DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would recommend this coat Great jacket. Pit zips, appropriate sized hood, stylish design. I've looked for a long time to find a gore Tex shell that has this type of soft lining to avoid that stiff, rigid, cold feel. This is it. This is "slim fit" so the body is cut pretty snug. I'd prefer "regular fit"to allow for layering options. Overall great jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A More Comfortable Waterproof Jacket I've had the pleasure of wearing the North Face Apex Flex jacket, on rainy days, for 6 months. What drew me to this jacket was the possibility that this would truly be a hybrid of a softshell and hardshell. I was somewhat skeptical of how this type of jacket would hold up in the heavy rain. However, I was up for a challenging this technology. Upstate NY has an abundance of water around my home. As a result, a jacket of some water resistance is often a necessity if you want to stay active. I've always found that a hardhell is the best option with compromises. They are crinkly, tend to be breathability challenged, and often have climbing specific features. One such feature is the oversized hood. I don't climb, and don't wear helmets with by coats, so cinching down the excessive hoods was just a necessary annoyance. I also own a good softshell that is great for most general usage, but is only good for short stints in the rain before it gets saturated. This is where my interest in the Apex flex originated. In short, this jacket delivers on its promises with few caveats. It is very much the everyday, soft feeling jacket that delivers hardshell performance. The shell is quite flexible and supple feeling. You can comfortably wear the Apex Flex with just a t-shirt thanks to a soft sweatshirt like lining. I suspect much of the excellent feel of the Apex Fkex is due to the membrane technology. Theres no hint of crinkle from the Gore Tex membrane. However, I have yet to have a single leak after more uses than I can count. Despite being totally waterproof this membrane is surprisingly breathable. I've jogged in comes weather while wearing the jacket and driven in it quite often without feeling like I was seating. The DWR treatment is also of excellent quality and produces beads of water consistently. The fit of the Apex Flex doesn't suffer despite its more general purpose design. I'm 6 ft, 230 lbs, and XL fits me nicely with no bagginess or tightness. The sleeves are just slightly long if you are inclined to reach overhead a lot, but the been line doesn't ride up. The hood sits somewhere in the middle for size. I feel it works great without a helmet, but one could fit a conservatively sized helmet underneath. Under heavy rain the water is routed away from the collar so there's never any leakage into the neck area. If I could change anything, I might add something to adjust the brim of the hood. The brim is stiffened but I wouldn't mind being able to shape it a little. Additionally, the main zipper, while reliable, is pretty stiff. However, this is the nature of the beast with waterproof zips. For the price, I might have expected there to be concessions in the build somewhere, but I can really find any. The materials are to notch performers. The taped seams are all consistent, the stitching is all neat and has held up without fail. I find the Apex Flex to be a true best bang for buck option for the everyday user. You could use it for climbing but its not focused there. The Apex Flex shines most elsewhere, such as on the bike trails, hiking the hills, running in the rain. But it will also get you comfortably into the grocery store on the stormy drive home. North Face somehow brought forth an innovative feel and performance combo that I believe people have been wishing for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really good all purpose jacket...seriously 4.99 stars I live in the south and have found that there is nothing better for our fall/winter month weather than a really good softshell that is waterproof/windproof and a mid-weight level of warmth...we have lots of days that only get down into the 40s (I get it you mountain goats...thats not that cold...whatever)...but what you guys may not understand is the level of humidity that exists year-round down here and the 40 degree days that are nothing but a constant blowing wind chilling rainy mist...this jacket is absolutely perfect for this's heavy and warm enough that I can just wear a t-shirt/golf shirt underneath and then take it off when I get inside...and keeps both the wind chill (the humidity breeds some pretty good wind chills down here) and the mist/drizzle out completely...I will probably use this jacket during wet weather for any months outside of June-September as I'd say that anything warmer than 70-75 degrees will make this jacket too hot to wear. As far as being active in it, this jacket is a slim says it right on the tag "slim cut" if you're planning on buying this jacket and trying to wear it in -20 cold with your 3 base layers...puff vest and pullover...well there isn't going to be room for that and you should be looking for a real shell...I plan on using my 3-1 parka to ski/ride like i normally do but could maybe pull this one out if it's really warm late in the can definitely ski in this based on the quality, the hood, and wind/water features, you just probably wouldn't want to in the freezing cold...any sport that doesn't require layers on layers of insulation then you should be able to do anything with this...hike/bike/music fest/tailgate whatever...continuing my digression below:

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great jacket!! Amazing jacket! I'm 6', 185 lbs, 40" chest and I bought a Large. The slimmer fit is perfect. The feel of of the material on the outside as well as in is very comfortable. The pit zips allow you to manage your temperature perfectly. Can't go wrong with this piece.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent Product. Weird Size Sleeve length is really long. I'm imagining they designed this thinking people would wear a lot of clothes underneath or something.

In the pic, the 'TNF Light Grey Heather' color looks like a pure white. Is the real jacket more greyish/darker than the pic or the same?

Asked by: Wayne
Hiya thanks for your question! The color is actually a very light warm grey, definitely not pure white. Hope this helps!

Hi, there. I'm 6'0, 156lbs, a typical Asian body built. I'm wondering which size would fit me better, S or M? Actually, I usually go with S, which fits me perfectly. But this one is labeled as active fit. I‘m torn between these two size. Any suggestion?

Asked by: Wayne
Hiya, thanks for your question! Based on your description I would suggest size small, however, if you plan on wearing a lot of layers underneath it or have really long arms, you could size up to a medium. Hope this helps!

I live in New Hampshire and enjoy winter hiking. How would this hold up in temperatures below freezing?

Asked by: Mike603
Hey there, Thanks for the question. Since this jacket isn't insulated, it wouldn't work on its own in colder temperatures, but if you layered it with say, a lightweight down jacket underneath, you should stay pretty toasty without getting overheated. The jacket will keep the elements out, and combined with some good layering underneath you should be good to go for winter hiking!

Is the "active fit" a slimmer style? If my son is 6'2" and about 160 pounds, would the medium work for him (he likes a more tailored fit)?

Asked by: Maria
Hi there Maria! Thanks for your question. The medium should work great for your son. I had my co-worker (who is the same height and a tiny bit heavier than your son) try on the jacket, and it fit him really well. The sleeves are a great length for those on the taller side, and the fit is tailored but not as tailored as a slim fit. Hope this helps!
