Rated 1 out of 5 by from not even splash proof have had it for over a year. Sporadic use under fair and mild conditions, no complaints there. I bought it for the IPX8 water proof feature and the red light which should come handy when boating at night. Leaving the headlamp on my head while running the boat with expected random splashes of salt water. Didn't think much of it given it is rated IPX8, but upon close inspection, there are no orings or proper seals, in fact there's a gap when locked, since the rubber edge is not able to grab onto anything at the latch. So, bottom line, water does come in. I guess that's where that warning "can mean water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects" comes in handy. Well, it doesn't specify who does not receive harmful effects. Maybe your pet, but the lamp for sure suffers after saltwater enters the battery compartment....go figure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really bright So far really pleased with how bright this headlamp is, and also the amount of dimmable range it has. Cycling through the features is a bit confusing, but the more I'm using it the easier it is becoming. One issue is the off white (yellow) dot in the center of the area that you are looking towards. Getting more accustom to this as I use it more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So easy a hiker can do it!! I bought this long trail days and setting up camp. The lockout feature is perfect so I don’t kill the batteries when it’s not in use.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Can't flip batteries As any experienced outdoor enthusiast knows, the locking mechanisms on headlamps are not backpack proof. For decades people have resorted to inverting a battery until the headlamp needs to be used as this is the only real way to lock a headlamp. Unfortunately in the new model of the Spot headlamp when you invert a battery the positive terminus depresses the metal piece on the negative receptor into a spot where it gets caught. When the battery is reverted to its normal orientation there is no longer contact at the negative terminus and the headlamp will not work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Irregular yellow spot in the center The irregular yellowish and darker appearing area in the center of the beam is distracting. People usually try to point the beam directly where they want to see most clearly. With this lamp I see details better when pointed slightly to the side. For me this is very annoying and makes an otherwise good headlamp almost unusable. Numerous others have complained about the same issue. The manufacturer's explanations and excuses in response to similar comments below are completely unconvincing. If they think a more yellow light is better, they should make it homogeneous yellow or put the more white area that appears brighter in the center and not the other way around!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not waterproof. Not working after three uses. Used 3 times to run. On top of a headband. It gut rusty and it doesn't work anymore. Huge disappointment.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too complicated! I enjoy the 300 lumen light....when I can get to it. It would be a great asset to my early morning bicycle rides, if I could make it work properly. You put too many features into a simple devise. To get what I want I must press and hold for x number of seconds, squeeze here, press twice here, hold up over my head for 10 seconds, ........ Like I said, it's too complicated. And then, if I accidentally hit the wrong button, I have to stop my ride and attempt to fix it. I fiddled with it for so long this morning, the sun came up. So I stuffed it into my pocket and rode home in dawns early light and searched out the 12" x 18" instruction sheet, written in 23 different languages, to figure out how to get back to the 300 lumen light. Lets see, press here, hold here for 3 seconds, squeeze here........ Also, please explain the questions below "What is your level of expertise?" Expertise in what? I have a degree in Biomedical Electronics. I've walked around in the dark alot. I have other simpler headlamps that I may go back to using.

Approximately how long is the battery life of the Diamond Light on high and lower settings? My son & I are going in the backcountry of Denali in Alaska. We need something that will not eat up battery power using a 'normal' light setting.

Asked by: Redsy
Hey, Redsy - way to go with those adventures!! Black Diamond doesn't necessarily provide an equivalent for "normal", but they state High only gives you about 25 hours and low setting gives approximately 180 hours. You could probably put "normal" somewhere at least at 100 hours. I used my own spot over a 3 month thru-hike and did not change the batteries once. I would primarily use it for an hour in the morning and in the tent at night for approximately 2. Hpe that gives you a good idea of what you will get out of it!!

How do you get the red light on?

Asked by: DEDe
Thanks for the question! Holding down the top mode button for two seconds will turn the red light on. I included the instruction manual below. Hope this helps! https://blackdiamondequipment.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-bdel/default/dwf07cb207/instructions/F16/MM5923_N_Spot_IS-WEB.pdf
