The jacket is full of 800 fill power goose down inside of a durable 100% recycled polyester ripstop shell to surround your upper body with warmth. The shell is windproof to block gusts and is also coated with a durable water repellent to deter light snow. When you're not sure what the weather has in store, it compacts down into it's own chest pocket, ready when the weather turns without taking up space or weighing down your pack. DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile--just one minor complaint I just took delivery of this last week, and it has kept me very warm while I wait out the hot summer heat in my over-air-conditioned home. But seriously, I got this because my wife brought one on a recent backcountry trip, and I became quite jealous. (Our marriage remains intact though.) It's extremely warm and has a good degree of wind protection and reasonable water repellency due to the DWR coating. Can't believe how little volume it occupies when stuffed into its pocket. Will definitely some fleece outerwear at home when I take it on my next trip. I just wish the wrist openings were adjustable, either with velcro or a small drawstring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fit, exceptionally warm and not bulky I picked this up during KC's most recent freeze and can say it exceeded expectation. Besides fitting really well, (true to size with a tailored fit), it is super warm. When I saw it online, I thought it would be a "puffy coat," quite the opposite. It feels like wearing a sweatshirt, and one day I didn't even take it off at my desk. Blocks wind and keeps me super warm in these 15-20 degree days. It defies logic, there's no way it should be this warm! It's the type of coat you can wear while driving and it won't restrain you, it's very flexible. Love it and wish I'd found it sooner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight but very warm! I bought this jacket for my husband for Christmas. He was tired of the same old colors for men's jackets: black, grey, and navy. Patagonia offers unique and rich colors. I chose the ocean blue with the green zippers. The coat has bright colors but is still very masculine. It is also very warm but lightweight. It's not heavy like a traditional winter coat or parka. My husband loves it. It runs on the athletic-fit size, so go up a size if you have any over-50 gut on you. My husband usually wears an XL but he went with an XXL for this jacket and it fits perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This jacket is amazing The 2014 version of the down sweater was redesigned to provide a slightly more tailored fit and longer arms, but it still fits true to size. I am +/- 6'1", 160 lbs and a medium feels like it was custom made for me. It has high quality down and offers tremendous warmth for its weight. The redesign also offers higher quality zippers, which have yet to snag since I've owned it. I look forward to getting many years of use out of this jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warmest, Lightest, most comfortable insulating layer you can get! The fit: It has ample room in the chest and shoulders. I have long arms and have trouble getting gear with long enough sleeves, but that is not a problem here. I can be lifting my kayak onto the roof of my truck with out feeling like a fat man in a little coat. Slim fit layers well under a shell. ,,Attributes: Nice big pockets up front that you can easily get your gloved hand in and out of without any difficulty. The inner breast pocket doubles as a stuff sack so you can stow it in your pack for when you get to the summit ridge. Light weight and almost excessively warm. ,,Cons: It does not breathe well. So it is on you to know when to take it off before you start to sweat when on your climb. It is spend, but you get what you pay for. ,,,,Great Jacket. I love it. Buy it. You will be happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought this in bule on sale at Moosejaw. I also purchased Ghostwispper, compare thoes two jacket, Here's why I like this one. 1. The stitching is impeccable and this looks even better in person than in the picture on site. I don't hesitate to wear it to the office as well as for casual use. 2. This is extremely lightweight, not bulky at all for a down jacket ,It easily is packed into itself. It packs into an internal pocket that can be zippered shut. Perfect for going to the airport during the winter. 3. This has a slim fit. With a thin tee shirt and thin wool sweater on underneath this is comfortable but snug. 4. This is very warm, windproof, and water repellent. I've also been wearing this in a wide variety of temperatures--from a real feel of 10 degrees to a balmy (for the winter) 60 degrees. It has worked great over the entire temperature range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the ticket! I got this jacket in light grey for my husband for Xmas and he is absolutely thrilled with it. He wears it nearly every day. It's the perfect weight for warmer winter days all by itself. It's ideal for layering under a shell on colder days. He's 6 feet tall and weighs around 175 I think. He's very happy with the fit of this jacket in size medium. Patagonia quality, style and responsibility toward the environment. A statement from Patagonia regarding responsible sourcing of the down used in this product. What's not to love?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but Not Great Patagonia needs to make their jackets American size, not European. I wear an XL with every other jacket or shirt except Patagonia. This thing was too tight, and I'm not sure if Patagonia is simply trying to skimp on cost. But as expensive as their jackets are, this thing should fit perfectly. Also, while the jacket is warm for the size, can we update the shell a bit Patagonia? This thing rips at the drop of a dime. Don't even think of getting it near a fence or a flame. Let's update the jacket some, and get a shell that is firmer and one that doesn't melt if you're roasting marshmallows. Aside from that the jacket is warm and thin, making it very portable. It just greatly needs an update to address the issues mentioned.

is the french red a very deep vibrant red or like a faded orange? There are so many shades of red its confusing- I want a bright candy apple red. Also, do you think the xsmall in mens would fit like a small in womens?

Asked by: Lacey
Hey there, Thanks for reaching out to us! I have the Patagonia Men's Down Sweater in French Red in my hands. You're right, there are a lot of reds out there! This particular sweater is not "faded orange," and I wouldn't consider it "bright" or "candied apple red" either. Can you think of red as a primary color? Like when you were a kid and got the red, yellow and blue paint in art class? I think that red describes this sweater. I hope I have helped you narrow down the reds! I was seeing red and almost forgot to answer your question about sizing! I really don't think the XS in men's would fit similar to a S in women's. Why? Men's jackets are cut more square, where as women's jackets tend to be more narrow at the waist to better accommodate the shape of their hips.

I just received the Men's down sweater jacket. It doesn't seem like it will be warm enough for our winters here. It seems too lightweight for temperatures under 32? I know it is 800 fill down count. What does that mean in regards to Warmth? any warmer one

Asked by: KBlakes
Hiya KBlakes, these are some great questions! The 800 down fill count refers to the quality (fluffiness) of the down, not necessarily warmth. The higher the fill, the better the quality and lighter the weight. 800 fill is on the higher end of the spectrum so this jacket will feel very light. It a good option for winter sports, as it requires the body heat generated from the wearer to create thousands of tiny air pockets which trap warm air and retain heat. This jacket is probably best for fall, early winter or spring weather, but it can be layered both over or under for added warmth. Hope this helps!

What about laundering? The similar jacket with primaoft was washable in reviews from a guy on the PCT. Thanks!

Asked by: Dana
Hey there, Thanks for reaching out to us! To clean your Patagonia Down Sweater, machine wash it in a front loader washing machine using warm water and a delicate detergent like Woolite. Rinse twice. Tumble dry on low heat with a couple of clean tennis balls.

Is this jacket warm enough for a wisconsin winter?

Asked by: lisa
Thanks for the question! The Down Sweater does have 800-fill down - so it will be extremely warm. However, it is not Wind or Waterproof -so you will get soaked very easily. I would suggest wearing a waterproof shell over it. Hope this helps!
