Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good filter, but could use some design improvements. This filter is awesome and quick if you're filtering water from a low sediment/ debris source. However, I ran into an issue where the hose port in the dirty bag kept getting clogged from sand and tiny bits of kelp. After clearing the hose port about 3 times, I had to fill the dirty bag with my stove pot and pour the water through a t-shirt as a primary filter to get the debris out. I realize that sand and debris can be an issue with any filtration system, but clearing the dirty bag's port from obstructions is a real hassle since it's located deep within the bag and hard to get to. I would suggest that the folks at Platypus redesign the dirty bag to include some sort of primary fine-screen filter to help in situations like mine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Volume Calculations Only gripe is the volume labels. 140oz/4L, 100oz/3L, 70oz/2L, 34oz/1L. Why wouldn't they just label it correctly? Is the common backpacker not smart enough to understand this 5oz variance at 4L? Am I miscalculating? Also the design would be better with a locking clip on the dirty water bag. I wouldn't trust carrying the dirty water bag when it is full of water. The bag is good for walking a short distance from a water source while holding the bag. They have locking clips for the hydration water bags with similar design, not sure why they would omit this! If it came with a bottle kit, that would make this system even better. Not sure if I can buy the kit to use with this...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a winner for group backpacking The 4 liter is the best! We were out for 3 nights with 6 people and it served 90% of our water needs. Everyone pitched in and got water and easily dealt with the simple connections. The water was exceptionally clear from the river so it filtered quickly. I was with another group earlier in the summer on the Owyhee River which was a 7 day trip and we went through one filter for 7 people. It is light compared to a hand pump. Definitely a winner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Way better than pumping This is a well designed system and easy to use, but it could be even better. The Clean reservoir needs an on-off spigot to screw on after filtering is done so that you can easily dispense the water. The push-pull cap that Platypus makes is terrible for this purpose. It's hard to open and close when hanging from a tree. Also, I added quick-connector to the clean end so that I could filter directly into my Big Zip hydration bladder and not have to carry the clean reservoir on some trips. If you keep the other connector you can also filter into a Hoser. This should be standard equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best group water filter out there I am a professional outdoor leadership instructor, and have helped start outdoor programs for youth in over 30 countries. For 25 years it has been a privilege to encourage and equip young indigenous leaders looking to offer quality outdoor adventures appropriate for their unique cultural context. There are few pieces of gear that I can recommend as highly. I've field tested almost every water filter out there, and the 4L gravity works is the best group filter on the market. Period. It is light weight, doesn't take endless time to pump, and is effective. It is important to find fairly clean water sources which would be the only drawback. I typically travel with a second cartridge just in case, but can only recommend this product. I also use a UV light bottle for personal travel use, but for group use I will continue to use this as my go-to product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've never considered going back to my pump. I've used my 4.0 L Gravity Works guiding in the Sierras for two summers now. I love that I can hang the system and get back to business. I'm ordering two more for facilitating larger groups in a base camp setting. The learning curve for me was in keeping water in the filter and line between uses by engaging the little pinch lock before the last of the water passed through the filter. This seems to speed up the next filtering process by keeping air out of the filaments. The bags hold enough water to back flush and still have 4 L left. The clear plastic allows the operator to get an idea how dirty the water is and to adjust back flushing accordingly. Slower filtration means either more back flushing or air in the lines. Great for mosquito infested lakes and streams too. Just haul the Gravity Works back to the tent and watch it work for you. Only drawback is that the system can't freeze.

What happens to filter if it freezes in September in higher altitudes

Asked by: Llama packer
Hiya Llama packer, thanks for your question! You should not use a water filter after it has been exposed to freezing water. You should consider using tablets instead, like MSR Aquatabs or Katadyn Micropur MP1 Purification Tablets. Check them out here: MSR Aquatabs Water Purification Tablets https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_MSR-Aquatabs-Water-Purification-Tablets_10334660_10208_10000001_-1_ Katadyn Micropur MP1 Purification Tablets https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Katadyn-Micropur-MP1-Purification-Tablets_10009076_10208_10000001_-1_

Does this system filter to drinkable water standards? The video says cooking/cleaning water. Would the Platypus Gravityworks Carbon Filter Element be a benefit or does the included filter perform carbon filtering? Thanks

Asked by: Tincup
Hey there Tincup, good questions! Yes... in addition to providing water for cooking and washing, this system provides clean drinking water. You can use the Carbon Filter Element along with with the GravityWorks filter to improve the taste or odor but its not a necessity. (Some people can't tell the difference in taste so it's just a preference.) Since the carbon filter will not filter out the bad stuff on its own, you'll want to use the carbon filter after the water is already filtered with the regular filter. It is an accessory and not meant to be used as a substitute for the regular filter. (Wow, I just said filter A LOT.) Hope this helps!
