Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Climbing Pack The Shadow has worked great for weekend trips. It can consolidate what would be held in two packs, down into one, making traveling easier. The +10 feature is very nice when it comes time to pack up and head back home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful, Simple Backpack I have had this pack for over three years and it's my "go to" pack for lightweight backpacking, skiing or climbing. I think to be happy first of all you have to know what you are getting into; this is a top loading "sack pack" with a roll closure by a single cinch strap. I've used a few of these through the years and this pack has the addition of a good frame support and ventilation. However, the deal is you load everything from the top so knowing how to load a pack is important; I put by sleeping back, extra clothing in a waterproof trash compactor bag first (so if I fall in a creek or have heavy rain my need insulation will be dry, this pack IS NOT waterproof, I mean, I hike in the Olympic Mountains, lots of rain). Then I add stove, food etc. This pack rides nice both as a back pack and cinches down nicely for skiing or climbing. The pockets on the hip belt are very small so really I just put in a chap stick and trail flagging, also the zipper pocket is kind of useless with a full pack, it's pushed flat. Hey, but I'm used to a sack pack!! Otherwise, wonderful simple pack, no load bearing zippers, no broken zippers! Enjoy!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A pretty versatile pack The pack is really comfortable and I appreciate its simplicity. I'm 6' and the hip strap falls right where it needs to. This pack small enough that it doesn't feel excessive for a small trip and its size when expanded is perfect when I need a little extra space. The only downside with the black pack is that it's really dark inside the pack making it hard to find things sometimes - something I hadn't considered.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Pain to use The bag is light, but too floppy. You'll need a partner to help you put a rope in. If you use the extension at all, you're going to be getting hit in the back of the head all day.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth the money I enjoy a pack that can withstand normal use and some slight abuse (i.e., throwing it on the ground or in the back of a truck) - especially after a long day when you want to just drop your gear and rest. This pack, after 6 months of use has bit the bullet. Like dominos in a line, one thing after another has begun to unravel - first it was the sternum strap clasp coming clean off its slider, then the draw cord grommet ripping from the body of the pack, and now the bottom of the pack has worn 2 holes the size of a dime. This, mind you, is after 15 days of steady use over a course of 6 months. Once again, I'm thoroughly unimpressed with TNF products and am steering clear of them for the rest of my purchases. They used to be a company that produced quality (i.e., the 1990s); those days are long gone. Buy something else from some other company.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decently good pack. Best you can get for this price range. I used this pack on two trips, mount Washington NH and a winter hike in Steamboat, CO. It held up well, the straps are comfy, and the actual pack is fairly waterproof. You can't drop it in a river, but the sack's material is water wicking. The straps are a bit slow to dry, though. Perfect for hammocking, might be a bit small for a longer trip. I like this pack.

1. Put your chin to your chest and feel for the big bone protruding on your neck at the top of your spine. That's the C7 vertebra.

2. Feel your hip bone, the top part of this is your iliac crest. Find the spot on your back that is level with the top of this crest.

3. Have someone measure the distance between these two points, following the contours of your spine.

1. Measure around your body where the hipbelt will rest while you hike. This should be just above your iliac crest.

The size info above is for The North Face technical and backpacking packs. Day packs and work / school packs are offered in One Size, and feature adjustable straps to fit an array of sizes.
