Product Description Item No.   10093333

The Black Diamond Couloir Harness is a packable harness for the alpinist and ski mountaineer. This eight ounce harness is so packable, it not only fits in your jacket pocket, but it even comes with it's own little stuff sack. Made for the ice and alpine, the nylon-webbing dries quickly and is low profile so you can throw it on under a pack or pile layers of clothing on underneath. The traditional buckle secures the waist tight and quick releases at the leg loops make for easy entry and exit, regardless of what is strapped to your feet (think crampons, people). Rack up on the two webbing gear loops and four Ice Clipper slots and tackle that mountain.

FEATURES of the Black Diamond Couloir Harness

  • Fast-drying nylon-webbing construction with traditional buckle
  • Quick-release leg loops for easy on/off, even while wearing skis or crampons
  • 2 webbing gear loops and 4 Ice Clipper slots
  • Low-profile and flat enough to be worn comfortably under a pack or clothing
  • Packs down into a stuff sack small enough to fit into a jacket pocket
  • 12 kN-rated belay and haul loops

Rated 3 out of 5 by from need a few tweaks In practice this sort of harness doesn't really get "used" that much... It's mostly along for the ride on ski mountaineering trips for the just in case crevasse fall or short exposed roped ridge or gully step kicking. So it's main features should be that is light, compact and EASY to put on in winter conditions. I give it good marks for being light and compact, but it is a bear to thread and double back even without gloves on. The less experienced folks I was leading couldn't manage it at all, and forget it once the harness gets damp or icy. A larger easier to manage buckle would not add that much weight or bulk and would go a long way to faster, easier and less finger numbing transitions on a tour. Until the buckle is made more winter-user friendly I would not recommend this harness.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great harness but terrible buckle. I was looking for a light weigth ski touring harness so I got this one because it seemed to fit the bill. I have used it three times this fall. Twice ski touring up 4000 meter peaks, Allaninhorn and Breithorn, and travelling on glacier up Sommet les Diableret. The harness is great and perfect over shell pants and bibs. But the buckle is so hard to thread. Way too small and the double buckle style is terrible when your hands are cold. Also as I ski tour I am always changing layers and it is impossible to adjust without bare hands and even then it is a fight. I won't use it any more because it is such a pain.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Better choices exist Very light and adjustable, true. But to put on while wearing skis (one of the reasons one would buy this harness) requires threading the double-back buckle, which is barely possible with bare hands, and impossible with gloves. Furthermore, the gear loops are so small and tight to the harness as to be unusable, again especially with gloves (and this is supposed to be a harness designed for winter use!).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best harness for mountaineering (only) I bought this harness for mountaineering trips (only), is perfect very lightweight and good fit. For people who complain about difficulty peeing with the harness on is not true, the buckle on ether leg can be open very easy and the harness will shift almost by itself giving you the comfort for your necessities. Is correct if the buckle will be just slightly bigger this harness will be 5 stars. However since you adjust this only once on the beginning of your climbing ok may be twice I do not se such a big of a deal. I recommend this harnesses for mountaineering. The product is not designed for rock climbing or to spend significant amount of time on harness, is that's what you want go buy Petzel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works OK, needs fine tuning I bought this immediately when it became available. The harness is very light, packs small and is a great companion on ski touring trips or for lighter mountaineering including shorter scrambles. The comfort is appropriate for this class of product (read "low but OK". Two downsides, though. The main belt is terribly difficult to pull through the buckle. Safety-wise this may sound like a good thing but tying the belt is uncomfortable, messy, requires both hands and a bit of acrobatics, too. Maybe when the belt and the buckle are older this will get better. The obvious omission is the size of the ice screws slots on the legloops. A standard Black Diamond screw - yes, your own - will not go through with the cap on, the loop is too small. Of course, when you ice climb, you remove the caps before racking up but this is no ice climbing harness, it's a touring harness. Everybody I know carries their screws WITH the caps when they ski-tour or cross glaciers and so on because you plan on NOT using the screws in the first place and there is no point in destroying your precious shells with the sharp end of the screw. How this was missed during the design phase I can't understand. Something to fix in the next generation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the best lightest harness perfect for mountaineering This is the best harness I've owned. It is light, compact and it does the job. I climbed Rainier and it didn't add any extra wight. I was able to carry it in my pocket until I needed it. No other harness which is so light and compact has buckles which allow you to put it with mountaineering shoes and crampons without having to take them off. Moosejaw was the only company that had this harness in stock. I had been looking for it for months and no stores or online retailers had it. This is how I discovered moosejaw for my very first purchase. They were the only web site that had the harness when everyone else defaulted to backorders with no specific date in the future. Thank you moosejaw!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect lightweight mountaineering harness Excellent harness for mountaineering! I was suprised at how comfortable this is (obviously not in the same "comfort category" as sport/gym harnesses but about as comfortable as you can have for a light, simple, mountaineering harness). The real gem is that it has a proper belay loop (unlike the BD Alpine Bod harness) and gear loops which make it much more functional than a lot of other mountaineering harnesses. PLUS, it is ultra-compact and fits into an included stuff sack!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lightweight Adjustable Low-Frills Harness Great carry for a lightweight alpine harness. There are lighter harnesses out there such as the Camp Alp variations but with limited to no adjustability. Very burly compared to those other feather harnesses. If you want the absolute lightest harness, I would suggest looking elsewhere, but if you want good weight combined with solid features this is a great choice.,,,,As others have noted, the buckle can provide a minor challenge to double back on but nothing too significant. It is also put on a bit different from what I am accustomed to. Start with the harness behind you and pass the open leg loops and belay loop between your legs. Then pass the front belt webbing through the belay loop and attach the front leg clips. Rear seat straps are droppable.
