Rated 5 out of 5 by from This can keep up with my high schooler!! I needed a good back pack for my daughter entering into high school. It had to hold her laptop, books, pens, makeup and everything else you could imagine a high school girl would need. It has met all of her needs and has not gotten dirty and most importantly it frames her body well so no more back or shoulder pain!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great space, well thought out. I like the variety of pockets and especially the laptop access zipper. Easy to get to and I can find the right pocket for the various items and their sizes without having to struggle to make every shape and size fitting into one pocket fits all. I am petite and short waisted and the fit is good. Although my 15 year old son says I look like a ninja turtle when I wear it. Lol. I would like it to sit a little lower (an inch or so) so that when I look up at the sky the pack isn't touching the back of my head.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great all-around pack This backpack has everything you could want. I bought it for my bike commute and also to use on day hikes. I didn't love the color, do ended up exchanging but otherwise this is an amazing, versatile pack and I'd highly recommend.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great space, but very uncomfortable I needed a durable backpack for school and the reviews pulled me toward this backpack. It has plenty of space and held all of my notebooks and folders, but this backpack is so heavy even without books in it. My skin on my shoulders get tore up from the uncomfortable straps and heavy weight. I do not recommend this backpack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great bag for work/travel/adventures I usually have to carry a very heavy laptop to work everyday, and using my regular backpack made my shoulders sore. I switched to Surge on hubby's insistence, and boy did it help! It distributes the weight very well and is extremely comfortable for everyday use. I've used this is a carry-on bag in flights and found it very comfortable. It has tons of pockets and sections to store all kind of small/big items which you can quickly access. The loop/handle at the front of the bag is more handy that you'd think! The only improvement I'd love to see is that the side pockets to carry bottles should have an elastic band or loop to secure the pocket, my bottles keep falling out of it otherwise (and I've lost a handful of bananas stored there too!).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best backpack for college I absolutely love this backpack for school. I currently commute to school 5 days a week and work right after so I needed a backpack that was spacious and not super bulky. This backpack has 3 big divisions, one where I can neatly put my MacBook 13" in the computer sleeve and it isn't loose. I also have a 2.5" binder as well as notebooks. In the smallest of the divisions, I have my tablet as well as all other electronics cords. There is a zipper pocket on the front that holds my phone and pens with a lot of room and 2 separate pockets in the front. There's so much room I have in this backpack that it was a great investment as I plan to travel and this will be perfect for traveling. The backpack opens all the way for TSA searching which is great. You don't HAVE to open it up all the way either, I haven't had to open it it fully and it won't open all the way unless you do it purposely. This is a great overall backpack and worth the price. I got the black and light blue design and it looks incredibly sleek and doesn't get dirty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Backpack! Held all our essentials during our hikes in Patagonia. It was also perfect as a carry-on at airports. A backpack everyone should have!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from didn't turn out how I expected When I first got this backpack I loved it, but after the first couple days of using it for school, I realized how uncomfortable it was. I can barely squeeze in a textbook and a couple notebooks, and couldn't fit another textbook in after that. Besides being too narrow, my thermos and water bottle kept falling out of the holders at the side when I set it down. The comfort also wasn't there--the shoulder pads dig into my shoulders and don't mold to my back at all. I love the design and pocket structure of this backpack but overall I was very disappointed with how it fit my school necessities as well as how it fit on me.

Do the side pockets fit a L size nalgene?

Asked by: liberated104
Hiya, thanks for the question! A typical 32 oz nalgene will squeeze into the side pocket. A thinner and taller bottle would fit better... but I'm not going to tell you what to do. Hope this helps!

I currently have the unisex recon and have had it since 9th grade.(soon to be college freshman) I am looking at the redesigned recon and the surge. Which one would you recommend considering the compartments/added weight. I don't really have a good posture

Asked by: Gizmo
Thanks for the question! Both packs are a great option and you honestly can't go wrong with either one of them. The Surge is just a tad bigger than the Recon, but surprisingly weighs less. I would say that the Recon is more popular with our college students. The Surge would be more for our traveling customers who need a TSA-friendly back. Both internal compartments are pretty similar - pen holder, cord-keepers, internal zippered pockets, etc. I personally like the Recon best because I don't need the three separate zippered compartments on the Surge. But it all comes down to your preference. In regards to your posture, try not to put the heaviest items in the very bottom of your pack. But them more towards the top. Also, make sure the pack is adjusted to sit higher up, and not slouching down rubbing on your lower back. I hope this helps a little!

If it starts to pour down raining while I'm walking around outside with this bag on, will anything on the inside of the bag get damp/wet?

Asked by: Allie
Hiya Allie, thanks for your question! This pack is water resistant. It could handle light rain but in the case of a downpour, the contents will get wet. If you want a truly waterproof pack, check out the The North Face Homestead Waterproof Pack. You might want to consider a hiking pack like the Osprey Women's Skimmer 22 Pack. It's technically not waterproof but it includes a rain cover. Here are some links for ya: The North Face Homestead Waterproof Pack http://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_The-North-Face-Homestead-Waterproof-Pack_10332188_10208_10000001_-1_ Osprey Women's Skimmer 22 Pack http://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Women-s-Skimmer-22-Pack_10303549_10208_10000001_-1_ Hope this helps!

- + Size Guide

The North Face Women's Packs

SIZE One Size X-Small / Small Medium / Large
Torso Size (Adjustable) N/A" 13 - 18" 15 - 20"
Torso Size (Fixed) 15 - 18" 14 - 17" 16 - 19"
Hipbelt Size 24 - 35" 24 - 30" 30 - 36"

HOW to MEASURE TORSO SIZE
1. Put your chin to your chest and feel for the big bone protruding on your neck at the top of your spine. That's the C7 vertebra.

2. Feel your hip bone, the top part of this is your iliac crest. Find the spot on your back that is level with the top of this crest.

3. Have someone measure the distance between these two points, following the contours of your spine.

HOW to MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE
1. Measure around your body where the hipbelt will rest while you hike. This should be just above your iliac crest.

NOTES
The size info above is for The North Face technical and backpacking packs. Day packs and work / school packs are offered in One Size, and feature adjustable straps to fit an array of sizes.

Women's packs feature a women's-specific design for a better fit and more comfortable carry on smaller female torsos.
