The North Face Men's Thermoball Trench is a waterproof jacket to get you through cool, wet weather. On your way to work and the rain is falling? DryVent™ 2L with 100% nylon fabric face shields you from the wet stuff as you walk from car to office. The longer trench length adds protection just past the hip and the shaped cuffs prevent your dress shirt cuffs from getting soaked. Late fall and early spring rains can bring with them chills so The North Face has beefed this shell up with ThermoBall™ insulation powered by PrimaLoft®. It's lightweight, just warm enough for cool weather but won't cause you to overheat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Covers all of the bases. This jacket is aces. I purchased it for a recent trip to Torres del Paine park in Chilean Patagonia because I needed an outer shell that was water/wind proof with some insulation, and had a hoodie I could tighten for fit. This jacket kept me warm and dry in the wind and rain while crossing glacier lakes, and the Maggelan Strait by boat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stylish and warm. Has a pretty good fit and is pretty warm. Still has a good amount of room underneath in case you would like to wear a sweater. Sleeves are a bit longer than I expected but I can simply fold about 3/4 inch back easily. I do wish that the hood itself had some insulation though.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could be a little better Feels nice, warm, and light, but without a cinch cord, it will not keep you as warm as it could.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very versatile trench. I would buy this again. Great coat for commuting. Length is perfect for windy and rainy days when extra protection is wanted.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great quality, few flaws Let me start by saying overall this is a great jacket, nice quality and craftsmanship that I would buy again, however there are a few quirky things. 1. It is definitely too large, I am usually between a medium and a large, closer to medium, which is what I ordered and it is easily still a size too big. Not a huge issue, but just a heads up. It is VERY comfortable, but just not as warm as I had hoped. It does block the wind and water well but just not a super warm winter jacket.

How does this compare to the Plasma thermoball jacket? I am looking for a waterproof synthetic insulated jacket suitable for Northeast winter weather in 25-40 degree range. I am also considering the MH Radian and MJ Mt Elliot. Your opinion?

Asked by: Jaygreen55
Thanks for the question! The Trench is a tad longer (at 32 inches) then the Plasma - which is 30 inches in length. The Trench is also breathable and has slightly more grams of insulation. All four options you mentioned are waterproof and offer synthetic insulation - which are suitable for NE Winters. Both Thermoball's have PrimaLoft insulation, the Radian has Thermal.Q™ insulation - which is a patented Mountain Hardwear material, and the Mt Elliott has PrimaLoft Silver - which is the high-performance synthetic insulation. You really can't go wrong with any of them. The Trench offers the highest amount of gram insulation, tho. Hope this helps a little!

The hood is detachable or zips into the collar?  Does the collar always  stand-up like a turtleneck or can it lie in a more traditional flat posture?

Asked by: BLCA
Hiya BLCA, thanks for your question! The hood is stow-able but does not detach. The collar will lay flat if it is not zipped up all the way. Hope this helps!

What temperature range is this coat good for?

Asked by: IBogy
Thanks for the question! Unfortunately, The North Face does not temperature rate their garments. With that being said, the Thermoball Trench is pretty well insulated. I would say even more than the regular Thermoball Full Zip. You should be comfortable in the low 20's. Any lower I would add a base layer underneath. Hope this helps!
