Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Breathable, durable and This shell is perfect for missions where the weather is dry and the turns will be many. Like the description says, Dawn Patrol Shell is for high-output missions. I personally wouldn't use this for any outing where the weather will be questionably wet. This is my go-to sunny day shell for ski tours, mountaineering and cold dry hikes. Highly Recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like everything about this shell I bought it last month & have worn it numerous times. I like the feel (hand?) of the exterior & interior material. I especially like the warmth of the interior fabric. It has performed well on the chilly (April) days & nights we’ve had here in upstate NY & has shed water in a light drizzle (I understand it’s not a rainshell). I’m anxious to see how it performs when my wife & I are in the Canadian Rockies this summer. I look forward to wearing while I Patrol next winter @ Windham Mountain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Iceland, ice climbing, 14ers, and more Purchased this jacket in September to have a soft shell counter part to my Arc'teryx hard shell. After exhaustive research, I decided that the Dawn Patrol was the right thickness to use as a winter shell for sub-freezing conditions to sub zero conditions due to not trusting DWR in a truly "wet" environment above freezing temps. UTILITY: Incredible happy with the Dawn Patrol, it blocked 65 mph wind gusts in Iceland, spindrift on 14ers, vented well ice climbing and climbing a couple 14ers in 30 degree F temps fully zipped (and it kept ice shrapnel out of my collar,) it fits well over two lighter puffies and a half zip for layering, durability has proven great on a couple rock climbing outings. Definitely blocks the elements (haven't worn in a rain downpour yet, but DWR prevented ice-melt seepage.) It doesn't retain any heat of its own (no brushed fleece interior,) which is great in my mind because it allows a larger dynamic for layering. FIT: I'm 6 foot, 210 lbs, muscular but not lean. Sleeves and hem are long enough that they don't ride up under your harness and stay down while snowboarding/ skiing, keeping the elements off your midriff. Cuffs are slim and sensible and fit well under glove gauntlets. Hood easily fits over any standard rock climbing helmet, with room for some lower profile ski/board helmets. Hood is adjustable to not block field of vision. Finally it looks good and fits right to wear with street clothes in business casual (at least until it gets dilapidated from the heavy adventure use mine sees.) Somehow its got a trim fit that also allows layering good enough for lower 48 summits. High recommend, highly satisfied, all around excellent modern soft-shell.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First generation I purchased this jacket retail, at the end of the ski season a few years ago... the upsides... the jacket is completely bombproof... I’ve got at least 50 ski days in it, resort and BC. I’ve also used it around town. The black color has never faded... cold temps and snow, wind, freezing rain, you stay dry... light rain, still dry... heavy rain, as long as the hybrid panels don’t wet out, still pretty dry... downside... I ski’d during last March, it was really foggy, light rain, lifts were wet... like 100% humidity, and in those conditions, the hybrid panels seem to equalize the moisture inside the jacket with the environment... I got soaked... The jacket does so many things well... additionally I’m 5’9”, and weigh 180... a large fits well with room to layer

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing coat for ski touring - sizing not so great I just bought this coat and spent the last seven days touring in it everyday. It truly does have great ventilation and the lack of pit zips was not an issue at all as the lighter material that BD put there worked well. The internal pockets on the front were excellent for stashing my skins when I didn't want to put them in my backpack. However, the sizing is not right. I am a L to XL kinda guy - 6 feet tall, 200 lbs - and found the L size of this coat way too baggy and big. This is unheard of for me as I find I usually have to buy XL sizing to fit my big shoulders and long arms. I tried on a L that a friend had and it did fit well. So my tip would be to size down one full size. The cut is definitely not a an athletic type cup, very roomy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Touring Layer Great touring layer. I wear this over a base layer on the way up. Keeps wind at bay, but allows heat to escape so that I don’t sweat. If warm can wear down also, but usually put another layer on top for going down.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from too tight I've had a size-large Dawn Patrol for about two ski seasons. I'm 5'8" and 180 pounds (yes, a little heavy). When I add layers for cold day, it's too tight, especially the arms. And I have about average diameter arms. Though BD is excellent, I hope it's not trying to be more fashionable, less functional.
