Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it. Clean water clear mind. I set camp at 10800', water was at 10000'. I would filter clean bag, fill dirty bag and hike back to camp. Quick, easy, idiot proof. Invaluable tool. I enjoy all your gear. Well thought out, made well. I look forward to more vertical and more clean water for coffee.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great concept but design needs tweeking We purchased this for a backpacking trip along the Colorado. It saved less time and hassle over pumping than we'd anticipated. Because the filter can easily get clogged, and the drain port on the dirty water reservoir is at the very bottom, (poor placement), we wanted to avoid getting silt in the dirty water reservoir. So we gathered water in a different container to let the silt settle out. Also it is not practical to directly fill the dirty water container from a shallow source, such as along a sandy beach, and we didn't want to wade into the river up to our waists just to get water. Due to the very stiff zipper, (totally unnecessary and impossible to close if the water or weather is cold), the top of the reservoir is a struggle to keep open in any situation. When filtering the full 4 liters at once, air in the clean water reservoir pressurizes as the reservoir fills, eventually stopping the flow. Detaching the full clean water reservoir results in substantial spillage, as does trying to pour water from the reservoir. It needs to have a handle, such as was on the recently discontinued Platypus PlusBottle, and it also needs to be able to stand upright (at least a little). The current design is about as manageable as a large water balloon. In the future I will probably substitute other, smaller, Platypus bottles that are designed to stand upright.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product That Could Be Better I use this filter while camping and while hiking; it can filter enough water for a large basecamp, and it's light and fast enough for a quick hiking group. It doesn't get much simpler than this -- just fill and hang. That said, the bag could be designed better. My biggest wish is that there was some sort of spigot or cap installed in the bag besides where the filtered water runs in. I personally find the process of having to fill the clean bag, flip it, remove the hose and cap the bag cumbersome, but not difficult. If there was a way to collect water from the bag as water was still being filtered in, I believe this system would be many times better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast filtering! We saw this gravity filter being used on a previous backpacking trip by a friend of ours. My wife and I couldn’t believe how fast it filtered. We decided to purchase one immediately when we got back. Moosejaw had the best price and it was our first time using this site. We weren’t disappointed. Great product and fast shipping! It will be a little heavier for those ultra backpacking enthusiasts but well worth the little extra weight for us. We took the platypus on another 25mile trip and it worked flawlessly! I would recommend this filtering system and Moosejaw!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No more pumping...! Used the Platy 4.0L Gravity Works Filter up in the High Peaks in the ADK on a three day trip. It was easy to fill from Marcy Brook which was running next to our lean to. It filters water really fast and a quick back flush kept that flow each time we refilled it. Made getting plenty of water painless. Absolutely love the product. Great for backpacking as it's lightweight.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good filter, but could use some design improvements. This filter is awesome and quick if you're filtering water from a low sediment/ debris source. However, I ran into an issue where the hose port in the dirty bag kept getting clogged from sand and tiny bits of kelp. After clearing the hose port about 3 times, I had to fill the dirty bag with my stove pot and pour the water through a t-shirt as a primary filter to get the debris out. I realize that sand and debris can be an issue with any filtration system, but clearing the dirty bag's port from obstructions is a real hassle since it's located deep within the bag and hard to get to. I would suggest that the folks at Platypus redesign the dirty bag to include some sort of primary fine-screen filter to help in situations like mine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Volume Calculations Only gripe is the volume labels. 140oz/4L, 100oz/3L, 70oz/2L, 34oz/1L. Why wouldn't they just label it correctly? Is the common backpacker not smart enough to understand this 5oz variance at 4L? Am I miscalculating? Also the design would be better with a locking clip on the dirty water bag. I wouldn't trust carrying the dirty water bag when it is full of water. The bag is good for walking a short distance from a water source while holding the bag. They have locking clips for the hydration water bags with similar design, not sure why they would omit this! If it came with a bottle kit, that would make this system even better. Not sure if I can buy the kit to use with this...

What happens to filter if it freezes in September in higher altitudes

Asked by: Llama packer
Hiya Llama packer, thanks for your question! You should not use a water filter after it has been exposed to freezing water. You should consider using tablets instead, like MSR Aquatabs or Katadyn Micropur MP1 Purification Tablets. Check them out here: MSR Aquatabs Water Purification Tablets Katadyn Micropur MP1 Purification Tablets

Does this system filter to drinkable water standards? The video says cooking/cleaning water. Would the Platypus Gravityworks Carbon Filter Element be a benefit or does the included filter perform carbon filtering? Thanks

Asked by: Tincup
Hey there Tincup, good questions! Yes... in addition to providing water for cooking and washing, this system provides clean drinking water. You can use the Carbon Filter Element along with with the GravityWorks filter to improve the taste or odor but its not a necessity. (Some people can't tell the difference in taste so it's just a preference.) Since the carbon filter will not filter out the bad stuff on its own, you'll want to use the carbon filter after the water is already filtered with the regular filter. It is an accessory and not meant to be used as a substitute for the regular filter. (Wow, I just said filter A LOT.) Hope this helps!
