Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this chair I've carried this chair maybe 40 miles so far on various weekend backpacking trips and I've never regretted the weight. It's super fast to set up, and it's incredibly comfortable for everything from filtering water and cooking dinner to relaxing by a fire or with a book by a river. It really isn't hard to balance in at all if you're remotely coordinated. I also have a small foam sit pad, and I love it for what it is, but the luxury of an actual chair (and the knee soothing qualities of sitting in an actual chair after hiking all day) are just so much better. Yes, it's heavier than a tiny square of foam you could sit on instead. Yes, it's definitely worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from better than sitting on a wet log I bought this a couple weeks ago and haven't had a chance to camp with it, but I sat in a friend's on a trip last year and found it to be well-made, comfortable and stable despite having only half the number of legs one typically expects with a chair. It's small and light for its class due to the clever design, and it appears to be well-made. After fiddling with it at home, I can confirm it's quick and easy to assemble and break down, as well. I was perfectly happy to use my friend's chair a couple times on that trip last year because he's the one who had to pack it in and out. That gets me to the main drawback of a product like this: while small and light for it's class, it's still well over a pound and as bulky as an air-filled sleeping mattress. I look forward to using it on an upcoming weekender, but I don't look forward to finding a spot for it in, or on, my pack. After I played around with this one in the backyard to ensure it was well-built and to reassure myself that it was a nice place to recline with a book, I bought another for my son. I figured that if I carried this one into camp, he'd be the first person to plant his hindquarters in it once I got it assembled. I'd either have to find a wet log or resign myself to constantly tickling him out of the chair, which has its appeal but ultimately would have risked destroying the product. So now I have to figure out how to get his onto his pack, too. It is a luxury item, for sure -- the kind of thing you bring when you'll be hanging in camp more than backpacking, like on weekend trips with lots of young kids. For week-long excursions into the back country, a wet log and a piece of closed-cell foam will do just fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So great I bought another one in blue! I purchased one of these so I could bring it backpacking. The chair is fantastic and, yes you have to balance on it, but it's really comfy if you have any sense of balance. If you like having a few drinks with friends around the fire, getting out of the chair and back in can be a game :-) It's my go-to chair for car camping or backpacking now. When we had to make a decision on which chair to buy for a 2nd one, we chose this one again because the Mayfly, while it's nice to have the stability, doesn't allow a great level of rocking. This chair is amazing if you enjoy rocking at all. This chair sits low to the ground, which some may not like and takes a little getting used to. But it makes it easy to grab your beverage from the ground. Setup and breakdown is so easy that anyone can do it. The instructions printed on the product along with the pole color coding make it foolproof. Get one and enjoy balancing and rocking comfort at its finest!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camping/Backpacking Chair My boys are in Scouts. My older son asked for one of these chairs for Christmas last year. my younger son didn't think he wanted one at the time. He has loved using it so much whilE on Boy Scouts camp outs that he is asking for one this year. It's a great light weight chair for them to lounge around the camp fire without sitting on the ground or disrupting the natural surroundings...(aka dragging logs to sit on). We highly recommend this chair & the sale price at MJ makes it all the better!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Better than sitting on the ground Pros: Slightly better than sitting on the ground. Lightweight and small, so very easy to pack. Cons: There are only two legs. You have to constantly support yourself to stay balanced, making it difficult to just sit back and relax after a long day of hiking. As mentioned in other reviews, the chair needs to be on a very flat surface or it will topple over (with you in it).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from useless. only has two legs. You have to balance like a magician on this thing. Don't buy if you like to drink at camp.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Alite Monarch is unexpectedly comfortable with its deep seat position and provides welcome rest after long days on the trail. It also is more practical than it appears as you can shift your weight farther back so it is more of a stool allowing for essential activities like lighting stoves and eating without getting noodles on your snap to be performed. Compared to conventional folding chairs, it is obviously lighter and more packable but still can be used at block parties and soccer games. However, when it comes to the backcountry, it is rather heavy. Personally, I find the difference negligible when ,for example, bike packing and believe the product is worth the weight on slower paced overnighters when significant time around the campfire is expected though cannot justify it on high mileage multiday backpacking trips where the priority is a quick meal and then sleep. Overall, the chair is well constructed, quick to set up and stable enough to be used on most surfaces with a little balance.
