools, how tight everything locks in, and the sheath that conveniently loops through the waistband on my pack. I would not take a trip without a multi-tool and this one does the job very well.
