Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad design By changing the design they have ruined otherwise an almost perfect bag. There is no strap to carry it on your shoulder. There are no holes to attach a padlock. TNF - what have you done?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Excellent Materials, Size - Poor on carrying and comfort This bag is extremely well made, material and stitching. Can't say enough how well-made it is. Perfect size also for carry-on. Easily can be used for a week trip. So the downsides? It is missing a shoulder strap and also middle handle. I know they redesigned this bag, but those are really big misses now. Very bulky to handle through an airport without the shoulder strap or middle handle to quickly grab and go. Because of this I opted out of this bag for recent travel. I instead went with Best American Duffel 3.0 bag and it is better made, American made, and extremely user friendly in all regards. Better cinch straps, arguably better bag material also. Check that bag out as part of your choice considerations. It is not 100% waterproof, but though will likely last a lifetime. North Face needs to bring back the shoulder strap and middle strap for this size of bag. Once they do, it will be hard not to reconsider.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect International Carry-On! Just got back from a 3 week European journey using only this bag and it was perfect for my trekking and carry-on needs! If you're debating between this size or the medium size for carry-on use, I would highly recommend getting this small size as anything larger would have been required to be checked. Fit perfectly in both the major airline carry on testers as well as the smaller airline testers that I used to hop from country to country. If you're a minimalist like me, you can easily fit all you'd need in this bag for a 2-3 week hostel/hotel based journey. Very easy to pack and carry. Extended treks can become slightly uncomfortable as the shoulder straps aren't extremely padded. I've walked up to about 20 kilometers with this bag on my back and I noticed shoulder soreness about halfway through. I definitely wouldn't recommend it for extended backcountry trips as it's not comfortable or large enough for camp gear and clothes/equipment. Also, I'm not extremely confident in its waterproofing/repellent capabilities as some of my clothes inside were wet after walking about 5km in medium to heavy rain. The contents did stay dry through a lot of light rain, however. Overall, I have no regrets purchasing this bag and would definitely recommend it to anyone using it as described above!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Probably wont buy again Bag is a nice design. Minus teo major flaws. No shoulder strap or hand carry handles. This should not be called a duffle but rather a large bookbag. Not sure when or why it was changed. But the bag would be much better if it had those two straps along with the bookbag carry straps it already comwa with

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 0 for 2 for cary options This is a new design of the classic NF duffle. But I can't understand why they call it a duffle anymore as it lacks two very fundamental basic aspects of a duffle. You should be able to carry a "duffle" by either a shoulder strap that attaches to the two opposite ends of the bag or, as an alternative, grab the duffle by the two handles in the middle of the bag and clench this with one hand. This bag used to have both; now it has neither. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. You can either use it as a backpack, which is not the best use of the design, or you can grab it by a single handle on the side, which makes for awkward unbalanced carry. I bought one from an online retailer and could not figure out how to carry it like a duffle - you simply can't.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What I really needed! The North Face Duffel bag is a great companion to everything I need. I use to ride a motorcyle in a daily basis and the bag works for me because I can carry it like a backpack. Besides, if there's a rain comming, the bag is resistent to water. It helps to keep my stuff dry. When I have a short travel (going out for the weekend, or a complete week off) the bag works just fine. I loved the bag. The quality and the looks are awesome. I'm sure that I'll have a bigger size to use in a bigger travel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This bag might look small, but it fits quite a lot! I use this bag for short trips and it fits quite a lot of things!! It might look small but don't judge a book by it's cover! Overall it's lightweight, spacious and I can bring it almost anywhere I go. A good size bag for general purpose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new camera gear carry on. For years I've traveled with one of these bags (in the older medium style) as an additional, checked gear bag. Cliched-down, half empty at the start of a trip and many times back home, almost full, that bag has come rolling out of a lot of baggage belt black holes. I think this new bag design is even better! The new handle and shoulder strap redesign, pushed me to buy a new "small" for carryon. I think it will make the perfect under the seat, "adjustable" backpack, a viable replacement for my Surge, which is too small for the camera bag, etc. I keep trying to make it swallow. The zippered pocket at the shoulder strap top end of the bag makes it even better. Surprising that some other competitor high-end duffels don't have the compression straps, the most import element of this bag for me. Only problem now is I want a blue one too.

Can I use this as a carry on item? Does it fit in the overhead bin?

Asked by: LoJo
Hey there, Thanks for the question. The use of this as a carry-on item or its ability to be stowed into an overhead bin would depend on the specific airline you're flying, since these sizes and limits vary between each one. This bag has dimensions of 12.8” x 20.87” x 12.8”. The typical carry on size dimensions for an airline are roughly 16" x 22" x 9" so this might be a tad too large in width to be used as a carry-on.

The North Face website says the small duffel is 50 L (3051 cubic inches).  Here it is listed as 42L (2563 cubic inches).  Which is correct?

Asked by: Kimbap
Thanks for the question! Looks like our product specs are incorrect. The Small Duffel is in fact 50 liters (3051 in³) / 12.8” x 20.87” x 12.8”. I will get that updated on our site right away. Thanks for the heads up!

Does the bag in black (TNF Black) has "New small end-cap zippered pocket is perfect for keys, a wallet or little items". It's written in the bag's features. But I'm unable to see it from the bag's photo

Asked by: koko
Hiya Junny, thanks for your question! The zipper is right above the logo and below the handle. It is not visible from the pictures on this product page. I'll ask our Web Content Team to add a picture to this page. Sorry for the confusion!
