The Patagonia Men's Alpine Houdini Jacket is an ultralight rain jacket for alpine climbing adventures. The nylon ripstop shell is durable and has a durable water repellent to stop the water from soaking your other layers. The regular fit allows the Alpine Houdini to comfortable go over layers while still allowing movement. The hood is helmet compatible and has a single-pull adjustment. You will also find a single pull adjustment at the waist as well as elastic at the cuffs to block out drafts. The left chest pocket allows you to stuff the jacket into itself and using the carabiner loop attach it to your harness. At seven ounces, you'll barely notice the weight but appreciate the protection it provides in an unexpected rainstorm.

DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultralight with heavy protection This jacket is a minimalist rain-coat, no doubt about it. My favorite part about this coat is the weight. At around 6 oz, you can't beat it. I am an ultralight backpacker, and used this coat during my A.T. thru-hike. I barely noticed it in my pack, yet when I needed protection from the elements in a torrential downpour or on a windy ridgeline I knew that I had some serious shell power available. As far as breathability goes, it is no miracle product. It is much more comfortable than a cheap nylon coat, so it doesn't feel that much like a plastic bag when you're wearing it, but I am a certified sweat hog so I can easily overheat it while pumping up to a summit. I believe that this jacket is marketed towards climbers, but I wouldn't want to do too much climbing in it. The fabric is amazingly durable for how thin and light it is, but I doubt it would last very long being scraped on rock. For my purposes though, it is perfect. I'd try to get it on sale, because I think full price Patagonia anything is a little steep, but it is definitely a quality piece that is the best in its class.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great packable rain jacket I bring this thing along for cold/questionable weather climbs. It's about 6oz, I just clip it to my haul loop and forget about it. I'll throw it on at belays to cut the wind and stay warm, or obviously when it rains. It weighs a couple of ounces more and is a little bulkier than a regular Houdini but I think it's worth it in this application for the added durability and waterproofness. It's a really nice layer to add to your system (on top of something like an R1 or cap4 hoodie) and weighs nothing.

What is the interior like? Is it nylon also? Would it be comfortable with just a t-shirt underneath?

Asked by: kylerr
The Patagonia Men's Alpine Houdini Jacket offers lightweight, emergency storm protection for light-and-fast alpine endeavors. The Alpine Houdini Jacket is an unlined nylon shell. I imagine that it would be comfortable enough for wear over a t shirt. This ultralight shell disappears when clipped to your harness, then deploys to shed wind and precip when your weather window closes.
