The Black Diamond Mission 55 Pack is a gear hauler for getting everything to the base. Tough fabrics hold up in cold weather and the weight is balanced properly on your back with the help of a reACTIV hipbelt and SwingArm shoulder straps. Strip it down if you're looking to trim things down, go from hipbelt to webbing belt, ditch the framesheet and even the top lid. PickPockets#&8482; protect gear from ice tools and a crampon pouch does the same.

Products on Sale are Discontinued Styles or Colors.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good Features, Horrible Durability I am a glacier and ice climbing guide and purchased this pack in January 2018 for my winter pursuits here in Southeast Alaska. It had all the features I was hoping for, reinforced crampon carrier, ice tool sheath, simple/streamlined construction. For my jaunts this winter it was a solid pack that did everything nicely. That all being said - once the summer guiding ramped up to a daily basis, and I started to put this pack to solid, consistant use, it failed miserably. I almost lost my mountaineering axe on a day trip because the velcro BD tool/axe holder completely disappeared on the trail - it just ripped off and slid off the end of my axe. Next, one of the straps on the shoulder strap ripped as well just by having the weight of a hand held marine radio attached to it. These small things are minimal compared to the fact that BOTH shoulder straps were ripping off from the pack itself with constant, daily use. By the end of it's life, I had carabiner'd and prussik'd the strap to the pack to keep it attached. Being an avid BD user and fan, I was very, very disappointed in the durability of this pack. I had recommended it to my friends and fellow guides this winter with all the features I mentioned above that I liked, but I have since rescinded my recommendations after the pack did not hold it's own on a daily basis this summer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for ice climbing! I bought the Mission 50 (older model) two winters ago. Saw it in a store all decked out with rope and ice tools and crampons and that BD logo and that royal blue color, LOL, had to get me one! I haven't been disappointed, and will order the newer Mission 55 soon in hopes the 55 M/L is a little taller in the torso than my 50 M. (I'm 6'1, mostly in my legs, 195 lbs.) Outstanding features: Crampon pouch, tool pockets and straps, tuck-away rope strap, front AND rear haul straps (very handy!), comfortable suspension, roomy lid compartment that easily adjusts to low or high main compartment packing, easy open drawstrings, side (rope) straps. Fair: Difficult to bend my wrists enough to grab and tighten the shoulder straps (remedied with loops made out of 3mm cord), still trying to use the side zipper, and buckles are sometimes hard to squeeze and release (I'll work on grip exercises).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Solidly built but carries poorly Pros: -Tough materials -Solid construction -Stripable Cons: -Torso height unadjustable -Carries 30# test load poorly -Pack pulls back and down under test load, placing majority of weight on shoulder straps

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent mid-sized technical pack I was skeptical when i first bought it, i urgently needed a pack for a particular expedition in the states, but had left my packs at home in Australia. Being ex-military i was used to a different type of pack - my go-to was burly and 150L in capacity. But this pack has since got me through a solo 7 day trek out in the Yosemite wilderness and has replaced my pack for day-long technical ski touring trips. It has held up to fair bit of abuse, expect for a broken chest buckle (from overloading), which was a problem easily remedied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Alpine Approach Pack I've Owned! Perfect size bag to use as an alpine approach pack if you're going to be spending multiple days in the mountains. Incredibly comfortable, very functional and well worth the price. Just like the Creek 50, the side zip is invaluable on this pack. If you're in the market for a new bag look no further, this is it!
