Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid + Lightweight = A badass boot Coming from the LaSportiva Karakorum to the LSTTRKGTXB (referred to as "this boot" going forward) was a welcomed change regarding weight. While the Karakorum's offer a level of "I'm wearing a battle tank on my foot so get out of my way", this boot offers a more subtle confidence, perhaps something like "I'm a nimble hiking ninja and can put my toes in places only an Ibex can appreciate." As noted in other reviews around the interwebs, if you are used to LaSportiva boots prior to this boot, the toe box seems to offer up more room. Something I was able to eliminate with the addition of my special insoles. Time will tell how the synthetic material holds up over the not-so-soft granite they will face in the northeast ranges. It feels like it could be rugged, so I'll add an update to this review in the coming months. ~Sole, Lacing, and Ankle Support: With the ankle flex point in this boot's design, you can accomplish stances that'd make a ballerina do a double take. It offers up an insane level of travel when gesticulating wildly through the forest, while still supporting you like a 5-point racing harness. Lets talk Sole. It's seriously awesome. LaSportiva knew how awesome it is and and added a special section. Appropriately labeling it "The Climbing Zone" (For real, it's labeled on the sole).. It's an incredibly stiff nugget of vibram-goodness placed on the inner side of the toe-zone. It's functional and fun - who could ask for more? Lacing seems to be on point as well. 3 sets of very firm lace hooks make you feel like Sir Edmund Hillary attempting Everest. ~Style and Feel: You won't go unnoticed in these. In fact, Marty McFly is supposedly said to have shown interest (I'm still verifying this). All the wildlife, and other hikers, will stop and stare in awe at the glow these give off. While the red (which I have) is bright, you get used to them rather quickly and don't feel like Ronald McDonald of the Mountains for too long. These feel like your feet are being surrounded by several sleepy giant Flemish rabbits. It's hard to describe how strong & rugged, but supportive these boots feel. I'm a huge fan of LaSportiva boots and these boots certainly live up to the name. **Caution: You might feel like climbing McKinley right out of the box because there is little to no break-in needed, but please exercise caution. ~Summary: According to Internet-Law, every review 'should' end in a Summary and probably list the pro's and con's, so here is my required ending; Pro's: -Very Flexible ankle support -Superb grip, the "Climbing Zone" is an especially thoughtful touch. -Easy to lace tight and keep tight -VERY Lightweight for the performance Con's: -Yet to be determined how the synthetic material will hold up -Wish they had the LaSportiva lace-lock (just being picky) Happy Hiking

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very comfortable from the Beijing. I just used them in very cold weather with very good performance. I recomend them and I expect to use them in the Andes at about 5500 metres

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light weight with great features! Purchased about a month or so ago, I was skeptical because this would be my first pair of La Sportiva’s not made in Italy. They have all of the features I was looking for, great price and incridbly light. I think my biggest surprise was how comfortable they are out of the box. I’d definitely recommend them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light, rugged, and dry! Boots are very light, which is great for long days hiking. The fit for me is perfect. As advertised, they keep your feet dry on wet days. Your feet can get a bit hot with all that protection, but it is a worthwhile trade off. Not a fan of the red color, but you quickly get used to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replaced my full leather La Sportiva Mulaz hikers I've had full leather La Sportiva Mulaz hiking boots for over 7 years now and they've held up amazingly well despite what I've put them through. They're classic in looks, design, and typical awesome quality La Sportiva design (my alpine boots are also LS) Alas even the greatest shoes don't last forever. Enter these all new "Trango TRK GTX" boots. Compared to the Mulaz, these things are MORE comfortable in cushioning and fit. Seem to breath better and are definitely weigh noticeably less. I suppose this is what the future of shoes is... computer designed foams and plastics. If I just wore the boots and didn't look at them I'd say these are without question the future of footwear. Let's talk about why I'm a little apprehensive, though... First of all, La Sportiva's claim to fame for nearly 100 years has been hand-making their products in a company-owned facility in Italy. All my previous LS boots have been made in Italy, as indicated on the tag. These Trango TRK GTX I just bought are made in China. Nothing against China... they can make some decent stuff at times... but I still remain concerned about the long term durability of these boots, since they were not made in the same facility or even the same country by the same group of people as all the other boots that have made LS famous were. Also, the outside of these boots is very 'plasticky', and to be honest it looks kind of tacky. I'm not one to care that much about how I look on the hiking trail, but I do sometimes like to wear my boots around town too, and the old dark brown Mulaz would pass for classy footwear with a pair of nice jeans and day of the week. These stick out like a sore thumb both with their bright red color and with their shiny plastic appearance. I also have a hard time seeing the soft/shiny plastic outside of these boots standing up to all the scrapes and bumps that my tough leather Mulaz did without getting torn up. But again, looks aside, maybe these Chinese-made plasticky boots are MORE durable and even better quality than my Mulaz. I'm not saying they aren't... I'm just saying this is a HUGE departure from anything I've seen from La Sportiva before, so I'll remain skeptical for now. In the mean time, at least they feel great on my feet and should let me hike all that much further, faster and be more comfortable

Do these boots have a full shank like the makalu

Asked by: Dave22
Hiya Dave22, thanks for your question! It does not have a full steel shank like the Makalu boot. It has a lighter compression molded midsole (80% EVA and 20% SBR) that is firm, yet cushioning. Hope this helps!

La Sportiva footwear is built and offered on European half sizes, which are smaller increments than US half sizes. This gives them four extra sizes per size run, and ultimately gives you a better fit.

Please review La Sportiva's size conversion chart above to help determine your ideal size. Below you will find additional information about how to fit and break in the different styles of La Sportiva footwear, which will also help guide you to the correct size.

• As a general rule soft shoes like climbing shoes require a tighter fit, or about two to three sizes smaller than your street shoe size.
• La Sportiva recommends you fit your trad climbing shoes one to two sizes under your street shoe size.
• La Sportiva offers a lot of lasts, and each offers a different fit and feel. Remember to factor in potential stretching.
• Unlined slip-lasted shoes tend to stretch a bit more than lined shoes, or about one full size.
• Lined shoes stretch about a half size.

• PERFORMANCE FIT - offers a high performance fit and a downturned last.
• TECH FIT - a more technical fit and a last with neutral profile.
• COMFORT FIT - a comfortable fit and a last with more volume and a neutral profile.

• Find your US Size in the guide above, then find the Euro Size conversion and add one half size.
• The ideal size holds your toes ever so slightly away from the front of the boot while the lacing system is snug across the top of your arch.
• If you can try to boots on beforehand, make sure you wear the same size and weight socks you would typically wear with the boots, and any orthotics or custom footbeds you use.
• It is ideal to fit boots later in the day since feet are prone to swell slightly as a day progresses.
• Wear your boots indoors only until you are confident about the fit.
• Your foot should feel snug (not tight) from the arch back into the heel pocket with just a minimum lift as you walk. If your heel lifts make sure the lacing is snug and not too loose.
• Your toes should NOT touch the front of the boot, but when you kick the toe into the floor, you should know where the front of the boot is. You want just enough room to wiggle your toes.
• If your toes or sides of your feet feel squished, most likely the width is too narrow and the boot will not work for you.
• If your toes touch the front of the boot, most likely it is too short and you need the next half size up.
• Make sure to keep all original packaging that came with your boots until you are sure that you are happy with your purchase.
