The MSR WhisperLite Stove has been a staple in the industry for over 25 years. 25 years is a lot of years. That's like 175 years in dog years. That's an old dog. Simplicity and reliability, that's how you survive in the industry for that long. The first stove I ever used was a WhisperLite and it was a breeze right out of the box. It runs on white gas, which is the cleanest burning type of fuel and it is self-cleaning with a simple shake. Comes with the fuel pump, windscreen and heat reflector.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 25+ years and still going Bought this in 1991. Used in the West, in the East, and on the Plains. Just checked it for a backcountry trip in Yellowstone coming up. Still going strong. Yes, have had to replace seals and filters, but that's about all. It just never fails. Prefer it to prepackaged fuel stoves as I can choose the size of my fuel bottle. It is the ultimate in flexibility and it never let's you down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Stove For Every Season The MSR WhisperLite is a backcountry powerhouse! It is one of the best stoves I've ever used. I work in outdoor ed, and I find these stoves, which are small, light, and durable, to be an excellent tool for teaching wilderness cooking. They are extremely sturdy, and are unlikely to tip-unlike the majority of canister stoves on the market today-making them a safe choice for beginners. They are easy to use, and fairly intuitive, which is beneficial when working with students. While they don't have the sophisticated temperature control of the Dragonfly stoves, the WhisperLite can be coaxed into a simmer. Most importantly, the WhisperLite is incredibly easy to repair and maintain, both in and out of the field. The ability to disassemble the stove completely for cleaning is invaluable. Additionally, the WhisperLite does not require any particular specialty tools to maintain. For field repairs, a multitool is usually sufficient, but the inexpensive MSR service kit contains everything one needs to keep the stove cooking. On the other hand, the common failure for WhisperLites is in the o-rings-on the fuel bottle or on the fuel pump. To get more o-rings, one is obligated to buy another service kit, or contact MSR directly to buy bulk o-rings. The MSR crew is quick, friendly, and responsive, but it would be nice to be able to purchase bulk o-rings on the website. While the WhisperLite does perform fantastically in cold weather, continual use in desert environments causes the plastic of the fuel pump and the rubber of the o-rings to become brittle. This leads to the final death of the fuel pump, due to cracked plastic or melting. The only solution is to buy a new fuel pump. As a logistics coordinator for an outdoor education company, I find the WhisperLite to be an affordable and efficient solution to feeding students in the backcountry. It is safe, compact, and fuel efficient, and I recommend it to anyone looking to buy a quality backpacking stove.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Old favorite This is the true old standby. Been around for years and always works. You do have to do your basic maintenance every once and a while, but it works every time. Great for the person just starting out in backpacking, especially with a group.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 22 years on and still cooking For years I used canister stoves, dating back to Camping Gaz, back in the late 70's. I received from a friend my WhisperLite as a wedding present back in 1994 and was pleased to discover the cold-weather advantages to a white gas system. I have not purchased a stove since- this reliable workhorse has joined me on every backpacking, skiing, and mountaineering trip to date. The WhisperLite has served meals on trails all over the North West, with temperatures as low as -20 degrees and elevations as high as 12,000 ft. It has provided meals for my sons when they went on their first camping trip, first backpacking trip, and now it warms our meals on on ski camps in the Idaho backcountry. All parts are original and like their owner they do show wear, but the performance of the stove has not diminished. It requires periodic maintenance, but it is so easy to clean and to re-assemble. I have no other item in my gear box that has lasted as long and performed as well as the WhisperLite. Still happily married and still using the same stove. 22 years of performance is reason enough to buy MSR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great All-Around Stove! I bought this product at the end of summer 2016 at REI. Being from Texas, I am a fan of winter camping; however, my propane stove was difficult to use during cold weather (yes, contrary to popular belief, it can get below freezing here). This product was the perfect solution and offered my with another method to heat water/food. I have been fortunate enough to use the WhisperLite during some cold nights this year and it has worked without issue. I am very glad I got this stove!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from never fails! I have had my MSR Wisperlite for over 25 years. It was one of the first pieces of equipment I every got for solo camping. I loved the light weight, small size and great fuel efficiency. The simplistic design makes it incredibly easy to do any field maintenance and cleaning, even in extreme cold weather. In 1998-2000 I lived in the Canadian Arctic, in a town call Pond Inlet, working as an adventure guide. At the time, there was another stove the locals used and relied on. When they saw my little wire stove they were laughing saying it would never melt ice. Well, the shock on their faces when we went from a pot of ice to boiling water before they could even get their stoves warmed up was priceless. Since then, I have worked as a canoe guide through out Ontario, BC, Yukon and while not guiding I lived and did a lot of trips in the Northwest Territories. Always, my trusted Wisperlite in my bag. Over 25 years after getting this stove, I still have all the original parts on it. This last weekend I was guiding a short trip in Algonquin Park Ontario. The temperature was just above freezing, but the winds where blowing about 60 km/ hour. The Wisperlite fired up with no problems, despite being in storage for the last 5 years. Although, there is not a real simmer control, once you get to know your stove, you can manipulate the pressure to create a lower temperature burn. It take a bit of practice, but that just means you get to get out more and use it! I have used in in conjunction with my outback oven to back a birthday cake for my son, roasted chicken breasts on the French River Ontario, bacon in the Canadian Arctic and tea on the side of Mount Logan in the Yukon. The stove is a work of art. Rain, snow, sleet, hail, high winds, ice, high altitude or sea level, no matter the weather or location, this stove keeps on burning!
