The Patagonia Refugio 28L Pack is a school backpack with plenty of pockets for organizing everything you need to bring from class to class. The first zipper from the back panel is a dedicated laptop sleeve, which is padded and elevated so your expensive laptop (up to 15 inches) won't touch the ground. The main compartment carries your class books, lunch, or a hoodie for the days when the administration just can't seem to control the temperature. A large front panel is organization-central for pens, keys, and even a paperback or e-reader. The pack has two small stash pockets, the vertical one great for your phone and wallet, while the horizontal is lined for protecting your Jackie-O shades (sport shades for the dudes). Everything carries comfortably on your back due to the Air Flow mesh shoulder straps and back panel, keeping you cool on hot days. School can be the pits sometimes, so don't be afraid to take this puppy out on day hikes over the weekend, the laptop sleeve conveniently fits a hydration bladder.

DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FANTASTIC So this backpack is my alternative to my Patagonia Half Mass. It's when I want two straps instead of one. It's GREAT!!!!!!! It'll fit a 17'' laptop with an external battery in the laptop sleeve, without the case. It's padded nicely and doesn't give me giant blisters, even if I pack it full of everything under the sun! The side pockets fit a 1L and 1.5 L Nalgene bottle! There is a little top pocket that fits my iPhone in it, this way I don't lose it! Mine is all black, but sometimes I wish it was colorful!!! And last but not least in the front pocket there is a little mesh lining, it's great for small things to be contained, this way when you unzip the pocket everything doesn't come falling out, ingenious! :D

Rated 5 out of 5 by from College student in Boston -- great! Moved from California to Boston and needed a backpack that was a little bit more weather durable. Pros: survives mild rain/snow, great laptop compartment, handy little pockets and hooks to organizes pencils/chapstick/keys/etc Cons: Water bottle holders don't stretch out very much (for example, can't hold one of those huge Nalgenes) (but then again, there are two on both sides. So I guess just carry two medium bottles instead.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile My Dad's 30+ year old Eddie Bauer backpack that I've used for school, hikes, and travel for the past few years finally wore out, and I needed a backpack that could be as versatile as the Eddie Bauer. Thus far, the Patagonia Refugio seems to be doing the trick. As a school backpack, the laptop sleeve and organization is nice and it looks good. I haven't used the backpack on a hike specifically, but it has been the perfect companion on trail runs so far this summer because the laptop sleeve is compatible with water bladders (it even has a little hole that leads out the top to feed the straw out of). The pack is also water resistant which is a nice touch for walking out in the rain between classes or on rainy run through the woods. Travel wise, it is a bit smaller than the Eddie Bauer pack, but it has done the trick on weekend trips to visit friends as long as I don't overpack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from School and travel backpack The backpack is smaller than I thought it would be but it still does the job of carrying my text books for school, and I even used it for traveling. It's perfect for a day hike too because it is so light weight, and it's actually a perfect size for it too. Because of how awesome it is, my mom wants to borrow it for her big trip to the Himalayas. I just might have to buy her one too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from would recomend to a friend! I absolutely love the blue color on this backpack. I wanted something that I could carry around all day, and still would be useful for different purposes, depending on what i need it for. I absolutely love the laptop compartment, and the fact that I could also use it as a compartment for a water bladder for hikes. I am going to use for my trip to Korea.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for camping and travel I bought this for my brother for Christmas and he loves it. Tons of compartments to store all sorts of items for when he travels and he can also use it for when he goes camping in the summer. He especially liked the padded inset for his laptop. The side pockets are nice for a water bottle and don't puff out when not in use like other bags can.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for its size After several cheap backpacks for my son, I decided to go ahead and get him something nicer. The size isn't too big for him (age 10) and the pockets hold all of his ridiculous fourth grade needs: a Chromebook, 2" binder packed full of half folded papers, a couple of Gooesbumps, snack, water bottle, and a place to clip his lunchbox.

One of the reviews said that her Refugio 28L backpack can fit her 17" laptop. So would I be fine getting this backpack? (Mines an 15.6" laptop and I know that the backpack holds up to 15")

Asked by: fted
Hey there, Thanks for the awesome question. I have checked this item personally with a 17 inch laptop, and although the specs say 15 inch laptops are all it fits, that is incorrect. It CAN fit a 17 inch as well. Therefore your 15.6 in will fit just fine! I hope this helps.

What's the suggested hydration bladder size for this pack? Any specific brands/models that work better?

Asked by: Matt
Thanks for the question! A 2L will be a good fit, but a 3L will work too - just might take up a little more room since it is on the larger side. My brand suggestion is a CamelBak. I included a link below for you to check out. Hope this helps!

Can this fit a 13 in. laptop, a 1 L nalgene in one side pocket, and a 24 oz coffee travel container?

Asked by: liberated104
Hiya, thanks for the question! This pack will fit up to a 15" laptop. Both side pockets will fit a nalgene or a 24 oz coffee travel mug. It also has lots of pockets to carry your keys, Pop Tarts, your English / High Valyrian dictionary... you know, the essential things. Hope this helps!

is this backpack machine washable? Refugio 28L

Asked by: Talker 44
Thanks for the question. Patagonia does not recommend machine washing their packs, you will want to hand wash it with dish soap or regular detergent. Hope this helps!
