The Smartwool PhD Outdoor Light Crew is a lightweight sock for hiking, biking, running and more. If you're outdoors and ready for adventure, the PhD Outdoor Light Crew will be happy to come along for the ride. The blend of merino wool, nylon, and elastane wicks sweat away from your feet and dries out quickly, keeping you comfy in your boots, hiker lows, or whatever footwear you've got on. The 4 Degree™ Elite fit system wraps your ankle, upper and lower instep, and arch with bands that allow for flex and recovery. I like to call it energy for your feet.

FEATURES of the Smartwool PhD Outdoor Light Crew

  • 4 Degree elite fit system uses two elastics for greater stretch and recovery to keep the sock in place
  • Patented ReliaWool technology in high impact areas provides longer lasting protection to keep feet comfortable
  • Strategically placed mesh ventilation zones provide ventilation for temperature and moisture management
  • Flat knit durable toe seam for high burst strength

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Socks East of the Mississippi! These socks are superb! When I first tried them on the PCT I was legitimately amazed at their performance. They are truly the sock to end all other socks. Breathable, comfortable, lightyears more advanced than regular cotton or even the most modern synthetic blends. These socks take wool to an entirely new level, one which I am happily becoming acquainted with. I will definitely be buying more of these in the future. If I could afford to, I would only wear these socks and throw out every cotton sock I own. It's moisture wicking properties are second to non and its warmth to weight ratio is outstanding. Arguably the best socks ever made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've worn SmartWool socks exclusively for years now. When I first started wearing them only the "classic" looking hiking type varieties were available. SmartWool socks have always been comfortable and their durability continually exceeds expectations. SmartWool's guarantee makes me a confident consumer. Any company that says "send them back if you're not satisfied." is worth doing business with in my book. I was so excited when the Phd line was introduced - it gave so many more performance options (and more stylish options as well). These light weight crew socks have become my favorite warm weather sock for every activity from sitting on my butt in the office, to climbing 14ers, to century gravel bike rides and everything in between. Thanks for making such an amazing product, SmartWool - and thank you for standing behind your product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great backpacking sock I bought these a while ago for a light to mid-weight hiking sock in my Salomon GTX's. They're the perfect height, perfect weight, provide lubrication to prevent blisters, and are well made. Liked them so much that I bought a couple more pairs (on sale) to use for skiing, as the full-length PhD's are a tad bit too long. If you prefer a lighter sock and not full length, then these are great quality socks and the price is right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like a masseuse for your feet I bought these socks for rucking in the military, and so far they've withstood everything the Marine Corps has thrown at them. I can wear these for multiple days in a row and my feet stay dry and cool. After getting wet they will continue to prevent blisters and are still comfortable. 20 mile hikes are no sweat (literally!) and I've never had to change them out during a ruck. You will not go wrong with these socks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable Breathable Socks that work with sucky shoes too Ahhhh. That is what my feet said after a long day of walking around in wet muddy crap, with crappy shoes on over these amazing socks. I walked through puddles on a dirt trail after weeks of rain. My shoes soaked through, but my feet stayed warm and felt dry! Cant tell you enough how much I like these socks! The padding on the toes and heels is excellent. Expensive for socks, but smartwool is well worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely comfortable These PhD socks are cool because they only have padding in areas where you need it -- the heel and toebox. Elsewhere, they're lighter elastic, which is great for keeping your feet cool and dry around the arch and top of the foot. Of course, if you're used to thicker-all-around socks -- and critically, if you've broken in your hiking boots with big bulky ones -- you might have to adjust a bit. But it's worth the adjustment. I wear size 10.5 and got the Large, and they fit well. I was worried at first that they were too small -- they fit really tightly -- but that's so the friction is sock-boot rather than foot-sock, preventing blisters (and removing the need for liners, if you're like me and hate wearing two layers). These are relatively thin and best for three-season hiking/backpacking: if you took these winter hiking/climbing, you would freeze. (Go for a thicker pair if you want warmth in sub-40 degree temperatures).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These socks are dialed in like my saddle height Whether its 30* F and raining or the brutal Louisiana sun is beating down, these light, wool socks regulate your foot temperature while cycling unlike any other. They are like a base layer for your feet, making sure that the last thing you're worried about on your ride is a blister or cold feet. Save those for your wedding day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smartwool! Need I say more? These socks have been great for working outdoors and wearing with my hiking boots. They are very breathable, they do not stink even after days of wearing them and sweating in them. They don't chafe or irritate my feet when they are damp and sweaty either. Not so bulky that they are intrusive and make my boots tight either.
