Rated 5 out of 5 by from A potentially life-saving device, but buy informed NOTE: If you purchase this device, please be careful to only use the emergency functions in an actual emergency, when you actually need the help of search and rescue authorities. This device has three noteworthy functions. To start with, it's a SEND, a Satellite Emergency Notification Device. When you flip open the safety cap and activate the emergency switch, it goes into emergency mode. It contacts GEOS (the SAR coordination center which inReach devices talk to) via satellite, notifying them that you're in an emergency situation and giving them your location. GEOS then contacts your local SAR authorities to begin the rescue operation. Because this device allows for text communication, something which PLB's like the ACR ResQLink cannot do, you can talk back and forth with GEOS in emergency situations, so they can tailor the emergency response to your circumstances. What this device lacks is the 121.5 MHz local homing beacon found on PLB's, which can be used by SAR to home in on victims using radio signal finding equipment. This is useful when the initial distress signal lacks a proper GPS fix, which occasionally does happen. PLB's also have a much stronger initial signal to reach the satellites above, something which is useful if a beacon is activated in adverse terrain, such as narrow canyons. So PLB's have some advantages over devices like this, if one is looking purely at their emergency beacon functions. However, this device offers additional functionality. This is also a satellite messenger. You can send text messages to either cellular phone numbers or e-mail addresses. This is useful for giving updates to your loved ones. It can also be used to call for help from friends or family without invoking a full-fledged SAR response. This device can also receive satellite messages from people too. This itself is potentially a useful safety feature. Finally, this device has other navigation functions and sensors. This particular model can store topo maps for navigation. Please note that the GPS functions on the device itself are clumsy and not full-featured by today's standards. The onboard GPS functionality is best used as a navigation device of last resort if your paper maps, dedicated GPS navigation device, and/or cellular phone offline navigation apps have all failed. This device also has a compass, altimeter, and can receive weather updates via satellite. This device does have a special setup procedure. Please make sure to set it up and test it before taking this device into the backcountry. The use of this device does require a special subscription. The cheapest plans are economical and provide adequate function. It's also recommended to install the Earthmate app on your phone, as this app links to your inReach device and provides a nicer screen and much better interface with which to use your inReach's functions. I strongly recommend you get the GEOS SAR benefit (you will see this option while setting up your subscription). This defrays a significant chunk of any out of pocket SAR expenses you might incur. While federal SAR is usually free, and most state SAR is also free (this is a more complicated issue than can be briefly described), GEOS will authorize private resources if they believe that's the only way to save your life. Some of these resources (private air ambulances) can be very expensive. In terms of build quality, the device strikes me as rugged and well-built. I wouldn't subject it to extreme conditions, but it's reasonably resistant to being dropped, banged around in a pack, and reasonable water exposure (meaning not prolonged total immersion). By today's standards, the screen is poor, and the UI is clumsy, but it's still quite usable once you get used to it. And there are no devices that replicates all of its functions in a superior way. It remains a best in class option. See the inReach mini if you want similar functionality in a much lighter and smaller form factor, but please note that its battery life has been halved, and it lacks the topo navigation and bright, color display.
