DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite I like practical clothes. I needed a coat to go to work, and then play with my kids in on a weekend. I also needed something long enough to keep my legs warm, not too bulky, and lightweight. My cheapy coat before this one got tossed, and I decided to spend some extra $$ for a coat I could wear a few seasons.,,I'm 5'4", 122 lb and typically wear xs. Tried this coat in xs in a store and it was way too tight all over. Small worked much better. I love the blue color, it goes practically with everything. The quality is good. It is not slim but for a down coat not too puffy. Anyway, I would definitely recommend it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Off-Gassing problem in coat lining I bought this coat as a replacement for an older Metropolis model, which was wearing out. The issue is not so much the fit, which is acceptable, but there is a problem with the lining. It seems to be releasing a weird form of dust, which is making family members sick, and the lining fabric has a sticky feel to it. It seems to get worse when it is washed, even in dilute 7th Generation detergent. I had to buy a less-expensive long parka with a conventional lining. Note that our other North-Face jackets do not seem to have this problem, only this model. It has been banished to the garage. If anyone has a fix for this, please E-mail me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great winter coat Despite living in New York my whole life, I never had a super warm coat since walking to the car to school and back never warranted one. Now that I'm going to college in New England and walking around in the cold for periods of time during the day, a simple jacket or pea coat didn't cut it, especially during this past long winter. I think this coat will be perfect, though. It fits just right while still having room for bulkier sweaters, and the length will be great for keeping my legs warm. It's surprisingly lightweight, and the burnt olive green color is really nice-looking.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cute, but could be improved. I had wanted one of these coats for a couple years and decided this would be year. However, when the coat arrived it just didn't seem to have much down in it. I put it on and walked outside into the 0 F Minnesota evening and got cold after just a couple minutes. This coat would not protect me enough for winter use. Also, the front snaps, which are fantastic to have generally, were really hard to unsnap. I mean to the point that I worried the fabric would tear. The North Face could improve this coat by adding more down, putting fleece lining in strategic places like the chest, pockets, and sleeve openings, and putting in better quality snaps. I had to send it back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very stylish winter jacket I was very careful about purchasing a perfect winter jacket for few months. Usually winter jackets are very expensive and I don't want to waste my money on something not worth. Pros: This jacket is very warm. It has some water resistance (but not recommend in a pouring day). It is very light and easy to move my arms around. I've been wearing this jacket over a month now. Cons: I had troubles to unhook the zipper. I don't know if it's something defected product or just as it is. Also, I'm finding a very few downs falling off the jacket. Overall, I like the product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome! This coat is awesome! I just bought it for Christmas and I can't take it off (even though it's not even cold yet in Boston weirdly enough). It's so comfy and warm and fits perfectly. I'm 5'4" 125 lbs and I bought a small, nervous it would fit kind of tight but it doesn't! I'm glad I went with it. I also bought the charcoal grey color and absolutely fell in love with it. It's not too dark but not too light either. If you're looking for a well fitting coat that doesn't make you look like the abdominal snowman (we've all been there, not cute), then this is it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't debate it; order this coat asap Ordered this to survive walking around Purdue's campus in the winter months. Coat is very warm and soft. In love with the coat. It's also ascetically flattering to my figure. I was concerned with my size (see below) that I would look like a plump little marshmallow. Nope! It's slimming and goes well with whatever type of outfit I have on for the day. Highly recommend!,,,,For sizing reference, I ordered a small. I'm 5'2'', 125 lbs, curvy size 4 in pants, and an A cup. I actually completed the very detailed sizing guidelines at The Northface website, received my sizing of Small and then went over to Moosejaw to order it. Moosejaw had it on sale, as well as the perk of earning 10% back in rewards. No brainer decision.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, warm coat I have looked and looked for a long, warm coat. The NF Transit was too thin and not long enough and the NF Metropolis was not flattering on me at all. So, I decided to try the Miss Metro b/c of its great reviews. I bought this coat in Burnt Olive as I wanted something different than black. It is a beautiful color. The small was too tight, so I returned it for the medium. (I am 5'4, 125 lbs.) The medium fits perfectly, and it is really warm and perfect for Northern NY winters. I am very happy with my purchase!

What is the difference between this coat and the Metropolis coat? Thanks!

Asked by: Sbardt
Hiya, thanks for your question! Both jackets are similar in many ways, however, there are a few differences. The Miss Metro has 1111 grams of insulation while the Metropolis has 850 grams. The materials differ from polyester iridescent taffeta and satin twill lining on the Miss Metro to a polyester/nylon blend exterior and 100% nylon lining on the Metropolis. The design is different, as the Metropolis has contoured quilting around the waist for a more fitted look. Overall, the Miss Metro edges out the Metropolis in weight, materials and style. Hope this helps!

What does TNF Black mean? I'm looking for more of a matte look. Is the TNF Black matte or shiny?

Asked by: nadene82
Hey there, Thanks for reaching out to us! TNF Black is just the North Face's version of black. The photos we show on our site are pretty accurate, as the actual jacket will be more of a matte, as opposed to a 'shiny'. Hope this helped you out!

I am 5'5" and 140lbs. I am trying to decide between the small and medium. I am pretty small up top, but a little bit larger in the hip area. What would you recommend?

Asked by: wisco
Hiya Wisco, thanks for your question! My office mate is a similar size and she tried on this jacket (for science) in a size small. It fits but it is tight and the arms are a little short. She recommends the medium. Hope this helps!

I have short arms.  Will ms metro large have too long arms. I am 5-2 and weigh 140

Asked by: Barbu
Hiya Barbu, thanks for your question! Based on your description, I would suggest a size medium. The sleeve length for medium is 34 inches, while the sleeve length for the large is 34.75 inches. (By the way, the sleeve length is from the prominent bone at center back neck, across the shoulder, over the bent elbow to the center of the wrist bone.) Hope this helps!

Two questions: I am 5'4 and really hoping to find a coat that will go at least to my knees - will this coat work? Also, is the coat waterproof/water-resistant?  Thanks!

Asked by: Annie
Hey Annie, This jacket has a length of 38”, so it reaches a few inches above the knee on most people, however depending on your body type it will vary. This has a polyester outer shell material, so it will block a bit of moisture and wind, however if you are looking for more thorough water protection I would recommend checking out the Metropolis Parka, which has a DWR finish to give more weather protection.
