Product Description Item No.   10185140

The Osprey Kestrel 48 Pack is a versatile pack for backpacking and hiking in a lightweight package. The 48 is just enough space for a multi-day or overnight adventure. The two sizes (S/M or M/L) are each available with an adjustable harness, fitting a wide range of torsos, so you can even lend this puppy out to a friend. No, lend the pack to a friend, not your sweet little puppy. The AirScape backpanel is made of a ridged foam that is supportive, comfy and cool against your back with a slotted hipbelt for support. The Kestrel has been loaded with features, my favorites being the integrated raincover and the Stow-On-The-Go™ trekking pole attachments. You never know when the rain will fall or when you need to go hands-free to climb over a fallen tree.

Osprey Airscape

Osprey Airscape
Osprey's AirScape™ mesh covered ridge foam backpanels set a new standard in the industry. With its ability to keep the weight close, provide cushion, allow ventilation and add load carry is quite a list of needs from this unassuming backpanel. It successfully accomplished all of that in a way that allows it to be used in the large gear hauling packs and lightweight day hiking packs.

Osprey High Road Chassis

Osprey High Road Chassis
All Osprey wheeled travel packs utilize Osprey’s proprietary High Road™ Chassis featuring an ergonomic retractable handle with integrated vent fins, a 6001 Aluminum frame, ultra-durable and light-weight composite base with a fiberglass matrix inlay and integrated foot/grab handle, over-sized high traction polyurethane wheels with sealed bearings and a high clearance design.

Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect size and fit I think the most important thing with a pack is that it fit you correctly. Everyone is a different shape. With that said, if that pack fits you correct then get ready. I have had this guy for 5 years now and have taken it everywhere from backpacking, climbing, to traveling through central america. I consider this to be the perfect size backpack. For light multi-day backpacking theres nothing better. For me its honestly all about the fit. I am comfortable hauling around any size load. For traveling it was awesome because there were many pockets that were easy to get to but at the same time it was easy to throw on top of a van or bus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I can't rate this pack highly enough Living in Missouri, my options are somewhat limited for multi-day hiking excursions. I find that this pack is the perfect size for 2-night/3-day hikes. I normally go out with an ultralight 1-person tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, water, food, stove, and other miscellaneous items, and this pack seems to be the perfect size without being too bulky or heavy. Osprey really seems to have thought out every aspect and constructed an extremely high-quality pack here, from the built-in whistle, to the built-in rain cover.,,I tried on quite a few other packs, but this was by far the most comfortable (on my body at least) in its price range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great manufacturer! Wonderful product I bought an Osprey Kestrel a couple of years ago. What a wonderful product. Sometimes you buy something and it is SO good that you put the extra money into it. The ratio of organized compartments to large spaces is perfect and it is extremely light weight. I bought it for hiking the Appalachian Trail, but I also now find that I am using it for traveling on the train and visiting folks, it is so light weight, convenient and practical. So I have a hiking backpack and a piece of luggage all in one! And despite hiking, camping, getting soaked, throwing it on airplanes, etc., it has held up extremely well and still looks great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good service from a good pack I bought this pack in Denver more than 10 years ago, after going through 4 big outdoors shops looking for the right bag. Not so big that I want to carry too much, and not so small that I cant carry enough. Since then it has traveled all over the US, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, Bulgaria and Turkey. On the big trips it carried an average of 35 pounds. Some of these were backpacking trips, and some just travel with a backpack, but it does either job well and is very comfortable once I get it strapped in place.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect Weekend Pack I bought this pack a few weeks ago to take on some overnight/weekend trips. I must say, the quality and feel of the bag are great (like anybody would expect from Osprey). The 48 liter is just the perfect size to hold my down sleeping bag, trail scout sleeping pad, dash 2 UL tent, 2.5 L bladder along with my small cookset and some mountain house meals. If felt light on my back and never felt top-heavy. The only complaint I have is that the waist belt really rubbed my right-side hip raw and I tried loosening/tightening it in different scenarios to the same result. Other than that small bit of discomfort, the pack is great for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack I recently purchased this item and all I can say is that I am impressed! It superbly combines functionality and comfort. My sleeping pad fits perfectly in the straps, and the bottom compartment is great for my sleeping bag. All the packs I've owned previously have had one pocket up top so it's nice to have to two zippered pockets...nice having smaller items stored in the upper one. I have not maxed this bag out, but I have noticed that it can maintain a wide shape due to the side straps and side zippered pockets. Not an issue though and I am sure it can be adjusted when packing. Awesome all around bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Extended Weekend Pack I have had this pack for 4 years now, and I have never even considered buying another pack. It's lightweight, has plenty of room for a 4-5 day trip, and has so many great features! The hip-belt pockets are fantastic for snacks, maps, or cameras, and the stow-and-go pole loops are fantastic. It has plenty of pockets to separate different types of gear. One of the best features, too, is that it comes with a rain fly so you don't have to purchase a separate one. Also, it comes with Osprey's amazing warranty, which came in handy for me this year. One of the clips broke on my hip-belt, and Osprey sent me a replacement no questions asked. I love this pack and would recommend it to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Complete package, trustworthy Rainguard and trekpole loops are there when you need them. Perfect for an overnight hike, or stuff the heck out of it and you can do a 5 day summer trip. I've overpacked many times and it shows no wear, the zips and materials take abuse. If packed modestly I feel comfortable MTB with it, not too cumbersome. Side pockets and bottom opening are a must, belt pockets are a convenience. The top organizational pockets you will find handy, but unusable if you over-stuff the main compartment. A downside is that the hydration bladder needs to be put in before packing otherwise you cannot get it in. Can't get my sleeping pad rolled tight enough for the bottom straps, but easily be affixed otherwise.

This pack looks like it would be acceptable as a carry on item. Has anyone used this pack as carry on any flights and has it passed airline and TSA regs?

Asked by: trxclint
Hey there, Thanks for reaching out to us! I actually have this pack, and I have used it as my carry-on several times. I have never had any issues because 1) the bag is malleable, and thus, can be moved to fit smaller spaces and 2) I've never filled this all the way to brim. The dimensions are 28 x 13 x 13 in. And, for example, 22 x 14 x 9 is the Delta airline regulation, which is the airline I flew. Essentially, as long as the bag isn't bursting the seams, you should be fine. Hope this helped you out!

I measured my torso at 20.5 the first time and then 19 the second time, when I went from the top of the iliac crest. I have long legs and a short torso. Do I want a Small/Medium or Medium/Large in this pack?

Asked by: Amber
Hey Amber according to the size guide for the Osprey Kestral 48. You should likely purchase the pack in S/M size. Any color you choose is going to look great on you. Besides that its going to carry all of your stuff comfortably attached to your back.

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
