The Patagonia Men's Dual Aspect Hoody is a hybrid jacket for winter hiking and climbing. It's not quite a mid layer and not quite a shell, but a solid middle ground so you can enjoy benefits of each. Shelled Polartec® Power Shield® fabric is placed at the upper torso, back, shoulders, and tops of sleeves to resist wind, weather, and abrasion. A durable water repellent finish helps deter moisture, so you won't get soaked. The rest of the jacket is Polartec® Power Dry®, which is super stretchy and breathable where you need it most. Together the two fabrics offer warmth and while you may still need a hardshell in super harsh weather, they'll allow it to slide over top quickly.

FEATURES of the Patagonia Men's Dual Aspect Hoody

  • Patterned through upper torso and down sleeves, a Patagonia exclusive shelled Polartec Power Shield fabric balances wind, weather and abrasion resistance with warmth and breathability
  • Shelled Polartec Power Shield on back and shoulders is cut on bias for mechanical stretch
  • Polartec Power Dry fabric in hood, side panels, lower torso and down sleeves delivers warmth, stretch and breathability
  • Snug-fitting balaclava-style hood provides warm, stretchy, breathable comfort under a helmet
  • Two high handwarmer pockets with Slim Zips stay clear of a harness or pack waistbelt, single zippered exterior chest pocket
  • Elastic binding at hood, hem and cuffs seals out weather

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite winter alpine softshell? I really like this jacket and there isn't a lot like it on the market. Durable water/wind resistant softshell type material in the wear/exposed areas and super breathable fleece in the under/inner arms for venting. Other hybrids tend to have some thin softshell or similar material in the inner arms, but nothing breathes like fleece. In addition many of the latest generation of "active insulation" pieces aren't very durable. This hoody makes a fantastic outer layer for activity in winter (ie ice/mixed climbing, fast/light gully routes). The stretchy fleece portion at the waist lets it stay nicely tucked under a harness, even though at 6'1" I'm on the tall side for a Medium. If I could change one thing I'd make the hood softshell instead of fleece, but others might like it the way it is. The hood does stretch over a helmet if you prefer your outer layer to go over your helmet (I do), though I don't think that's what it's intended for. The fit is quite good for a Patagonia piece, I'm a slim climber with broad chest/shoulders and it's not too boxy, arm length is adequate for overhead movement; it's stretchy which helps. I have many other highly-rated softshells (Ferrosi, Gamma MX) and I was pretty surprised by how much I liked this one after picking it up on sale on a whim. Great blend of durability, weather resistance, breathability. Obviously no piece of gear is perfect for every occasion and in super exposed windy conditions the breathability will work against you, but I think I will end up wearing this more often than my other shells.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shoulder season jacket Breathes well, and warm enough to be my only layer on chill morning's. Blocks wind, basically totally, and layers perfectly under a puffy for really cold situations

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Colors and material on fleek! First, I found this exact jacket in Tahoe. My boyfriend wanted it so badly. There was no way in h double hockey sticks that I was going to pay $289 for a jacket. I came home, did a little research and found myself on Moose jaw. The price of this jacket was perfect! I gave it to my boyfriend on V-Day (yeah, I thought it was specifically a day for chicks to get gifts too, but nope). He has worn it every day since. He said it keeps him warm when he needs to be warm, cool when he starts getting too warm and then just looks super hot in this jacket. The colors are amazing. I love the blue and green! The packaging was nice too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Different, but I like it, especially XC skiing Almost sent it back because it felt like a wetsuit. Expecting warm and soft and stretchy, but the power shield is a bit stiff. Back is cut on bias so you get some stretch across the shoulders, but still pulls if you try to hug yourself. Used it over Cap 1 t-shirt and cap 4 zip top with balaclava XC skiing and I was extremely pleased. It keeps out the wind, keeps me warm, and breathes remarkably well. No clammy back. Works well brisk dog walking. Find using the hood over a hat pulls the body off my shoulders, but without the hat fits perfectly. Sleeves have no problem fitting over cap 4 or R-1 and not too tight. Classic Patagonia fit and superb quality. 6'1" 198 and large perfect. Probably perfect for its designed use uphill skiing. It will surprise you.
