Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great shoe, some manufacturing issues The cushioning and grip have allowed me to increase my downhill speed between 10-15%. Super light weight and better fit than previous models.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from outsole tends to separate from midsole This is my third pair of this model. The rear outside of the outsole tends to separate from the midsole, sometimes within the first few wearings. I've gotten into the habit of super-glueing the outsole back on when this happens. Still my favorite running shoe, in spite of this design flaw.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Outer sole peeling again Rated this shoe previously. The original pair had the heel sole peel after three runs. Hoka's return procedure was easy and painless (I'd rather be running in them than returning them). They were exchanged for an identical pair. After two trail hikes and one run, maybe twenty miles, the sole peeled again in the exact same location as the original pair. I am refunding this pair and not giving them another try. Adhesives today are so good that there is explanation for this. The shoes should be pounded into pieces before the glue gives up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 50k out of the box Wore these straight out of the box on a rugged, rocky 50k with about 5000 feet of gain and have absolutely no complaints. Feet felt great all day, and only one tiny little blister I didn't even notice during the race. I had been wearing a lower quality, zero drop wide toe box brand for years and had become disenchanted with their declining quality and per my wife's recommendation I tried out these shoes, could not be happier.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Different Shoe Than Previous Answering questions like 'feels true to size?' or 'true to width?' is kind of like being in a crazy house of mirrors when it comes to HOKA. Every new iteration of the shoe changes significantly, so I really don't know what sizing is true anymore. I have two pairs of the ATR 4 after running in all previous ATR models. The first two iterations were the best. ATR 3 was a train wreck. #4 is workable, but it is an entirely different shoe in fit, cushioning and stability. If this is your first pair of HOKAs you might are think they are very comfy. Generally speaking, they are. But compared to earlier versions, they aren't as comfortable. We have lost padding around the shoe opening, so lacing then too tightly will cause pain when running. They are stiffer then past models, and the toe box is bigger. I order a half size bigger than what is normal in most of my shoes when buying HOKA. So far they are holding up. I rotate between three pairs of shoes (including a Clifton) and I haven't had delam problems that other people have experienced. I am 80% trail, 20% road. I don't have any other brands in my running shoe inventory, and haven't for 5-ish years. I do recommend them to friends...but I sure wish HOKA would a) quit changing the shoe so drastically each year; and b) quit flooding the market with new models. I think their quality control has suffered meaningfully from year to year. And worse yet, while quality seems to be suspect, price has done nothing but go up!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Shoe! I use this model for trail and road training. It feels very responsive yet still has the cushion I have become accustomed to with Hoka for years. I recently ran a marathon (as a training run) in these with excellent, unexpected, time results. Not my normal race shoe, but sure did the trick on race day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite HOKA so far! Excellent comfort, stability, and durability from roads to technical trails. Only complaint is the outsole. I would love to see this shoe with the vibram mega grip sole..

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bring Back ATR 3. Although last year's ATR 3 had quality problems with the upper splitting across the toebox, and some 2017 lots were made too narrow in the toebox, the two pairs of ATR 3 that I bought in early 2017 served me well for ultras, despite the lugs peeling and upper splitting. In 2018, I am still trying to extend the life of them with duct tape because they work so well for me, and accept orthotics. But the ATR 4 is a completely different shoe. Stiff, hard midsole, excessive arch sculpting, and midfoot too narrow, even without using with an orthotic. They ride like narrow bricks attached to your feet, rigid, poor flexibility and cushioning. Consequently unstable given their high stack height on a narrow platform width. I tried to 'modify' them to add flexibility but to no avail. Can't be fixed. (Speedgoat 2 I also bought this year had the same problems. Teetering on unstable bricks on technical trails doesn't work). Moved then to the Stinson and they are extremely inflexible and can't perform like the ATR 3 on technical trails either. So after several hundred lost $ for three pairs of new 2018 Hokas I can't resell, I am using still using the ATR 3s from last year, applying duct tape. I've exhausted any ATR 3 re-seller availability online. ATR change is similar to the Clifton change from 3 to 4 this year. I liked the Clifton 3, not the 4. Waiting for Hoka to re-launch production of ATR 3 (with the fuller width toebox manufactured in early 2017). But alas, just received and started running in a max cushioned ultra trail shoe from a different brand, the model named after a Greek mountain, and it looks like it will serve me well for ultras up to 100 miles. Until the ATR 3 reincarnation perhaps.
