The North Face Borealis Backpack is a laptop backpack for dragging your gear to and from school. The Borealis has been a stable force in the school bag line for TNF for quite awhile, so when it came to changes, they worked long and hard in the implementation. First and foremost, the backbone was given a boost with the FlexVent™ suspension, injection-molded shoulder straps, and a padded backpanel with spine channel. It aids in comfort whenever you have to get up and carry a heavy load on your back. The padded and fleece lined laptop compartment (in main section) protects from bumps and there is even the same treatment available for your tablet in the front compartment. A small front zip pocket has also been fleece-lined for your phone, just make sure you put it on silent or it'll be captured down in the front office for awhile. For you classic lovers of this pack, no worries, the bungee cord is still there, strapping down rain jacket or hoodie when not in use.

Products on Sale are Discontinued Styles or Colors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for high school/college High school student using bag. Bag held up all school year (Feb now) still looks new, great Northface quality. Good spot to put a computer, albeit it needs to be a smaller computer (Chromebook barely fits). Good support for back and lots of pockets for things like pens or snacks.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Stiff It's different in person than it was online for me. I don't like how hard the back is and don't need a million buckles because most people who will get this only need one. I wish the flex-vent thing would go away and there was just a more water-tight seal. Overall it does the job and it has big enough pockets for the average college student.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 1 issue i love this backpack, it's just the super annoying piece of plastic they decide to put in the back. it wouldn't be a problem if you could remove it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all around pack! A very spacious pack with plenty of pockets. Plenty of room for everything. Zippers are of high quality. Most pockets are felt kind to protect your belongings. Also, shoulder straps are comfortable for the “long-haul”! Highly recommended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from NICE DESIGN, STIFF AS CARDBOARD. Look guys, don't get me wrong, I bought this bookbag because i thought it was appealing and I loved it when it got here but it literally feels like there's a piece of cardboard in the back of the bag, it makes it even slightly hard to unzip, be aware that this is a nice durable backpack but you will carry a piece of wood along with everything else you choose to put in it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too small I've had this bag since my freshman year of college (3 1/2 years). I use it every single day and it still looks brand new and hasn't shown any signs of wear or tear. It's extremely durable and comfortable but the only downside is that it's sooo small.. like way too small and has really no room to stretch. This bag fits a binder, a notebook and a small textbook TIGHTLY. I really love it but I hate the size. I definitely wouldn't repurchase solely because of the size but other than that it's great quality.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Stiff as a Board This product is very high quality and is made with top notch materials, and I am sure that it would withstand much wear and tear before eventually breaking down. Despite this, this backpack has one significant issue, namely how flexible it is. I chose this backpack to replace my Dakine Campus 33 liter backpack and was sorely disappointed. The back part of the pack (with the cooling feature) is stiff as a board, as if there were an unreasonably large and stiff piece of cardboard shoved in there when it needn't be. This stiffness made it almost impossible to fit my 12.5 inch laptop (with protective laptop sleeve) in the pack's specified laptop sleeve. While I can see why this backpack would appeal to some, as a full time college student who must carry at least 2 books, a notebook, binder, and laptop along with pens and pencils, I find the non-flexible spine to be highly uncomfortable. If you are a college student and are used to soft spine backpacks, I would not recommend this pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality Bought as a Christmas present and they love everything about it. I wish I had one myself. The pack is very functional for many varied uses.

what type of nylon is this pack made of?

Asked by: Mike
Hey Mike, This pack is made of Ripstop Nylon Cordura, aka the good stuff. That's what makes this super durable and have that awesome canvas-type look.

The specs say this bag holds a 13 inch laptop, but some of the reviews say it fits a 15 inch. Which is it? I have a 15.6 inch laptop.

Asked by: fmcclure
Hey there, Thanks for the question. The dimensions of the laptop sleeve for this pack are 12” x 13”, so this would unfortunately not fit a 15" laptop.

Do the side pockets fit a large Nalgene bottle comfortably? I've only found information on last year's model and people have said they don't really fit.

Asked by: Baker
Hey there, Thanks for reaching out to us! My shipping manager has like 5 of TNF Borealis Backpacks and he says that his Nalgenes fit good in the side water bottle pockets. I hope this helps!

- + Size Guide

The North Face Men's Packs

SIZE One Size Small / Medium Large / X-Large
Torso Size (Adjustable) N/A" 15 - 20" 17 - 22"
Torso Size (Fixed) 17 - 20" 16 - 19" 18 - 21"
Hipbelt Size 28 - 40" 28 - 34" 35 - 42"

HOW to MEASURE TORSO SIZE
1. Put your chin to your chest and feel for the big bone protruding on your neck at the top of your spine. That's the C7 vertebra.

2. Feel your hip bone, the top part of this is your iliac crest. Find the spot on your back that is level with the top of this crest.

3. Have someone measure the distance between these two points, following the contours of your spine.

HOW to MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE
1. Measure around your body where the hipbelt will rest while you hike. This should be just above your iliac crest.

NOTES
The size info above is for The North Face technical and backpacking packs. Day packs and work / school packs are offered in One Size, and feature adjustable straps to fit an array of sizes.
