The Gregory Men's Zulu 40L Pack is a decent sized pack that fits all your short, full featured trips. We're talking summer overnights and winter day hikes. It offers more room than a daypack and still provides the features needed to stay comfortable and carry the gear needed to charge along the trail. CrossFlo suspension is all about the mesh, keeping air flowing behind your back and cushion padding your shoulders and hips. The lid is a permanent fixture for all your smaller knick-knacks and underneath the U-zip opens up to load the main compartment. Secure ice axes or trekking poles to the outside and a piece of pie in your hipbelt pocket and take the paths less traveled. Sorry, did I say pie? I meant an equally tasty pie-flavored granola bar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the arm straps! The Gregory arm straps are shaped so that they curve in toward the midline as they come down from the shoulder. This means they don’t chafe my inner arm when I swing my arms, walking. Better than my former pack! Also, nice practical capacity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable with simple, well designed features Bought this as a day pack with specific intent of winter hiking. The side compression straps are perfect for snowshoes. Great access from top or front. The brain has plenty of room. On the fit and comfort end, this thing is top notch. The shoulder straps and hip belt are light yet we'll padded. Suspended mesh back and lumbar support are what really pushes this over the edge. Can carry a decent load (I've loaded upwards of 30lbs) and feels very light. Overall, I found this pack to be a great buy. Very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect mid-sized Pack I needed a weekend pack, something bigger than my 20 L and smaller than my 75L. The features and comfort of this pack are great, and easily fits anything you could need for a 2-4 day trip. The built in rain fly has come in handy on multiple weekend trips where we've got rain, and the additional outer pockets are great foout he essentials you need regularly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Starter pack Fit is extremely comfortable. Pack weight is evenly distributed to make pack seem lighter. Good pack for people looking to get into short backpacking trips. I love the front load feature on the pack.

Has anyone taken the 40 L as a carry on? Looks like it would squeak on,

Asked by: Roland
Hey Roland! Great question. I would say that the size medium may work as a carry on, depending on how much stuff you have inside, and depending on the airline. Hope that helps a little!

- + Size Guide

Gregory Men's Packs

Gregory backpacking packs are available in a size range. Please check the PRODUCT FEATURES and / or SPECIFICATIONS for the torso range measurements of each size of a pack. The steps below are a guide for measuring your torso size.

The hipbelts on Gregory backpacking packs are adjustable to fit a range of sizes. A simple rule of thumb is that the ideal distance between the ends of the hipbelt pads after tightening should be 3 to 5 inches. However, the most important criteria are that the hipbelt wraps clear over the side of your body and that it rests 1 inch above your iliac crest. This allows proper load transfer to your skeletal structure, which maximizes comfort and minimizes energy expenditure.

1. Put your chin to your chest and feel for the big bone protruding on your neck at the top of your spine. That's the C7 vertebra.

2. Feel your hip bone, the top part of this is your iliac crest. Find the spot on your back that is level with the top of this crest.

3. Have someone measure the distance between these two points, following the contours of your spine.
