The MSR XGK EX is an expedition-proven stove that's trusted by mountaineers for reliable performance in extreme conditions. When you're far above the treeline and away from any rivers or streams, you'll be grateful for the uncompromising performance as you melt snow at high altitude. It is capable of boiling 1 liter of water in under 3 minutes, and maintains itself with the Shaker Jet™ which cleans as you hike (it has a little needle which bobs around as you move, cleaning the fuel jet). Featuring a flexible fuel line, you can stow this stove into a 1.5-liter pot. These qualities have made this stove a backcountry staple for over 35 years and, unless they finally come out with a stove-app, is sure to be around for at least 35 more.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from We will see I go into really cold areas once or twice a year for a week or so in Alaska or Canada and basically just get away by myself and camp. I take a Seva123 stove which has served me well for many years, but decided to get a new stove to try out. I like the increased amount of fuel and the stove is quite stable. It is actually a little harder/dangerous to light than the Seva123, as I just use fire ribbon with it and it is not pressurized. All said I will see how the plastic holds up in the cold, that's my main concern. I cannot understand why MSR went with a plastic pump. As it needs a fuel bottle to operate, one should be included. Also I do not think there is a cook set that is stove specific.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Much improved Really like the new style (foldable legs, flexible fuel line) which is way more compact than the old version and seems a bit lighter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from XGK - No nonsense Freight train My first experience with an XGK was in 1995, climbing with my brother in the Tetons. Coming down after completing Serendipity Arete on Mt Owen we had to bivy up high, and we weren't planning for this. We ended up biving on a nice ledge on the decent route, and chipped ice from cracks for water. The first thing to understand is the energy it takes to melt ice quickly and efficiently. We had an MSR XGK stove along with an MSR heat exchanger, and it was awesome. We brewed tea and made hot gatorade ( which is actually really good). I'm 46 now, and won't use anything but an MSR stove. No questions asked. Hope this helps with your decision.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Workhorse of arctic expedition kitchens. Bought this 7years ago, still rocks fine. Used it several weeks in Finland, Sweden, Svalbard, and Greenland. Burns nearly anything. Only bad is the noise, but you will get used to it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Stove I can not find any boil test on this stove bringing ice or snow to a boil. I mean you would not take this stove on a summer backpacking trip, I would bring my msr reator. But for winter the xgk is my stove of choice. I hope my test helps you figure how much fuel to bring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is as amazing as it is loud I received this as a gift and it is amazing. I have only used it with white gas so far, but I will use it with more fuels soon. It has no functional draw backs. It is loud but this isn't an electric range, so it's supposed to make some noise. The serrated legs are an overlooked feature that puts it above the dragonfly model. My buddy has a dragonfly and you must watch for pots to slide off the smooth legs. This doesn't happen with this pot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable I bought my first XGK in the early 1980's for spring mountaineering in the Alps. But I soon learned to use it for every trip. Loss resulted in a new XGKII around 1994 which has nourished me everywhere from sub-tropical jungle to wintering on the slopes of 4000m peaks. I never could master the simmering, it does take patience, but my wife always turns out a great gourmet meal, no matter our location or how many nights on the trail. But MSR make such a great range of apparently reliable stoves now, that it might not be my first choice for general backpacking/trekking today. But if you want something that seems to be built like a tank, that seems to burn anything, that you can service half way up a mountain, that never lets you down when you need that hot drink or meal. And all of those things are more important to you than cooking on something that works like your kitchen stove, then this is the stove to use. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best liquid stove ever A the beginning it was hard to understand how to make this stove to work, but once you got it right, you can see yourself as a master- just like riding a bike. at the same breath, this stove its not ideal for day trips, ist bulky, stinky and heavy. to complete the picture you need to buy a compact small canister stove like the "Pocketrocket"
